Thanks for all your messages. I have been off line for a week now getting rid of a virus that was sent to me by some kind person and infected the whole of my PC hard disk including all my software. So everything had to be dumped, the hard disk reformatted and I also had to purchase a new modem (which didn't go down very well). I still have to upload some more of my software so I hope everyone will be patient as I have lost all my email addresses as a result of the virus. So if you were a regular and I haven't been in touch with you lately (Rob, Bob, Jane, Dan, 'Carloman', plus anyone who knows me), please send me a mail and tell me what I have missed. This should be of more interest to Laois researchers than any others.........it is a mail I sent to the Genire list tonight and I have to go back to the Laois records and check on the surnames found through the whole film as I have for the last set of parish records on the link I give here *********************** A few years ago (doesn't time fly!!) I began to try and put something together re Irish parish records - shortly afterwards I had major computer problems and lost a lot of what was sent to me by people on the mail lists I was subbed to. Since then I have never managed to really get back to it. Recently, I began to try and find what I had received or done myself and put the information together into one file. Even back when I began this I wasn't too sure of exactly what I wanted or how to go about it!! - I just knew it hadn't been done and I felt it would be useful................ So, now, while I have still many other things unfinished I have begun to work on this parish project again. I know exactly what I want to do and how I want to organise it. I've created a very rough web page - no internal links - to search this one you'll have to go to find on your browser. There is some information on a few counties, but one more than others - there is a list of records or what is on one LDS film and it is a right mish mash - Ireland and England together and various Irish counties. What I really want and the way I want this file to be organised and information held on it is at the end of the page - some county Monaghan parish information............I've left out the bit about townlands. I would ask those of you who look at this page to look at the last entries for Monaghan whether or not you have an interest in that county - and then I ask that if you have ever looked at records for any Irish parish records, if you can remember the state of the film or any of the kind of information I give on this page - and then, whether or not you would consider writing to me and telling me what you saw and what you thought of it - and allowing me add it to this file on the from-ireland web site - and I will organise the lot into county information. Eventually the page would become a decent, organised web page with internal county links, which would give new reasearhers some idea of what to expect when they go looking for a film Thanks Jane Please click on this URL if you want to look at the parish page http://www.from-ireland.net/gene/irishparishrecords.htm

I'm long been researching my "tree" in England, but Ireland is new to me, so any chance of some pointers from you old hands out there? Its a familiar story I'm sure. The English census entries indicate births in "Queens County", but no more detail than that, and nothing else to go on. I need to find the birth/baptism details for three sisters: Ellen (1858/60), Sarah (1861/2) and Margaret (1863/4); daughters of James & Margaret MORRELL. There are probably other (older) siblings, since the Mother was born c1812, also in Queens County. Do I have any alternative other than to search all available Catholic Baptism Registers in the County for the early 1860's (gulp)? I tried the Griffith's Valuation (off fiches) but the only "James Morrell" entries were for 1850 (Barony of Maryland West, Township of Killeany). I think that's a bit too early to make any sort of connection; but I suppose there are worse starting points! But how can I suss which Parish covers that area? Any help much appreciated. Not much danger of you ending up "teaching Granny to suck eggs" in this case! Regards, David Lindley Coming to you from Worsley in the Duchy of Lancaster.
David -- I too am just learning about researching Ireland. Today I visited a Family History Center (LDS you know, Mormon). I stumbled onto a microfiche set that has births/christenings, and marriages, presumably deaths also. They are small records -- Search the province, Laoighis, for your surname. There won't be "that" many records. Hopefully, you'll see your ancestors name matched by birthdate. The county and parish, or at least a town should also be there. Here's an example of one couple I found: Marriage records, 1845-1870 Ireland. General Registry Office John Dempsey to Margaret Cassell, 22 June 1846, Lea, Laoighis, Ireland If you have birthdates, have you already tried www.familysearch.org? They were closing the center as I found these records. I'm guessing I'm supposed to order a film now. I did find the above record on the familysearch.org website later, but one can't search the site by Irish county, town, or other, that I know of. Can't wait to hear what other researchers will suggest to you.
