    2. Michael Brennan
    3. Hi If anyone out there comes across in their research,or knows of, a John BRENNAN who served in France with The Royal Irish Rifles in the First World War, I would love to hear from you. This man has proved very hard to track down and I don't know where he went after the war, Assuming he survived, as he is not listed in any of the 1st WW death rolls. His father was Mark Brennan and his mother was Katie Lalor and he came from Co.Laois in Ireland The web site of my BRENNAN/MORAN Family History: http://www.brennanfamilyhistory.com> Regards Michael Brennan Kent England Home: michael@janbren.freeserve.co.uk

    1. FW: Shamrock Tombstone Transcription Project
    2. Paul E. Dowling
    3. -----Original Message----- From: Carol Hepburn [mailto:chepburn@qwest.net] Sent: Monday, July 16, 2001 4:29 PM To: IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Shamrock Tombstone Transcription Project Dear Listers, The Shamrock Tombstone Transcription Project is a new project that is being sponsored by The IrelandGenWeb Project (http://www.irelandgenweb.com). Below is information describing this project -- please feel free to visit the website (url below) and donate your tombstone information. This is a free project and your donation will help to make it a successful research tool for other irish researchers. Also, please feel free to pass this information on to any other email list you belong to -- if you feel that it is a worthwhile project. Thank you for your time! Best Wishes, Carol Hepburn IrelandGenWeb Coordinator http://www.irelandgenweb.com **************************************************************** The IrelandGenWeb Project is pleased to announce that the SHAMROCK Tombstone Transcription Project is now an official part of the IrelandGenWeb Project as a Special Project. Please see below for a description of the project. SHAMROCK Tombstone Transcription Project http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/tombstones IrelandGenWeb Project http://www.irelandgenweb.com <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Often the tombstones of persons born in Ireland will list their birthplace in Ireland on the stone. This can often provide the needed clue to continue a family history study in Ireland. SHAMROCK listmembers began contributing tombstone transcriptions which they have found in their own research, either of their own family members or just of tombstones they have come across while doing their research. Originally, these were transcribed to a webpage, but we quickly realized this project had the possibility of growing very large, and so in May of 2001 arrangements were made to transfer this project to a board where persons could enter their own data, and which would be searchable. This also will help guarantee that the data will always be available to researchers. You do not have to be a SHAMROCK listmember to contribute to this project! What is this transcription project for? ------------------------------------------------ This project is for tombstones -not- located in Ireland which indicate a place of origin in Ireland. These may be in your family, or may be just tombstones you have come across while searching a cemetery for your own ancestors. Have you come across a tombstone which shows a place of origin in Ireland, whether it is your family or not? If you have, please consider listing it in this project..... it just may provide a needed clue to someone else. What is not acceptable in this project? --------------------------------------------------- It is -not- acceptable to take information already published in a copyrighted book or article and place this on the transcription board. Please obey copyright laws! Any transcription found to violate copyright will be removed from the board. Only tombstones not located in Ireland should be included. **This project is not for transcribing tombstones from cemeteries within Ireland itself, or for asking for lookups or information on cemeteries or for general queries. Please do not submit tombstone data which do not meet this criteria. Inappropriate postings will be removed from the board without notice. To view or add to the transcriptions, visit http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/tombstones Maura Petzolt SHAMROCK Tombstone Transcription Project Carol Hepburn IrelandGenWeb Project Country Coordinator **************************************************************

    1. Success & demise of from-ireland.net web site
    2. Jane Lyons
    3. I sit here and debate to myself - will I or won't I.............to just let it die by itself seems much more dignified and yet, then I would have to deal with mail from some people who would wonder where it had gone to.........but, I could just switch off my computer and cancel my internet subscription. It seems the From Ireland web site is receiving too much traffic (over 1GB bandwidth per month), I have been asked to upgrade the package I have paid for or the server admin will have to 'cap' the site. I guess that means put a limit on the numbers who visit, I don't know. Three months was all it took - the number of discussions as to it's content, whether or not it was created using MSIE - they don't matter any more. The time it took - wasted. I give you the analysis of traffic to the From Ireland web site over yesterday, the last week and the last month............ at: http://www.from-ireland.net/statisticalanalysis.htm I always got into trouble if I said 'Americans' when I made a post to mail lists as to how I was generalising - I have found it interesting to see the number of Americans checking out my web site compared to Canadians, Australians, and others. The Irish figures are also interesting because they are so low. The site has had an average of 2,500 hits a week - very few of these have been the result of search engine referrals. Most people will just look at one page or other - stay a minute or so - the norm for surfers - but then there are those few who stay much longer. The From Ireland web site is now finished - like one of these half built houses we see every now and again, except this one has stopped at the foundations. Jane

