If you have either of her parents names, you could confirm if this is "your" Bridget before you buy. (I have relatives born Portarlington c. 1850/1860's, and some of their births were registered in Kings, even tho' Portarlington is in Queens!). Good luck! 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: DaveBoylan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2805.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Jim, I'm not a descendant of the Delaneys and Haslams, but I located the marriage index for Michael Delaney and Ellen "Haslem" at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Laois. The homepage for the IFHF can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/ The index shows that Michael and Ellen were married in the Mountrath Catholic Church in the year 1858, which is the year you have for their marriage. The index follows: 1 match for the search criteria: Delaney (plus variants) Michael 1858 Parish: MOUNTRATH (RC) The cost to view the full details of the 1 record that you have not yet viewed is ?5.00 Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Laois Surname: Delaney First Name: Michael Spouse's Surname: Halsam Spouse's First Name: Ellen Father's Surname: Father's First Name: Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Year: 1858 Parish/District: MOUNTRATH (RC) ____ If you haven't used this website before you'll have to first register to access the indexes. Registration is free. Once you find an index you can purchase a transcription for 5 Euros each, payable by credit card. Once the credit card payment is received, a transcription, not a copy of the original record, will be sent to your computer. You'll also be able to purchase a group of birth and baptism transcriptions from the IFHF for a reduced cost when they are purchased altogether from a single index. I'll have more information about this later. In the marriage index above for Michael and Ellen, you'll notice spaces for the names of Michael's parents. If you don't know the names of the parents, you have to guess or leave the spaces blank, as I did. The transcription of the marriage may, or may not include the names of Michael's and Ellen's parents. You would have to order the transcription to find out. I also uncovered the baptism indexes for three children of the Delaneys. In one of these indexes however, Ellen's first name is Eleanor. I had to guess at that name to up come with the index. This is for the 1860 baptism index for Patrick. The other two baptism indexes are for "Winfred" (1859), and "Cath" (1863). All of the children were baptized in the Borris-In-Ossory Catholic Church. I also located the civil birth index for Edward Delaney. His birth was recorded in the Borris-In-Ossory (CP), that is, Civil Parish, in 1865 The four indexes for the Delaney children follow: 1 match for the search criteria: Delaney (plus variants) Winfred 1859 Parish: BORRIS IN OSSORY (RC) The cost to view the full details of the 1 record that you have not yet viewed is ?5.00 Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Laois Surname: Delaney First Name: Winfred Father's Surname: Delaney Father's First Name: Michael Mother's Surname: Halsam Mother's First Name: Ellen Year: 1859 Parish/District: BORRIS-IN-OSSORY (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Delaney (plus variants) Patrick 1860 Parish: BORRIS IN OSSORY (RC) The cost to view the full details of the 1 record that you have not yet viewed is ?5.00 Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Laois Surname: Delaney First Name: Patrick Father's Surname: Delaney Father's First Name: Michael Mother's Surname: Halsam Mother's First Name: Eleanor Year: 1860 Parish/District: BORRIS-IN-OSSORY (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Delaney (plus variants) Cath 1863 Parish: BORRIS IN OSSORY (RC) The cost to view the full details of the 1 record that you have not yet viewed is ?5.00 Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Laois Surname: Delaney First Name: Cath Father's Surname: Delaney Father's First Name: Michael Mother's Surname: Haslam Mother's First Name: Ellen Year: 1863 Parish/District: BORRIS-IN-OSSORY (RC) ____ 1 match for the search criteria: Delaney (plus variants) Edward 1865 Parish: BORRIS-IN-OSSORY (CP) The cost to view the full details of the 1 record that you have not yet viewed is ?5.00 Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Laois Surname: Delaney First Name: Edward Father's Surname: Delaney Father's First Name: Michael Mother's Surname: Halsam Mother's First Name: Ellen Year: 1865 Parish/District: BORRIS-IN-OSSORY (CP) ____ If the four transcriptions were ordered individually, you would pay 20 Euros. But, you can order all four of the transcriptions from one index for 12 Euros. To do this however, you will need to access the index just