    3. Thanks Jane and Michael. It's wonderful that you keep telling us of such resources, and I appreciate all you put into this for us. Pardon my ignorance, but could you please explain what Parish History Books are and what information they contain? 3. Just in case there is anyone going to be in or around Laois on the May Bank Holiday weekend....... Half-Door Club Festival, Community Centre, Castletown, Co Laois 3-6 May 2002, E40, $36, £25 This popular weekend attracts dancers from as far as Europe and America with five ceilis and two workshops during the four-day bank holiday weekend. Five great bands are playing during the weekend - Matt Cunningham on Friday night, Swallow's Tail on Saturday night, the Emerald Ceili Band on Sunday afternoon, the Abbey Ceili Band on Sunday night, and the Glenside Ceili Band on Monday afternoon. Night ceilis begin at 9.30pm and afternoon ceilis at 2pm. The workshops are by Pat Murphy on Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday morning. Most dancers head over to the Pastoral Centre after the late ceilis where there's a cup of tea and a session. The Pastoral Centre also offers reasonably priced full board accommodation. 2. Michael Brennan
    3. The following is a quote from Sean J Murphy's web site which I think will explain fully why we all need to Lobby our local Irish Embassies "Catering for the growing numbers who wish to trace their Irish ancestry requires flexible and creative thinking on the part of the authorities responsible for record repositories. In England one well received initiative has been the creation of the Family Records Centre in London. Why could not a similar Centre be established in Ireland, holding a range of copy records and in particular copies of the indexes at least to civil (GRO) records of births, marriages and deaths?" "Now a second required initiative is the creation of Internet-based research services, with census, civil registration and other records being digitised in order to compile online searchable databases. This type of service is well established in Scotland in the form of Scots Origins, and is currently under development in England. Why is there is so little urgency about establishing similar government-sponsored online genealogical services in Ireland?" 1. [IRL-LAOIS] DUNN and FINN names
    2. Bill or Cathy McGrath
    3. My great great grandparents were THOMAS DUNN and MARGARET FINN. They came to Hurley, near Kingston, NY in the mid 1800's. Up until today I had no idea what part of Ireland they came from. Today's mail brought several death certificates on my Dunn's from Norwich, NY and low and behold one of them indicated that Thomas Dunn and Margaret Finn were from Queens County, Ireland. First thing I did was sign up on the County Laois mailing list. Based on data on the various census reports, my Thomas Dunn was born around 1820-1821 and Margaret Finn was born anywhere from 1821-1828. Would love to hear from anyone searching these names in County Laois. Regards, Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY

    1. [IRL-LAOIS] Re: IRL-LAOIS-D Digest V02 #54
    2. Hello, I need More info on your grandfather. Like, what was his birth date, or year. If it was after 1906 you can get his birth record from the state (New Castle, PA). From 1893 through 1905 birth records are at the County Courthouse. Send for your grandfathers birth record. Also who raised him? Depending on his birth year he would be listed in the 1920 (Soundex-indexed) or 1930 census. In genealogy start with what you know. Your grandfather and then work backwards. Good luck Jackie
