Wonder if he could be related - maybe too hopeful to think could be a brother I suppose! He married an Eliza Grady in 1880 (she was born about 1860) and had 2 daughters born 1883. His daughter Ellen (Nellie) emigrated to Australia in 1910ish. Thanks for any help possible... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Yes, you are right. My Laois family are in the Killeshin parish of Carlow. They are on the border. Hopefully they are working their way through Ireland. Geraldine As far as I can see, there are no Laois records on the Irish Genealogy site. John ------------------------------ Hi John, Before you hire a researcher try the www.irishgenealogy.ie web site. As far as I know most of the Church of Ireland records are on this site. It was the RCB Millenium project to scan all the records. Even though I have been up to the RCB I have found a few more of mine on here. Hope you are lucky. Geraldine
Hi John, Before you hire a researcher try the www.irishgenealogy.ie web site. As far as I know most of the Church of Ireland records are on this site. It was the RCB Millenium project to scan all the records. Even though I have been up to the RCB I have found a few more of mine on here. Hope you are lucky. I will almost certainly have to engage a researcher to check c1820-40 parish registers at the RCB Library and I would like to know whether someone on the list has had a positive experience with a researcher, knowledgeable in the records of Laios. Thanks John
I have just added to the County Leix section of my website the tithe index for the Ballyroan Civil Parish. This is a huge parish. Don't forget to read my transcription notes to see what problems I encountered with this transcription. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

Author: glaspaircs Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2801.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Have you researched all the records for Michael Meagles, eg. all his US census records, civil and church marriage and death records, tombstone, will, obituary, US naturalisation records, etc. and all say the surname is Meagles? That's not a surname that exists in Ireland, it looks more like a garbled version of the surname probably from his first census record in the US when the enumerator couldn't understand his Irish accent? But aside from the surname you need to research all his civil and church records in the US to find out where in Queens County his was born and his parents name as well as his date of birth and religious denomination. There are no civil birth records in Ireland before 1864 and no surviving census records before 1901. Church records for his birth location in Laois (Queens County) would be the possible source for a baptismal record but not all the church records survive for all years or for all religious denominations. There's a list of the names of all the towns and townlands in Laois (Queens County) at the Ireland Townland Database http://www.seanruad.com and select Queens County as your search county from the drop down menu. Yes, Nick Halpin, sometimes Old Nick, is the fellow. His son and grandsons were very well educated, becoming newspaper editors. writers, amateur botanists, geologists and a C of I minister. Pity about Lea church being COI, but thanks for the info re Killenard. Actually, I think that Peter Kennedy, died Jan 1889, and his wife Mary Anne (nee Connor) died 14 May 1906 are buried there, so there's a good chance that his father Michael Kennedy (and Michael's wife, whoever she is) are also there, but have never been able to confirm it as I can't find out where the burial records are stored. I know that they DON'T have headstones, which doesn't help. Yes, I used to be in quite regular contact with Fr. Michael Noonan of St. Michaels (think he's retired now) who was always extremely helpful, but we could never find the baptism of "my" Peter Kennedy, born c. 1825-1830. Peter K was a fishmonger, and I always wondered where he would have fished - maybe the canal? or River Barrow? Seems a strange job for a man who lived so far from the coast, but that's what it says on all his children's Civil birth certs. Anyway thanks again for the info/help. I presume you have seen the maps that accompany the Griffiths and seen where Michael lived..near the old canal which is no longer there which passed through Lea.We`re about half a mile from there. Have you visited St. Michaels or been in contact with the parish office to see if they could help?I don`t know too much about St. Michaels as its not my local church.
