There are no directories that would list people from Coolrain over the periods you mention Gordon............ Colrain is a one street village. Is, was and always has been. It has two pubs and maybe a third but I've never noticed it! The pubs are probably there as long as the village - I've no notion of their ages, but the one that is called Sheerans may possibly be older than the other. So, that would be your best bet as regards finding the pub that Martin Pheland owned/rented whatever when he was about. Pubs in Ireland or a lot of them tended to have shops - that is pub and shop in one - the owner could probably list the building as whichever he chose. You walked in and there was the grocery section where the Missus served.........and then at the back was the pub. Sheerans is one of the better well-known pubs in Laois - for it's music, the fact that it is thatched - no longer owned by the Sheeran family, but leased out. The other pub in the village may well have been there when everything was thatched and back when Martin Phelan was about..........more than likely so. I've never been in it, but I have in Sheeran's - so I guess maybe I'm biased towards there. I have photos of set dancing in Sheerans...........maybe some inside, but definitely outside - not much of the pub itself, but really more a little like what the Laois people can be at (as well as the others who join them from other counties and other parts of the world when they get going) and I can send you some copies if you'd like. Mind you, these would be big files and take a while to download. Thought I had them on my web site but can't seem to find them - only Dowlings in Errill. John, Here the only (4) Becton's on the birth CD in the BIVRI2 disks. These disks have very limited data on them, the IGI is better. There are NO Becton marriages in Ireland, 4 in England but they are not listed on this post. Hi Folks, Would sks be able to tell me where I could find out the address of the residence of Martin Phelan. He had the following ocupations at the following times in Coolrain, Offerlane Parish: Road Contractor - up to 1864, Shopkeeper: 1865 - 1867, Publican: 1868 - at least 1872. Are there such things as Trade Directories? Thanks in anticipation. Gordon
Gordon, Check the County Laois (IGP) Genealogy website. We have a lookup offer for a trade directory. http://www.rootsweb.com/~irllex/ The lookups are at the top of the page. Thank you Michael! there are sure more than the map said. I will look into this. I am grateful. tish
I am new to this list, and have tried this question on other lists without success. Perhaps I will be lucky. I am looking for the parents and siblings of Thomas VANSTON born between 1810 and 1818. There were not many VANSTON's in Ireland that I could find on the surname map. But Laois was one of the Counties that named a couple. Thomas married an Agnes Brenan in Ontario Canada, but they had known one another in Ireland. He came to Canada about 1830. Does anyone recognize the name VANSTON? I would be grateful for any information. Thomas is my gr.gr.grandfather. Thanks, Tish from BC Canada tish@cablelan.net
I have and additional bit of info that comes from Coral who is the Co. Wickow IGP Coordinator. She wrote to Eneclann Ltd to check out whether there would be a cost involved etc. The answer is that there will be. "We plan to publish the entire original set of Griffith on-line (all 300+ volumes), but on a pay-per-view basis. It will be cheap, and you will be able to search the source and see the original pages. It will also be free at the National Library of Ireland's premises only." I hope this helps. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. The following is an announcement from Origins.net and Eneclann Ltd.: Origins.net (http://www.origins.net) and Eneclann Ltd (http://www.eneclann.ie/), in association with the National Library of Ireland, is to make the complete Griffith's Valuation of Ireland available on the world-wide web. This monumental 19th century work is a primary source of information for family history researchers, and is used as an invaluable substitute for the Irish censuses, which were destroyed when the Public Record Office was burned down in 1922. The new web service, to be launched early next year, will be the definitive resource for Griffith's Valuation. All available copies of the Valuation - which was published in several versions at different times between 1847 and 1864 - will be indexed and digital images of the source publications made available on the web site. The selection of the original documents has been made with the assistance of George Handran, a world expert on Griffith's work. About Griffith's Valuation Between 1847 and 1864 the Valuation Office, under the direction of Richard Griffith, carried out the first systematic valuation of property holdings in Ireland. It contained information concerning over one million people, from the smallest farmer to the largest landlord. Because most of the census records for the nineteenth century were destroyed in 1922, when the Public Records Office was burned down, the Griffith Valuation represents the most comprehensive survey of households available for the period. For this reason, it is a principal tool of genealogists and local historians. Unlike previous attempts to index or publish Griffith's Valuation, this will be the first time the entire survey has been published since it was originally issued in the 19th century. This edition will contain all the revisions and amended versions that were published over the 17 years it took to complete the valuation. No library in any country in the world, including Ireland, has a full set of the Griffith Valuation. So for the first time, users of the new web edition can be sure that they have all the source material at hand in one place. They will be able to search a complete database of personal and place names, and then access scanned images of the original published pages. About the National Library of Ireland The National Library of Ireland has just celebrated the 125th anniversary of its foundation. As the library of record for Ireland, the National Library aims to collect, preserve and make accessible materials on or relating to Ireland, whether published in Ireland or abroad, and a supporting reference collection. The Library's current collection of some six million items constitutes probably the most outstanding collection of Irish documentary material in the world, an invaluable representation of Irish history and heritage. The National Library has long been one of the key centres for family history research in Ireland. The Library's Genealogy Service - an expert service staffed by a panel of professional genealogists, together with experienced Library staff - is designed with the specific needs of family history researchers in mind. Among the key sources consulted by genealogists in the Library are microfilms of Catholic parish registers, trade and social directories, newspapers, and rentals and other records of the former landed estates. These records, and many other sources used for family history research, will continue to be freely available to personal callers to the Library and, in many instances, use of these records will be greatly facilitated by free on-site access to the new Griffith's index.

Conor Newman, an archaeology lecturer at NUI Galway, said the discovery at the ancient site made sense of the positioning of other graves and monuments in the area. Mr Newman, who has been working on the Hill of Tara under the State-funded Discovery Programme since 1992, was delighted by the find. "It fills a very important place in the jigsaw because it allows us to make sense of the distribution of other monuments all around it." The Discovery Programme, set up under the auspices of the Heritage Council, carried out a survey of the Hill of Tara between 1992 and 1996 when Mr Newman was director. When Mr Newman moved to Galway he continued to be involved in the project Using sophisticated technology, he and his team of experts mapped what was underground. The work was slow and tedious because it yielded such a huge amount of information. What they uncovered eventually at the crown of the hill was a huge, oval-shaped monument measuring about 170 metres at its widest point. Around it are 300 post holes measuring two metres wide, indicating a massive human effort involved in the construction. "We think it probably dates from 2500 to 2300BC and still had a big physical presence even after the posts were taken out or rotted," Mr Newman said. While the monument is located just below the ground's surface, there are no plans yet to dig it out. "There was a time when excavation was the first step in archaeological research. That's not the case now because it really is the systematic destruction of a monument. When you are dealing with something as important as the Hill of Tara, you don't do something like that lightly." Mr Newman reckons they will be able to learn more about the site from the data before the ground itself is finally excavated. "What we have is the clearest underground image I have ever seen. This one jumps off the page." Mr Newman is concerned about a planned extension of the N3 motorway from Clonee to just north of Kells. One of the sections from Dunshaughlin to Navan runs along the east side of the Hill of Tara. I have absolutely no doubt that they will be destroying dozens of monuments connected to Tara. ************************************************************* Ellen Evert Hopman, author, herbalist, Druid Priestess www.geocities.com/gaias_song/willow.html " Gaine daughter of pure Gumor, nurse of mead-loving Mide, surpassed all women though she was silent; she was learned and a seer and a Druid."
