My wife is of Irish descent and we have run into a "WALL." Imagine that- Most if not all of her relatives came in through New York but few records are available. We found burial records for five of the family members in New York but they lack any previous data more specifically parentage or, provide only general birth information such as country of birth= Ireland. We had a break through recently and discovered that a paternal mother, Mary B. McDowell born in or raised in Portloaise, Ireland about 1867 /- some number of years and died 1967. Surviving family members suggest the lady was 100 years old or older at the time of her demise. Hoping that the lady was Catholic and at the very least, I feel I should be able to locate Birth and or Baptismal records more accurately, both would be best. I plan on spending some time in Portloaise this coming November if someone out there has recommendations for me to follow up on Ms. McDowell. Any and all guidance is greatly appreciated. My gt grandfather, William DeLaney was born 28 May 1849, 1850 or 1851 (various sources indicate various years) in Mountrath. He was a coachman in the 1881 English census (Suffolk) and emigrated to Brisbane, Australia where he died. When he married, he listed his father as William DeLaney, deceased, also a coachman. I've been unable to make any headway on his birth records. I'm wondering if there's a connection here! Did Joseph not have any sons? that would give you a clue--if they followed the traditional naming pattern the eldest son should have been named for Joseph's father. And I should also have added that your best bet to find any further records would be parish registers. Do you know if the family was Catholic, Episcopal, Methodist, or? Then you would want to see if there are any surviving registers for the relevant religion for Dysartenos parish. If nothing there, I have no idea where to turn next--sorry! I know that Queens County is now Laios County. Joseph an Mary may have had other daughters. A tree for my Desonia``s was emailed to me a few weeks ago. This tree was compiled in 1966. In it was a hand written page with Joseph and Mary Haslem and their children, Julia, Bridget with their birthdates and Ann Haslam Davoy, Lizzie Haslam Taylor, Mira Haslam O`Brion and Alice Haslam Skelton. I did find Ann as Anna at family search, her death info, which has her birthdate as Feb 18 1834 in Ireland. I did find Mary Hennessey Haslam at Find A Grave.