    1. GRENNAN / LAWLER
    2. I just discovered that my Judith Lawler/Lawlor/Lalor/Laler was born about 1798 in County Queens. She married before 1818 James GRENNAN. They moved to New Brunswick, Canada, arriving there in June 1827, with their four children: Grace b:1818; Elizabeth b:1820; Walter Lawrence b: 1823; and Judith b: 1826. They were Roman Catholics. I do not have exact birth dates. James was born about the same time, 1798. I would appreciate any clues as to where to find their marriage and perhaps their parents. Isn't that every genealogists dream? I am not too knowledgeable about Irish research as this is my first real attempt here. Thanks lots for any help. Pat in Oregon, USA

    1. Trojan horse-Badtrans Virus.
    2. Roger Delaney
    3. Having only now experienced this virus & the problems in removing it ie Norton--McAfee & PC-cillin failed to remove it or detect it ---I thought it might be helpful to let others know how I finally removed it. At the time it arrived I belonged to 9 or more lists---some detected the virus & some didn't It seems Laois county ,Genanz, Leonard nor Delaney lists didn,t but others did so & removed me from their lists. As it was necessary to stay off line to prevent further problems to others & having to delete incoming mail until the problem was solved I no doubt missed some helpful info. If anyone has mailed me without reply please resubmit if possible. It was necessary to search Google for "Badtrans virus & follow the directions"--after removing all 3 files specified the virus now appears to have disappeared.\ I have installed new software but don't feel especially confident now that they are completely safe even when updated constantly. If anyone has better ideas please let me know. Roger Delaney In Sunny Caves Beach NSW rocky@fastlink.com.au Fax (02) 49713750

    3. My apologies to anyone who received any email with my name on---they were not sent by me but by the Trojan Horse or badtrans virus which infiltrated my system & somehow was not detected by Anti virus checker. For anyone who hasn,t had the misfortune of receiving this virus from someone it attached itself to unopened emails & sent out emails with attachments to anyone who posted to lists but with my name as the sender.I trust that my system is now clean & I apologise to all for something beyond my control at the time. 1. Re: Clonenagh??
    2. Carmela, >> how you would advise Pat to proceed in locating the township, for the marital certificate. << Actually, I wouldn't. As Pat asked: >>Can anyone give me any assistance is locating Clonenagh,006,Laoighis,Ireland <snip, and> have been unable to find this location. Thanks for any assistance.<< So that's all I did - find the township. I really don't have any knowledge beyond the geographical help (and historical tidbits). I find that many people who are searching for ancestral information are also searching for the exact locations in Ireland where their ancestors have lived, married, died. And many of those searchers are interested in putting a dot on a map and, in many cases, going to Ireland to actually visit the locations. I'm afraid that that's about the extent of my abilities and information. Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

    3. Hi Pete, Thank you so very much for this information. I have been trying to find this little township for 2 years. It is wonderful to know it actually does exist! My next problem will be to see how I can find any other info on this marriage. LDS shows an IGI record but I have no access here to LDS records. But, I shall persevere. Thanks ever so much again for your help. Anything I can do to return the favor? Pat...on the sunny Emerald Coast of NW FL.

Pat at happytalk@fwb.gulf.net writes: < Can anyone give me any assistance is locating Clonenagh,006,Laoighis,Ireland >> Certainly, Pat, Clonenagh is one of the premier monastic sites in Ireland, the location of St. Fintan's famous monastery - founded in the 6th century. Unfortunately, there's nothing but a few lumps remaining (I've been there). It is located right along both sides of the N7 highway between Mountrath and the Portlaoise M7 bypass. It's about 2 1/2 miles east of Mountrath town itself. There are only about a dozen houses, but there are some cross-slabs, a holy well and an old graveyard. 2. So, Pete, how you would advise Pat to proceed in locating the township, for the marital certificate. Surely all the razing was done, long before Pat's grandparents or great grandparents were married. He or she has a marriage certificate number. For example, Lea, aka Lea Castle, is similarly in ruins -- but people live there, indeed in Portarlington. 1. Lea, Co. Laois, Leinster
    2. Researching now, any Dempsey/Moran of: Lea. Town called Lea, Queen's County (Laois), Barony Portnahinch, Civil Parish Lea, PLU (anyone tell me what that stands for? pls?) Mountmelliak, Province Leinster. Our known Dempseys, born 1816 through 1822, Queen's County -- six children immigrated early as 1834: Peter, James, Michael, Christopher, Connor (Cornelius), and Mary. Parents, remained in Ireland, likely died in the Famine: Michael Dempsey and Mary Moran. Father Michael appealed to his son, Michael, and likely the other children if he knew where they were, for help/money during the Famine. Other names associated: Banans (or similar -- this was surely mistranslated from original script authored by Michael, in 1874 to "cousin James"); Martin Dempsey; John White.