as you see it below, without the first names and dates of birth for the children, without their mother's first name (as it is not the same in all the indexes), and without the name of the Parish ir District. The index is below: 4 matches for the search criteria: Delaney (plus variants) The cost to view the full details of the 4 records that you have not yet viewed is ?12.00 Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Laois Surname: Delaney First Name: Father's Surname: Delaney Father's First Name: Michael Mother's Surname: Halsam Mother's First Name: Year: Parish/District: ____ Next, I found a baptism index for an Ellen Haslam recorded in 1840. This is the only index for an Ellen Haslam I could find who would have been old enough to marry in 1858. But, just from this record alone, I can't be 100 percent sure this is your Ellen Haslem As an example, four abbreviated baptism indexes for Ellen Haslams/Haslems are below. Two of these Ellens were baptized in the 1860s, while one was baptized in 1870, and one, as noted above, baptized in 1840. This search included all of the years of the 19th century: Church Baptism Haslem Ellen 1840 Co. Laois Church Baptism Haislem Ellen 1866 Co. Laois Civil Birth Haslam Ellen 1866 Co. Laois Civil Birth Haslam Ellen Mary 1870 Co. Laois ____ Next is the expanded 1840 baptism index for Ellen Haslam, showing that her baptism took place in the Portlaoise Catholic Church. Portlaoise was also known as Maryborough. I made several guesses as to her father's first name. The IFHF search engine accepted the name John for her father's name: 1 match for the search criteria: Haslam (plus variants) Ellen 1840 Parish: PORTLAOISE (RC) The cost to view the full details of the 1 record that you have not yet viewed is ?5.00 Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Laois Surname: Haslam First Name: Ellen Father's Surname: Haslam Father's First Name: John Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Year: 1840 Parish/District: PORTLAOISE (RC) ____ I again accessed the marriage index for Michael Delaney and Ellen Haslem, using Ellen as the primary marriage partner, that is, the first one listed in the search engine, to see if the marriage record accepted her father's name as John. The search engine rejected the name. This is an indication that the parents of Michael and Ellen aren't mentioned in the marriage, though I recently purchased a marriage transcription from the IFHF where only the parents' last names were given, which was no help at all. Again, the marriage transcription will show you if the parents of Michael and Ellen are listed. I also searched for a baptism index for Michael Delaney for the 1825-1845 time period in Laois. The search turned up 64 possibilities, too many to venture a guess as to which is your Michael Delaney. GRIFFITHS VALUATION The index above for Ellen Haslem shows her baptism took place in Porlaoise, which, as also noted, was called Maryborough. I next wanted to see if there was a man named John Haslam/Haslem recorded in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation, in Portlaoise or Maryborough. Griffiths Valuation shows a John Haslem/Haslem enumerated twice in the townland Maryborough, Civil Parish of Borris, County Laois. I believe the two references to a John Haslam actually refer to the same individual. The Valuation can be accessed for free at the askaboutireland website link at: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/laoisrc.htm There's the possibility that the John Haslam in Griffiths Valuation was Ellen's father, though I can't be completely sure of that.. Griffiths Valuation differs from a census in that this land record only counted those persons leasing property who were called "Occupiers," as well as people who leased property to the occupiers, called "Immediate Lessors." An Immediate Lessor could be the owner of the property, or an individual who acted on behalf of the owner. The family members of the Occupier are not listed in Griffiths Valuation. The first entry for John Haslam in Griffiths Valuation is below: No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 34 Civil Parish: Borris Townland: Maryborough Occupier: John Haslam Immediate Lessor: Edward Walsh Description of Tenement: Land Area of Land: 1 Acres: 3 Roods: 0 Perches: Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 1 Pound, 15 Shillings Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 1 Pound, 15 Shillings ____ Griffiths Valuation shows that John Haslam had leased a little over an acre of land in Martborough from an Immediate Lessor named Edward Walsh. The value of the land was 1 Pound and 15 Shillings, which is also the total valuation of the property. John Haslam would have paid a percentage of the 1 Pound and 15 Shillings toward the payment of taxes. At the top of the Griffiths