    1. [LAOIS] Name Index Laois RC Parish Records - new

    3. Last week I began working on a new index for my website, an index to the names of people listed in the various parish registers I have transcribed to date, some of which are on-line and some of which are not yet. I began by taking all the names from each file, when I had 13000 entries for my name index I stopped even though I still had other transcriptions I had not yet included. I figured that with 13000 entries I was going to be at this new index for a while before I got it right. So, what I am bringing on-line is just a beginning and a fraction of what I actually have. I went through the file I had created and removed all very questionable names, then if I had two or more of the same name for any year for the same register, I deleted all but one of those names. I have left in all variations of a first name or a surname, soo for example when there was a Jno Phelan listed for one parish inn 1843 and a John Phelan listed for that same parish in 1843, I included both the Jno and the John even though this is the same name. If, there was a Jno Philan or a John Phelon listed for that parish I also included these variations on the surname and first name. By the time I had worked my way or almost worked my through to the M surnames, I asked people on a list to take a look at what I had put on-line and advise as to what they thought of it. I was advised that to include the event, and how many times the name occurred in a register would be a help. So, I began going back through the registers (so far only two) and include this information. So, from the P surnames forward there are notes as to whether the person was a child, parent, sponsor/witness and how many times this name occurs in this register for that year. Once I finish creating the initial pages, then I will begin to go through those registers I did not include in this index adding them and the index will gradually appear as a whole. As I go through the various transriptions it is my intention to bring more records on-line. If you are interested in checking out my new index to see for example how common or uncommon your ancestors name was, then you can find it at http://www.laoisgenealogy.com I know that all the pages I have on-line so far are linked from that page, but for some of the pages you will not yet find a link to all of the other pages. I was actually very surprised to see how few O surnames there were in what I have put together so far - maybe they were all hiding in another parish and I'll come across them yet! Jane
