    2. Born 1826 or 28 in Ballinakill, County Laois. Son of John Dooley and Mary Feen. Sisters and brothers: John b 1824, James b 1829, Mary b 1831, Catherine b 1833. Michael came to USA in 1849, supposedly departed from Cork, port of arrival is unknown, and settled in Illinois. Where do I go from here? Needed are departure date/port, arrival date/port. And a bunch of other things, but this will do for now. I have information that descendants of his siblings may still live in County Laois but have been unable to contact them, or receive a response. Are there any Dooleys out there with a Ballinakill connection who can help solve the mystery? Thanks

    3. Hi, I am trying to find any information on Joseph LEECH b. c 1820 who married Catharine FITZGERALD b. c. 1820. I understand they were married on 8 Sep 1845 in "Clonenagh,0006,Laoighis, Ireland" Further paperwork indicates Joseph was Episcopalian and Catharine was Roman Catholic. They emigrated to GA in the USA in 1854 and Joseph died of Yellow Fever in the next year. Catharine moved to Charleston, SC with her children, Mary and Thomas Henry LEECH and the name became LEITCH. Can anyone direct as to how to find further information on this marriage or these families? Thanks for any assistance. Pat

You won't get the maps you are lookiing for anywhere out there on the web.....closest would be the regular current OS maps Discovery Series 1: 50,000 You'd need No. 60 to show where you're at here.... They're OK those maps are......no townlands marked but you get an idea of the layout of where everywhere is - I'm not too sure that the land office copy the Griffiths maps any more - those maps show changes of ownership from one person to another and changes in land - if it was divided up again or not and as far as I know they cost a packet just for ewach one...... But - then again - that's only hearsay. I know the land record office have begun charging somethiong like £12 for each search - and I heard that they don't copy some maps any more. 3. I've got a lot of Laois records and no mention of the surname Grattan in them at all other than as a street in Mountrath. when I checked the name in an old telephone directory - the name only turns up as Grattan stores in Portlaois town - so I guess there's a Grattan street there as well........... From that - if I was looking for people of the surname - I'd begin with the Tithes for those two areas - Mountrath is only a few miles away from, P'Laois........... 2. Jane Lyons
    3. there are a lot of pre 1831 parish records still extant for each and every county in the country. however, you aren't going to find them on line and Laois is covered by about 4 Dioceses. You need to check out the areas in the county that you find the surname Hayes in and from there begin to check out what records are remaining for parishes in that area. one way of doing this is to find sks who will check the Griffiths valuation for you and tell you which civil parishes the surname was found in Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dorne Saunders" <dornes@ozemail.com.au> To: <IRL-LAOIS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 19 June 2000 15:46 Subject: RECORDS INTAKE? > Would SKS please advise as to whether or not Parish records from around > C1831 are still intake or were they in fact burnt in fire as I have been led > to believe? > I am trying to trace an Ancestor ELIZABETH HAYES born QUEENS COUNTY about > 1831, and her twin sister MARY HAYES. 3. I have just received the microfilms for the Aghaboe and Abbeyleix parish areas. Can anyone help me understand the columns? In particular, what do the letters A, R, P mean? I know that one of these columns indicates how many acres were being farmed and how many were being rented, but I can't figure which is which. What exactly was an "office"? was it a word for home? Also, I am searching for the Bolger family. I find only 5 or six entries and a couple of them have the same name. For example, Joseph Bolger was renting land, office, and building in one area and then he shows up renting just land somewhere else nearby. I had read where the surveyor would write down Joseph(James) to distinguish between father and son and others with the same name-but that is not the case here. Does anyone out there have digital images (Rastor, vector, or arcview) or even hard copies of the ordnance survey maps for this area, that I could purchase? I understand that the OSI (Ordnance Survey of Ireland) sells them, but I hear they never seem to answer their e-mails regarding pricing. Thanks, Irene