I wish to thank all those who helped with excellent ideas for restoring FTM files to new system. The "new" floppy drive was faulty but even so eventually we had to "install" the old hard drive as a secondary drive & copy files from it back to new hard drive. All is working ok now & I will back up on HDD, CDRW & floppies & keep a further copy in the safe---recalling the story of the chap who backed up every where but then his house burnt down. Many Thanks again the information was most helpful. Roger Delaney In Sunny Caves Beach NSW fax 0249713750
is there an expert on Family Tree Maker version 5 who can help me out? I have had to install a new system including motherboard, Processor & HDD.& floppy drive CDRW etc. I have reinstalled FTM but for some reason I can,t import or back up information I previously backed up on floppies? Answer given is can,t read from device What am I doing wrong? Roger Delaney In Sunny Caves Beach NSW fax 0249713750

Hello, I am a new subscriber to the list and I am researching my Ryan and Lucas ancestors from Maryborough, Queens County. My gggg grandfather John Ryan, was born circa 1786. He married Nancy Lucas (date unknown at this stage) and they had four children. Betsy born c. 1815 Catherine born c 1820 (My ggg grandmother) Margaret born c. 1827 Mary born c. 1830. John Ryan was convicted of robbing a laundry in 1829. He was sentenced to seven years and transported to Sydney aboard the ship Larkins (2). In 1832 John Ryan wrote a letter to the Governor of NSW requesting that his family be permitted to join him in the Colony. This request was granted and John's wife Nancy and three of his children sailed from Cork in 1836 aboard the ship Thomas Harrison, arriving in Sydney in June of that year. I've learned that Nancy Ryan lived at Tay Lane, Maryborough, does anyone know if this lane still exists? The eldest child Betsy Ryan did not sail with her mother and sisters to Australia. I have absolutely no other information on her other than she was 17 in 1832 (when her father wrote his letter to the Governor of NSW). I would appreciate any advice on how to trace John Ryan and Nancy Lucas in Laois and also how I am able to find the fate of Betsy Ryan. Best wishes, Terri. Forgive the reposting - had a problem with my email earlier today. Best Wishes, Carol Hepburn chepburn@qwest.net Phoenix, AZ USA **************************************************************** The IrelandGenWeb Project is pleased to announce that the SHAMROCK Tombstone Transcription Project is now an official part of the IrelandGenWeb Project as a Special Project. Please see below for a description of the project. SHAMROCK Tombstone Transcription Project http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/tombstones IrelandGenWeb Project http://www.irelandgenweb.com <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Often the tombstones of persons born in Ireland will list their birthplace in Ireland on the stone. This can often provide the needed clue to continue a family history study in Ireland. SHAMROCK listmembers began contributing tombstone transcriptions which they have found in their own research, either of their own family members or just of tombstones they have come across while doing their research. Originally, these were transcribed to a webpage, but we quickly realized this project had the possibility of growing very large, and so in May of 2001 arrangements were made to transfer this project to a board where persons could enter their own data, and which would be searchable. This also will help guarantee that the data will always be available to researchers. You do not have to be a SHAMROCK listmember to contribute to this project! What is this transcription project for? ------------------------------------------------ This project is for tombstones -not- located in Ireland which indicate a place of origin in Ireland. These may be in your family, or may be just tombstones you have come across while searching a cemetery for your own ancestors. Have you come across a tombstone which shows a place of origin in Ireland, whether it is your family or not? If you have, please consider listing it in this project..... it just may provide a needed clue to someone else. What is not acceptable in this project? --------------------------------------------------- It is -not- acceptable to take information already published in a copyrighted book or article and place this on the transcription board. Please obey copyright laws! Any transcription found to violate copyright will be removed from the board. Only tombstones not located in Ireland should be included. **This project is not for transcribing tombstones from cemeteries within Ireland itself, or for asking for lookups or information on cemeteries or for general queries.