entry is Map No. 34. This refers to an Ordnance Survey Map coordinate showing Maryborough and the location of John Haslam's leasehold. You'll notice that the Griffiths entry above doesn't include the lease of house. This is an indication that any other entry for a John Haslam in Maryborough, would pertain to the same individual. On the same page as John Haslam, at Map No. 16, is a Griffiths Valuation entry for a Thomas Haslam, who owned over 7 acres of land valued at 4 Pounds, 5 Shillings. The Immediate Lessor is listed as "Free," meaning that no Immediate Lessor had control of the property, and that Thomas was, in effect, squatting in the house. Also on the same page, at Map No. 42d is a Thomas Delany, and at Map No. 46, a Patrick Delaney. Both Delanys had leased land in Maryborough. Either one of these Delaneys may have been related to Michael Delany. The next entry for John "Haslem" in Griffiths Valuation shows that he leased a house in Minister's Lane, Maryborough, from an Immediate Lessor named Edward Cullen. The house was valued at 16 Shillings. The location of the house on the Ordnance Survey Map for Minister's Lane is number 3. The entry follows: No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 3 Civil Parish: Borris Townland: Maryborough Street: Minister's Lane Occupier: John Haslem Immediate Lessor: Edward Cullen Description of Tenement: House Area of Land: Acres: Roods: Perches: Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 16 Shillings ____ MORE DELANYS IN GRIFFITHS VALUATION Earlier it was shown that a Thomas and a Patrick Delany had leased property in Maryborough. Including these individuals, there are a total of 20 Delanys listed in Griffiths Valuation leasing property in Maryborough. One of these is a Michael Delaney, who leased a house, outbuildings and garden from an Immediate Lessor named Thomas Parnell at Map No. 27f. You'll see all the Delanys as well as the two Halems/Haslams in Maryborough, in Griffiths Valuation, by accessing the askaboutireland website link noted earlier. For more information about Griffiths Valuation, go to the following: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/history-heritage/irish-genealogy/what-is-griffiths-valuati/ I hope this information has been helpful. Author: cgpigott Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/401.4.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I visited the 18th century "mansion" at Capard in 1983. The then owner informed me that a PIGOT family had recently leased one of the old gate houses, and were still living there. He did not know whether or how they might have been related to the original occupants. They were not home when I passed by on my way back to Dublin. I suspect this may be the family with the headstones in Rosenallis R.C. cemetery. The Capard PIGOTTs were of descent from Sir Robert PIGOTT of Dysart by his 2nd wife, Thomasine CASTILLION alias PEYTON. They held the estate until the late 19th century, when the last heir could only muster a family which were evidently illegitimate, said to have been his children by a former domestic servant at Capard House; it appears that a judicious Swiss relative intervened, and after the heir & his consort had died in Dublin, possibly under "suspicious" circumstances (at least one may have been a suicide), appears to have disbursed the unlawful brood among different relations, & claimed ownership of the estate by right of his wife (the late heir's sister). Author: cgpigott Surnames: PIGOTT, WELDON, BURGOYNE, SYDNEY Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/401.4.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thomas PIGOTT of Dysart took possession of Dysart after the Restoration, and about the time of his marriage, in 1663, to Elizabeth WELDON. He died in 1702, & was succeeded by his eldest son Robert PIGOTT, who died in 1730, having married (Judith BURGOYNE, in Essex, 1701), but without issue. Robert's will, dated 1728, is also abstracted in Vere OLIVER's "History of Antigua," this abstract now to be regarded as a "primary record" in the absence of the original (destroyed by fire in 1921-22). But Robert had already sold the Dysart estates, due to family "difficulties" (not least the fact that he despised his profligate & spend-thrift nephew Thomas, his heir-apparent), in 1726, to his own 2nd cousin, Emanuel PIGOTT of Chetwynd, Co Cork. The Major PIGOTT you mention was John PIGOTT, eldest son & heir of Sir Robert; he was killed at the Sack & Storm of Dysart "Castle" on 6 Oct 1646, along with his 19-year old youngest son William, & about 40 others - the event was witnessed by his wife Martha, their 3 daughters, and two un-named grandchildren, one of whom was most likely to have been the 5 year-old heir apparent, Thomas PIGOTT (who died in 1702). His zealous activity as a Magistrate