I have previously read articles like this one about the typical naming pattern. My greatgrandfather (born about 1832) also had a middle name and nearly always used both first and middle names on documents after coming to the USA from Ireland. Can anyone shed any light as to the significance of a middle name? Middle names were sometimes either the mother's maiden name or the father's first name. In my Irish family where there were lots of Johns who were cousins, their father's first name was commonly a middle name. So John William's father was Wm, John Thomas's middle name was Thomas, etc. My grandfather was named George, after his father as he was the third son; his middle name was that of a cousin of his mother's who was a near neighbour, so that didn't fit either of the above! ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Bergen" <bergeng@sbcglobal.net> To: "colette o rorke" <cmcororke@hotmail.com>; <irl-laois@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 30, 2011 9:38 AM Subject: Re: [LAOIS] IRISH TRADITIONAL NAMING PATTERN >I have previously read articles like this one about the typical naming >pattern. Also on the 1911 Irish census she lived close to Joseph he would have been her Brother and she lived in Dublin until her death. She had a second hand clothes shop in Kevin Street, Dublin. There is a photo of her on my tree as my Mum is her Grandaughter and she gave me the photo. It was great to see the other siblings as well on this post. There was also a Catherine Molloy who was a shop keeper she had her shop at The Coombe she was on Mary Molloy's birth cert as a godmother. I am not sure about this one. I note that your Haslam connection is R/C. I know that on the Island (PEI), the Haslam families really married pretty much within the Protestant church up until around 1920's. As I have been reading your postings for quite a while, the thought continually goes thru my mind, did someone cross the religious line in the late 1700's or was there a division in the family religion a 100 plus years earlier. I till think that we are all generally connected, we just haven't yet come across that "keystone" person. My ancestral ggggrandfather Thomas was born in 1783 which is a known fact. He came to PEI in 1818. I know he had a brother Benjamin, as he followed his brother to PEI in 1821. Another known fact is that they had a sister Margaret who stayed in Ireland and she married William Headen. I have a copy of a letter written by Matthew Headen, son of William and Margaret written in 1844 where he had attended the funeral of his paternal grandfather in Mountmellick and acted upon some land transfers on behalf of his Uncle Thomas. His letter was written upon his return to Dublin. At the present, I am not finding any other siblings to my Thomas, other than the two mentioned above, yet I believe that there had to be more than just a brother and sister. In corresponding with others on this site, there is a lot of common use of names in the generation you go back to. I am hoping someone who may have a family member who married a Haslam/Haslem in the time frame of 1800, more or less, stumbles across our search. I find it hard to believe that several of us searching the Haslam name are not inter-connected. The name "Joesph" is an example in my famlly line. Thomas's second son was named Joseph. Thomas's first son named his first son Joseph as well. (that would be my ggrandfather) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. When you said Kendallville it sounded so familiar. It seems like I read something about my Philip Haslam (John Haslam's son) living in Kendallville. I remember when I read the article about Philip thinking that it was similar to Kendaville Road, a road near Howard City, Michigan. I've spent the last two months trying to find that info, unfortunately, with no success. I even tried asking other relatives. But the plot does thicken, though. Kendallville is in Noble County and my Haslem's lived there for some time. Ann O'Connor Haslam lived there after they left NY until she died and Philip Haslam lived there before moving to Michigan. I'm hoping to find some kind of information (birth or death certificates, property records) that will mention Kendallville. I'll keep in touch.
