The military record just has "died" with nothing else, several others are the same. It is quite possible that they were dying of disease, I would like to have a look in the regimental records in Durham to see if there anything there. I just don't think that he would have originally been RC because the area where he came from and suspect the marriage and baptisms were RC because of his wife's religion but it did not last in the family.
