In the Gaelic, Fennelly roughly translates to 'of the fair foreigners'. Ireland was occupied by the Vikings so makes sense. My ggrandmother was Mary Loughman from Ballybrophy. She came to US in abt 1888 and married William Wallace Templeton in 1892 in New Rochelle, NY. According to records her younger brother John came to US in 1896 from Killadooley. It also looks like her mother Catherine 1842-1923 came to stay with them in US. Also I know that her brother Steve Loughman was in NY with them as well. Best, John Templeton Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I only know that the Cassins married in to to the Fitzpatrick family and where they were from; very little detail on their Irish heritage. If you send me your email I will forward pages from our family tree with more exact dates. They ended up in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, US, a very rural and wild part of the US at the time. Mostly native American Indians; very isolated. Many people came to Wisconsin to work in the forests (lumber and saw mills were everywhere or the beaver and fur industry. Fur trapping was everywhere along the many rivers; especially Green Bay area in the mid-1850s. There was a "John Casson" from Viroqua, Vernon County, Wisconsin in the Civil War (1862) but not sure if it is the same family as this county is a distance from Waupaca County. I can place my ancestors around Clonehurk in the 1830s and later at Ringstown. >From my experience, I pay no heed to the variations in the name, you're almost always relying on the discretion and interpretation of the priest, so I'd include them all in searches. You might study the number of families in different areas recorded under various spellings around 1850 here - http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&Surname=McCormack&UserID= - you see very few use Cormack, and even fewer use Cormac (even though it's probably more authentic Gaelic, if you like). You may have a harder time researching Delaney & Phelan, just because they seem to be very common surnames in Laois. Author: AnnetteCode Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2803.2.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I don't think it is because they didn't care if they spelled their names right. It usually depended on whether or not they could write. I probably have said so already but have read memorial inscriptions on gravestones that have three different spellings of the same family. Since it say erected to the memory of and references to children and parents you can tell its one family. Perhaps another reason would be the stone carver may not have been literate either. In my husband's family the name went from Codd to Code in Canada. The indigenous irish were treated as third class citizens at best - similer to the black slaves of America. Good history books give accurate accounts of the times as even movies don't cut it. I have a 1830 list of tenants from the Fitzwilliam Estate in Wicklow of 1500 names and it comes with many X for names. They were not allowed to vote, put children in schools etc. That is where the name hedge schools came from. FW was a different landlord and not only built schools for both religions he built separate churches. In the Lewis Topograpical Dictionary of 1837, the Establish church was Protestant - which is quite bizarre. I belong to an Irish History Society that is lobbying the goverment for free access to records. They don't like that the County governments took the grants from the government to establish these genealogy offices and turned it into a money making program. The original intent was to develop roots tourism which really only meant free for those who went to Ireland which would still be impossible for some. The Auditor General did a report on the subject and suggested the materials be given to local libraries with no fee to research. This group are also lobbying for early release of the 1921 census, but most people are searching from overseas for much earlier emigrants. Lets just hope Ancestry don't buy them all out and the only way you can get them is a year subscription for $300 . They would be that accessible either. They have recently acquired the Tithe records (not in their entirety)from the National Archives. Cheaper than a flight to Ireland but also impossible for some. If you are interested in the above society's take on things I can scan and email the front page article. Annette Code Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. And there's suppose to be a different in the historical backgrounds / time-lines of the of the two separate groups...And its been told or "passed around" that people just didn't care about the way they spelled their names or other peoples names..."What do we really have now...?" What type of "his-story" at best. I've accepted the Immigration "story" of the Local Native "writers trying to understand the in-coming immigrants speech etc..." But am having a "tougher time accepting the "lack of concern of the Irish way of doing things as "simple as getting their last names spelled correctly...especially when "the Irish" are trying to straigthen out their own past of regressions with their history and short comings. Over-charging and having unreasonable web-sites that are designe! d to "my more money because of the "maze" that is man-made by their own hands..."