    1. Wills & Administrations
    2. Jane Lyons
    3. Wills and Deeds: Wills are important sources of genealogical information even at times for those whose ancestors did not write a will. Every will had witnesses and at times these witneses were simply yeomen or servants of the testator. For the person who is familiar with general surname distribution in Ireland the surnames of the witnesses and the counties in which the testator owned land can point to places where a witness as possibly from. Putting sets of wills made by people of the same surname together can possibly build up a picture of familial relationships, cousins, siblings, parents, uncles and aunts. Wills can tell such stories about the people who wrote them, the good deeds done by landlords, that not all were terrible people, the marital breakdown, the disinherited children, the attachment to servants. They can tell of the way of life of the people, the movement around the country, or, they can tell nothing more than just a few names. Not everything went up in smoke in the fire at the Four Courts in 1922, a lot did - but not everything There were two types of 'Court' dealing with wills and administrations. The Consistorial and the Prerogative Courts. The Consistorial court dealt with 'local' wills and deeds - that is those which referred to property/land within the boundary of that diocese only. Pre 1858: Wills & Administrations of the Consistorial Courts. Before 1857, the Church of Ireland as the Established Church was responsible for all testamentary affairs. Each Diocese had a Consistorial Court which was responsible for granting probate to a will. Probate is the legal authentification of a will and confers on the administrators the power to administer the estate. These courts also had the power to grant letters of Administration to the next of kin or the main creditor on the estates of those who died intestate (without making a will). Each Court was responsible for it's own Diocese, but if the person owned property valued at more than £5 in another diocese then the responsibility for the will or the administration passed on to the Prerogative Court. The Prerogative Court was under the responsibility of the Archbishop of Armagh. The Wills and Administrations of each Consistorial Court were held locally until the abolition of the testamentary authority of the church in 1857. After 1857 - the PRO began to collect these from the local courts and transcribe them into Will and grant Books, these were then indexed. All the original wills were destroyed in the fire of 1922 and most of the Will and Grant Books - the Will Books for the Dioceses of Down (1850-58) ; Connor (1818-20, 1853-58) survived. Also the Grant books for the Dioceses of Cashel (1840-45) ; Derry and Raphoe (1818-21) and Ossory (1848-58) survived. As did a very few original documents. The indices were not destroyed although some are badly damaged and difficult to read - pages have been repaired as best as possible. Wills are indexed alphabetically - information : the testator's address, year of probate and sometimes occupation - That is ALL the information which is to be obtained from these indices. Administration Bonds - indexed by year and under the initial letter of the person's surname. Information: full name, sometimes address and sometimes occupation. The Prerogative Court The Prerogative Court was the court which dealt with property spread over two or more Dioceses. Up to 1816 it was not held in a 'fixed' location - usually the house of the presiding Judge. From 1816 on - it was held in the King's Inn Building. Records pre 1816 can be thought of as being incomplete - it is not known if all were collected and sent to this one central place for indexing. Again, as for the records of the Consistorial Court, all original documents were transferred to the Public Records Office after 1857 and the original Wills and Grants of Administration were transcribed into Will and Grant books. These were then indexed. The originals and most of the indices were also destroyed in the fire of 1922. Post 1857 The probate Act of 1857 took away the testamentary authority of the Church of Ireland. Now - there was a Principal Registry in Dublin and eleven District Registries. The rules and administration remained something the same. The Principal Registry was the equivalent of the Prerogative Court (but it also covered Dublin and a large area around it). Again with these documents - transcripts were made of the originals. A 'Calendar of Wills and Administrations' was produced for each year, arranged alphabetically. In these 'Calendars' are found the name and address of the deceased person, where and when they died, the value of the estate, the place of Probate and the name and address of the person to whom probate was granted..the relationship of this person is also mentioned if they are related. Copies of these Calendars survive and while these date from 1858 forward it is possible to find records of those who died prior to 1858. There is a consolidated index to the period from 1858 -1877. These Calendars are to be found on the shelves in the National Archives in Dublin and the Public Records Office in Belfast. After the fire in 1922 the Public Records Office made an attempt to put together something of that which had been lost. To this effect, they requested copies of originals from anyone who would or could supply these, lawyers, families, researchers and so managed to save some of the past. There is a card index in the National Archives in Dublin - alphabetical listing material recovered. Separate card indices exist for those abstracts taken by researchers such as Thrift, Jennings, Crossley and miscellaneous donations and bequests since that time. .

    1. In Defence of the Irish............
    2. Jane Lyons
    3. There are con men out there - there are inexperienced people who will never give you results.......... there is good and bad as there is in every walk of life, in every culture, every society - every family even. There are some of us who will go through these newsgroups and help who we can, there are those of us who are seen to help and who are then bombarded by many people - each asking one little question - "It's only one little question - should only take a minute to answer" - but those many people - forget or do not realise that there are another 100 or 200 people who have one little question on the same day as they do. So - this is coming because I have again seen a post referring to Irish records.to how LDS libraries are not allowed film our records..........to that one Diocese which will not allow access to it's records......... and yes, to all of you the LDS libraries are so important......their films are so important........... and before I go one step farther - I am not a practising Catholic..and therefore I speak from an objective and not a subjective "in defence of my religion point of view." From what I understand - the Mormons have their libraries - their information - because they want to convert the ancestors of those who are members of their religion to that religion??? This means - to me.....that all my ancestors who died.....and went to whatever heaven they went to - beliving in whatever God they believed in.......they will be 'converted to Mormons'.or members of the Church of the Latter Day Saints after death - because I want to convert to their religion.or am a member of that faith. Maybe there is someone here who can correct me on this interpretation of the situation?? I hate to tell you boys and girls...women and men............but I think my ancestors would turn in their graves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I may not be a practising Catholic but whatever - that gives me no right to change the religion of my ancestors......... and even if I was a practising Catholic...........I think I wouldn;t have much respect for a religion which would allow conversion of it's members willy nilly...... what kind of religion would do that??? The Jewish faith certainly doesn;t................ Maybe for once...........the RC church has done the right thing.......... So - then............let's go from that point......... There are those who share their information for free - yes........... I'm one of those for the moment......newbies....please note.........check out who is who and what they do before you attack 'emotionally'on the basis of any post you see........... Please??............ But - there are alos those who 'work' at genealogy........... Now - how much do you pay for a plumber to come to your house? how much do you pay your Doctor when you go to se him with a problem............if he sends you to a specialist..what do you pay............if the specialist says - I can't find anything........ Do you pay him......or is it dependant in finding out that you have something seriuously wrong with you? if you need a lawyer - or a medical specialist - do you go to the first person who is recommended..........do you check people out............ If you are buying something as simple as a kettle...........a toaster.........do you just pick up the first one you see......... or check them out? Do not limit yourself to those researchers who only deal with a particular county......... Accept - that in Ireland our costs are high. Watch out that you aren't being conned............warn others......... But - please do not complain about films not being recorded.,....please understand and think about how your religion would deal with a situation in whcih you were going to be converted post death.......... Would you want to be a member of a faith who would allow this??? Seriously??
