    2. Christina Hunt
    3. Hi there- I learned a tidbit of info that was new to me and I wanted to pass it on in case anyone has a use for it. If you are trying to find the name of a place and you know the PARISH, but you cannot find this place name you can write to: Place-Names Commission Phoenix Park Dublin 8 Ireland They can often find an obscure name. I thought this was something that you might want to know or tuck away in case it is of future use. Cheers, Christina

    1. [IRL-LAOIS] Ellis Island - manifests
    2. Christina Hunt
    3. Those of you with ancestors who came through Ellis Island and who have found them on the online database (www.ellisisland.com ) probably know this, BUT I have finally gone in and started pulling up the linked ship manifests. If you skipped this step or missed it when the site was so busy I would urge you to go back and take another look. I have found that my husband's grandmother Lizzie Devine said she was going to her brother Thomas in Brooklyn. I had no idea there was a brother named Thomas. Her sister said she was going to her cousin Mrs Bridge in NJ. Long story here but I thought this Mrs Bridge was a sister and now realize she probably was a cousin. If I can find her father's name I will have a brother to our Patrick DEVINE and through him I might find their FATHER! So, a good clue. A friend of mine found her grandmother's father named as the one who paid the fare so she got another generation back. I just wanted to share that you may find some useful clues as well as more understanding of how they made their trip to America. *When you have pulled up the initial listing for your person you will see above it "View Ships Manifest". That is the record to pull up. Good luck! Christina

    3. Thanks, Christine. I wanted to add, that I could not initially find my grandmother. I found her by hunting down relatives. I found her travelling with her new sister-in-law, but her name was abysmally, misspelled from Esposito to Esparito. I have found a number of these kinds of errors in other records, especially places of births. Takes patience. Happy hunting.

So I'm sending it to you so you can check, just in case. Happy New Year John and Helen Robinson "Dear All, I am sorry for this just at this busy time, but I have just received a virus warning from someone that they have passed on a virus to all their mailing list and apprantely it fixes itself on to all my mailing list ... it is not picked up by Norton or other programs. I have checked my machine and have found the virus and deleted it. Apparently you have 14 days where it lays dormant and then it will shut down your whole machine. The following is how to get it off your machine and is easy to follow. The directions for removing it are easy. 1. Go to 'start' - then to 'find or search' (depending on your computer). 2. In the 'search for files or folders' type in sulfnbk.exe - this is the virus. 3. In the 'look in' make sure you're search Drive C. 4. Hit 'search' button (or find). 5. If this file shows up (it's an ugly blackish icon that will have the name 'sulfnbk.exe' or 'sulfnbk') DO NOT OPEN IT. 6. Right click on the file - go down to delete and left click. 7. It will ask you if you want to send it to the recycle bin - say yes. 8. Go to your desktop (where all your icons are) and double click on the recycle bin. 9. Right click on 'sulfnbk.exe' and delete again - or empty the bin. If you find it send this email to all in your address book, because that's how it's transferred. Trust this will not cause you too much inconvenience. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Sorry about this folks, but it is easy to fix if I can do it!!!

    3. This particular virus warning is a hoax. The file in question is a Windows file and should not be deleted. The message should not be sent on. Note the phrase: If you find it send this email to all in your address book, because that's how it's transferred. Any email which suggests that you send it to everyone is a clue that something is not right. Happy New Year... 1. [IRL-LAOIS] Fw: Dowling- Whelan Families
    2. james and dawn dowling
    3. Hello, I am searching for information about Patrick Francis Dowling born 4/27/1837 in queens (laois) county Ireland and immigrated to the u.s. in 1851. His fathers name was Edward Dowling, and his mother was Sarah Whelan or Whalen Dowling born abt. 1815. I believe they are from the parrish of Aghaboe in Queens co. (now laois). Patricks brothers name is also Edward Dowling born about 1847 in same county and also immigrated in 1851 to u.s. He lived his whole life in his brothers home and never married. I have no evidence that Edward Dowling (the father) ever immigrated to the u.s., but sarah whalen dowling did show up living with her son, in a u.s. directory in 1866. Any information or recommendations on how to search for this family would be most appreciated. I have ordered micro films from the RLDS family history center, here in my home town in the u.s. I do know that they had at least one other sibling, but I have no other information in him/her. Thank you in advance for any advice or help. Sincerely James Dowling, (gr. Grandson of patrick) mizzou@mcmsys.com
