    1. Dempsey, Banans, Bannon, White, and more
    2. Carmela Kelly
    3. Looking for the town/parish where these families are from. Below is an excerpt from a letter dated October 1874, to Cousin James, naming them. "If your Mother is still living give her and Nancy my love. Remember me to all that is left of Martin Dempsey's family, John White's family, Edward Banans, and all my friends. Now to prove you are better natured than I have been write to me soon and tell me all the changes since I left Ireland. Direct to Michael Dempsey, Jena, Catahoula Parish, La. Believe me always your Most Affectionate Cousin, Michael Dempsey" Michael Dempsey, born 1822, Queen's County, to Michael Dempsey and Mary Moran. Siblings who emmigrated include Peter, James, Christopher, Cornelius Conner (b1812), and sister Mary. Their father remained in Ireland and died there, likely during the potato famine. Their father wrote to Michael in the U.S. seeking money/relief during the famine. Michael was unable to send it. Conner and Christopher settled in WI. Michael settled LA. James in NY, last seen in 1840 w/son Michael. Mary in Boston, married Dennis Kelly. She died in St. Louis. Her children were raised in a convent. Peter was last seen marrying in VA circa 1851.

    3. We are researching the Fennelly family who came to be known as Finley in the U.S. Our research centers around Doonane and nearby townlands in Laois and in nearby County Kilkenny. Our research centers around families who emigrated in years up to the early 1850s. We are researching the Neil family which came to be known as O'Neil in the U.S. Our Mary O'Neil married a Fennelly in Queen's County before they emigrated. Their Irish born children are registered in Doonane church records. She was from a neighboring parish. Joyce

    3. Castlecomer is not far from Laois. The the major road going from Castlecomer town toward Dublin goes right by Newtown. Newtown, Laois, is just a bit over the border from Kilkenny County where Castlecomer is located.

    3. Just wanted to let everyone know what has been added to the Laois (Queen's) Genealogy Website in April... *Dublin Diocesan Marriage Licenses 1732-1749 (Church of Ireland) These are some listings of Queens County people (usually the groom) who were married in Dublin. I am still going through this looking for more so some later ones will still be added in the next couple of weeks. *Also Jim Langton has kindly sent in some of Langton data as well as a file of more general interest. We do welcome additions so keep us in mind if you come across something of interest! You can access these records from the index at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~irllex/ Regards, Christina

    1. Doonane, Clonbrock AND Aughreena---Aughrina
    2. Roger at rocky@fastlink.com.au writes: << Can anyone advise precise location of Doonane & or Clonbrock in relation to Newtown & Castlecomer. >> Roger, I looked up all of this stuff (Mayo, too) a couple of days ago when your letter first appeared, but there seemed to be some confusion as to whether or not your mail was being delivered, etc. - so I just waited it out. Doonane is the next townland to the west of Newtown and abuts it. It extends from there right to the Kilkenny border to the west. It appears to contain 20 or 30 houses and a church. It's a large townland at about 2 1/2 square miles. Aghreena (not listed in the IreAtlas Townlands list, for some reason) is the next townland to the south of Newtown (and abuts it, too). It lies right along the east side of the N 78 highway. And the NEXT townland south of Aghreena is....ta da !!! .... Clonbrock. These two townlands appear to have about 20 houses between them, but I don't have boundaries to show the division. So, all of these townlands are within a couple of miles of Newtown. By the way, the Mayo you asked about in your last letter is shown at 613 767 on Discovery map 61 (all of these places are on that map), and is about 2 miles SSE of Newtown and 2 miles E of Crettyard. 1. BERGIN query
    2. Greetings from New Mexico, While I'm not entirely new to this listserve, I haven't posted to it in well over a year and would like to post the names I'm researching again in hopes of making a connection to someone else working on the same lines. Cornelius BERGIN was born about 1788 in Laois; he married Elizabeth STRINGER who was born c 1792. Their children, all born in Co Laois, include Patrick, b 11 Mar 1814; Daniel, b 1 Jan 1816; Mary, b 15 Aug 1818; Michael, b 24 May 1819; John, b c 1823; and Cornelius, b c 1825. The entire family emigrated to America prior to 1836. In America the children married: Patrick married Anna DIAMOND in Albany, NY, on 7 Aug 1836; Daniel married Catherine BROGHY; Mary married Joseph HINES; Michael married Jane DONAHOE; John married Mary LOGAN; and Cornelius is listed as insane on the US censuses and never married. Any help with these lines would be appreciated! Thanks, Daniel Powers "Toil in the Soil" has just been released from Millbrook Press! The townland has one rural road passing through it, on which are about 8 buildings (as of 1995). Not much else there but open fields - no schools or churches or supermarkets nearby (again, as of 1995. It may be a booming metropolis now, but I doubt it). 3. Looking for your Irish immigrant to US will not be on Ellis Island site if they came before 1892... Ellis Island did not exist until then. The Famine immigrants etc that came earlier than 1892 came in through Castle Garden..So don't waste time on the Ellis Island site . Watch the dates. Charlotte Smith

John Broderick, also known as SeanRuad, passed away last week. John was the one who created the IreAtlas website at http://www.seanruad.com/ and was such a great help to so many people in the soc.genealogy.ireland news group. The following quote is from http://www.seanruad.com: It is with deep regret that I must inform the research community that John Broderick (aka SeanRuad) passed away on April 7, 2001. With the passing of John, this site now becomes a memorial to the work that John dedicated himself to for the research community. A memorial guest page has been set up where you can sign in and leave your condolences for the Broderick family.