in later life might just have been activated by flash-backs to his own child-hood memories. The original John PIGOTT appears to have been part of the influx of English Army personnel raised in England & brought over to Ireland in 1558; however, his first appearance in Military Accounts lists of Sir Henry SYDNEY was not until 1560; his first mention in State Papers was his appointment to a Commission, 1561, to mark the bounds of Queen's County & appoint a place for the gaol; & the first mention of his property grant, named Dysart, was in 1562. I offer the following suggestions: I think Dorcas COSBY alias SYDNEY's 2nd husband was named ZOUCHE. John BARNES did marry Johanna PIGOTT (possibly alias HOVENDEN) alias WALSH, sometime before 1578, when they are both named as guardians in the Fiant of Queen Elizabeth by which the younger son, Robert PIGOTT, was declared the new heir-apparent to the Dysart Estates, after the death of his elder brother Thomas (date details for these events are recorded in an Exchequer Inquisition held in Maryborough in 1578, & formerly preserved, in Latin, in the Public Records Office, Four Courts, Dublin, a copy of which was made in the 1880's, well before it was destroyed by fire, by the Deputy Keeper of Public Records, and published in Vere Langford OLIVER's "History of Antigua," Vol 3, pp.25-29). Family lore suggests that Ann ST LEGER was instead the daughter of William ST LEGER (the eldest but disinherited son of Sir Anthony ST LEGER, Lord Deputy of Ireland) by his wife Isabel KEYES, and therefore the sister of Sir Warham ST LEGER the younger (which doesn't preclude their also being a brother William, but I find no records for one); Ann died in 1599 (her Funeral Entry is recorded in the Genealogical Office, Dublin). Elizabeth PIGOTT had her first child by Richard COSBY in 1608 (shortly after Dorcas ZOUCHE alias COSBY alias SYDNEY's death - which adds weight to the theory that their marriage did not meet with her approval). But Robert PIGOTT's 2nd wife, Thomasin CASTILLION alias PEYTON, was not free to marry PIGOTT until after her 1st husband's death, and we know the he was still alive on 5 Oct 1600 (from the date on his despatch from the Moyry Pass, describing Lord MOUNTOY's skirmishing around the Army of the Earl of Tyrone). Which leads me to the inevitable conclusion that Elizabeth must have been the daughter of Ann ST LEGER; and therefore identical to Sibilla, who marr Barnaby DUNN - indeed, Sibilla DUNN alias PIGOTT's Funeral Entry (Genealogical Office, Dublin) does record her with two sets of escutcheons, the impaled Arms of COSBY=PIGOTT and DUNN=PIGOTT, which provides corroboration. Research indicates that Thomasine's father, Queen Elizabeth's Auditor in Ireland, was Christopher PEYTON, who died in Dublin in 1612. Further, it seems likely that Robert PIGOTT's 1609 knighthood was granted for his efforts in supporting a Mr CROSBIE's removal of large numbers of native Irish, including the "pesky" O'MORE clan, out of the Queen's County, & resettling them in other parts of the kingdom, as recorded in Lord Deputy CHICHESTER's letter. I have posted details of Sir Robert PIGOTT's life on my blog page, at www.pigott-gorrie.blogspot.com in the very first posting in May 2007. Regards, Chris PIGOTT, Potts Point, N.S.W. There maybe books that would answer this sort of question. Most of the research here is just birth, marriages and deaths, simple genealogy. 98% of the Irish were farmers in the 1800's. www.askaboutireland.ie has the Griffith Valuations used as a census substitute for the 1850's. You can see the head of household as occupier and a tenant of, what the description is of the land: house, outbuildings-offices, acreage is any expressed as acres, roods and perches. You can see who the neighbours are and possibly the families they married into. Directories are on www.failteromhat.com for 1824 & 1846 I have later ones if necessary. They also have a simpler version of Griffith Valuations. You maybe able to find people in the www.landedestates.ie as most of the land was in the names of the English aristocracy. Where you find records can depend on religion as to where found or stored. www.nationalarchives.ie for 1901/1911 Census www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom Ireland County www.igp-web.com County there are other websites not permitted on the message board as they are 'fee paying' including that of bmd's for Laois/Queen's County. There is one Ross in the whitepages for Laoix and 55 Kennedy's. So one letter to the Ross listed, and use a good map to find others in the areas you know the family lived. What other countries have you tried, US, CA, UK or Auz? I tried CA and USA and UK 1910/1911 Census nothing.Try the Auz passenger records as it makes sense she would go there possibily before sister Henrietta!!
