Sharon at jheyob@erols.com writes: << she was born in Killimore, Upper Woods, County Queens. I cannot find any Killimore in Laois but I do find a townland called Killinure in Upper Woods. >> Sharon, I think I'm going to regret getting into this one, as I seem to encounter new inconsistencies at each turn. I started by going to the Townland listings and, sure enough, Killinure in Offerlane CP and Upper Woods barony seemed to be a likely alternative (remember, a typed entry could still have been from a hand-written document. An "n" can look like an "m", and a partially-closed "u" could be mistaken for an "o".). So, I went to the Discovery map 54, and there is Killinure townland - about 3 miles NW of Mountrath. So far so good. Then I went to the RC Parish maps (gleaned from the local.ie website). They are not very detailed and I've never felt comfortable using them. In this case, I really question the Laois RC map. I would assume (of course, this is Ireland) that Camross RC parish would include the town of Camross. Looking at the RC map, it doesn't seem so. Therefore, it appears that Killinure could be located in either Camross of Castletown RC parishes - perhaps also Ballyfin and Mountrath as outside chances. The Castletown parish on the map has a parenthetical "(See Mountrath)" underneath the parish name. I don't know what that means. Just when I thought that I was in the midst of total uncertainty, I decided to go to the Townland Index map of the area..........because I espied a Killanure on my Discovery map, another mile to the NW of the Killinure townland. I knew this Killanure was not in the Townland listings. And, sadly, it's not shown on the Townland Index map, either. Of course, neither is the adjacent "Bull Bog", which is also shown on the Discovery map. However, the TI map does show an "RC Chapel" on the now-named R 440 road, right next to the Killanure lettering on the Disc. map. And, sure enough, the Disc. map has the same church shown, but it is nearly obliterated by all of the other map features which seem to converge at this tiny spot. It is possible that this church may be known as Killanure Church (even though there is no Killanure townland). If so, I still don't know which RC parish it would be in. I'm afraid I haven't helped you much, only muddied the water. "It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma". Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

Hi Sharon - Perhaps you are looking for Killermogh (a/k/a Kildermoy). That would be my thinking anyway, given what would be the translation. It is in the dioese of Ossory, in Upper Woods, Clonenaugh. And (rats) I was just at the Catholic parish listing site there last night but can't find where I put the reference! I'll look for it and send it on to you. BTW, if you don't know about the placename "Borris," it just refers to Maryborough which is also called Borris. Hello Everyone, I'm new to the list and would like to ask some questions in addition to posting my County Laois surnames. In Edward Fitzpatrick's (my great, great-grandfather) U.S. Civil War pension files there is an affadavit from his wife Catherine Dooley stating that she was born in Killimore, Upper Woods, County Queens. I cannot find any Killimore in Laois but I do find a townland called Killinure in Upper Woods. Am I right in assuming that this is what she meant? The affadavit was typed, not hand-written so may have been dictated to someone else. If Killinure is what she meant, how can I find out what Catholic parish would have her baptism records? I believe Upper Woods is in the Civil Parish of Offerlane. When I look up Offerlane in familysearch.org, the only church records I find are those for Borris-in-Ossory. Catherine Dooley was born about 1830-1840 to Patrick Dooley and Bridget Marnel (maybe Marnell). She came to New Britain, CT. 1850-1860 and married Edward Fitzpatrick, son of John Fitzpatrick and Mary Brophy. He also says he was from County Queens and was born about 1840. Thanks for your help. The bedt place to look for any Dowlings in Wicklow would be in Brian Cantwells gravestone memorials of Co. Wicklow. Most likely parishes or areas clse to the Carlow border to begin with. McCaffrey in Meath or there abouts then try taking a look at the distribution of the surname in teh Griffiths or Tithes depending on the teim frame - Griffiths would have been c.1860 and Tithes twenty to thirty years before hand depending on county - Griffiths Valuations began in southern counties and worked their way up the country so the farther south you look the closer the two run together - evern a look up on the Griffiths cd will give you some idea - do NOT decide that it is the be all and end all. Meath Gravestone transcriptions - a lot of them were published in The Irish genealogist - I don't know the URL for the Irish Genealogical Society which is based in London and I don't knwo if they do look ups or have contents on line yet - do a google search - they at least may turn up Mccaffreys from meath that you'll not find in any other Irish records - Meath gravestones if I remember rightly do go a nice way back. Ship lists to Philadelphia - it was a major port at one time, so don't depend on what you find out from there absolutely either. I'm doing an awful lot of don't re absolutes in this post - sorry Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul E. They would have left from Dublin most likely if heading for England and then Cobh in Cork if heading elsewhere - ship lists for that time frame are few and far between. You're probably talkinout some who would have left as members of the army or those who may have left to go work on some land held by a landlord from their home locality in the new World - whichever part. Have you ever tried contacting Brian Dowling who has a particular interest in Laois and lots of photos of Laois places on his web site. Most importantly - Brian is building a Dowling database. He already has extracted the 1864 and 1865 civil brith registrations I think it is for ireland and has them on his web site at: http://fp.dowling.f9.co.uk/ For Aghaboe I have some of the people who are listed in the Tithes a: http://www.from-ireland.net/aughaboetithes.htm and there are Dowlings in there........... a description and history of the Parish : http://www.from-ireland.net/aghaboeparish.htm That's an old page and the script font etc have not been reduced as on the rest of the site yet so apologies if you find it hard to read. The legend Bewitched Butter is about Aghaboe parish if I remember rightly - written by one of our most famous story tellers - John Keegan http://www.from-ireland.net/stories/bewitchedbutter.htm again an old page with the larger font that I haven't reformatted yet. I have ordered micro films from the RLDS family history center, here in my home town in the u.s. I do know that they had at least one other sibling, but I have no other information in him/her. Hi ..., I'd have thought that not too much of a problem, since most of the basic 19c records you'll need to find your ancestor - e.g. BDM records and Griffiths Valuation etc - are filed under parishes, not towns. Also, the Irish parishes seem to me to be quite small and there's probably not more than one town in most of them, and sooner or later you'll probably come across a pysical address in one of the records which will give you a town name.
