    3. Hi Linda I think the messages got a bit mixed up but thanks for replying. I am looking for my Great Uncle John Brennan who served in the Royal Irish Rifles. He came from a village called Ballickmoyler in the County of Laois, Ireland. His Fathers name was Mark Brennan and his mothers name was Kate Brennan (nee Lalor). John Brennan was wounded twice in action in France. He was also a full time soldier in the regular army. As you can see I know very little about this man which is why I am using this medium to try and find someone who may have, as you suggested, kept newspaper cuttings of local papers in Carlow or Laois about local men in WW1. 1. Peter Conroy
    2. Looking for my greatgrandfather, Peter Conroy, who was born Nov. 27,1827 in Queens County, Ireland, now Laois County. I believe his father was named James. At age 17, Peter sailed to America and I next locate him in the 1850 US census residing in Greensburg, Pa., where he married Anna McCarty in 1856. They moved to Lee County, Iowa [Keokuk] and a son was born in 1858 named James, who only lived for 5 days. In a year another son was born named Peter Jr., and then Mary was born and then John William, my grandfather. Anna died around 1869 and Peter Sr. re-married to Sarah Crawford. At this time Peter and family were living on a farm at Clark County, Missouri [Kahoka]. This second marriage took place about 1877. Clark County, Missouri is west of Keokuk, Iowa across the Mississippi River and only 20 miles from Keokuk, Iowa. Subsequently daughter Mary married a methodist minister named Matthew Sexsmith. Son John married Anna Klamer. Peter, Sr. died Dec. 31, 1909 and is burried in Kahoka, Missouri. I would appreciate any information or help that anyone can give me. Incidentally, his first wife, Anna McCarty was from Belfast. Thank you Daryl Conroy conroyclaims@cs.com

    2. Irene Lee
    3. Joe, Don't stress the lack of a birth certificate. The Offaly Society found the people I inquired about (although no marriage cert. was located) and their 7 children. Problem was, they actually had 10 children. Civil registration was not mandatory back then, therefore some certificates are bound not to exist. I would say that the marriage certificate that they found is the one that you were looking for. I haven't seen that many Dooley and Dalys in Laois to make a coincidence possible (but you never know). If you know the date of birth try writing to Dublin for them. If they were registered, they would have the record. Assuming it didn't get lost in the big fire. Good Luck, Irene Lee -----Original Message----- From: Joseph W. Dooley [mailto:joex@erols.com] Sent: Sunday, August 20, 2000 6:52 PM To: IRL-LAOIS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Daly & Dooley Research Hello, I have lots of questions, and hope someone can give me some guidance here. I recently received a report from the Offaly Historical & Archaeological Society about a record in the marriage register in the parish of Mountrath, County Laois. This marriage record was dated May 1, 1839. The bride was Catherine DALY and the groom was John DOOLEY. This couple could be my ancestors, who migrated from Ireland to the United States, in about the year 1844. Unfortunately, the marriage register did not record either parent for the bride or the groom. No baptismal record for the bride can be found in the parish register of Mountrath, and no record of any children born to this couple can be found in Counties Offaly and Laois. Questions: Is anybody out there researching the Daly & Dooley families in Counties Offaly and Laois? If you are researching either of these families, does this marriage record connect with your research in any way? How would I go about trying the verify that this Catherine Daly and John Dooley are MY ancestors - as opposed to two people who happen to have the same name, and were married at about the right time? My Catherine Daly and John Dooley probably had two children before they migrated from Ireland. Is it significant that the Offaly Historical & Archaeological Society claims it cannot find a record of any children born to a Catherine Daly and John Dooley in Counties Offaly and Laois? How would I go about finding such birth records? Thanks a lot for any help. Take care, Joe Dooley Falls Church, Virginia U.S.A.

    1. Re: IRELAND to INDIA in 1914
    2. Jane Lyons
    3. That's a very long shot Michael. At best - she probably went to England and on from there. Your best bet is actually writing to the Loreto nuns themselves. Some of the few left may know all kinds of stories. There's no-one like a nun to know who is who and what is what and to have all the stories and any Loreto nun I ever knew was *fantastic* with stories :-) now - Loreto in Rathfarnham was the head house here in Ireland but as far as I know the living area has been closed and sold recently. At least - they auctioned off contents of the house - so I'd imagine so. Many of the nuns have now moved out into houses around the city as with other orders. That leaves you with the Loreto Convent in St. Stephen's Green. I figure that's probably the head house in the country now. I'd chance writing to the Mother Superior and asking her if she can help with the information or if she knows any nuns who can :-) Loreto Convernt, St. Stephens Green, Dublin 2. Only one still carries the surname and actually lives there, but we have made contact with all living cousins who currently live elsewhere. 3 Children from the James Bolger and Mary Mackey union remained in Ireland back in 1900 and their grandchildren and great grandchildren are alive and well and living all over the island. We will be over to visit next June. How did I find them? I took a chance and wrote to a person by the name of the great grandfather in the town where they last lived. He answered back and turned out to be a grandchild! If you are looking for relatives, try the telephone directory. You might luck out as I did. Good Luck! Irene Lee Anchorage, Alaska
