My grandmother was Ida Wrest (married name Leslie) and I believe the Elizabeth Wrest below was her sister as my mothers cousins were Brophys (John, Mary and Paddy). The placename Clonincurragh also rings a bell from stories of my mothers. I don't know very much about the family going back farther, so any information would be very welcome! In 1999 I corresponded by email with Brian W. HANDCOCK (then residing in Scotland) who was a descendant of John HANDCOCK (b c 1880) of Boherard, Ballinacolla, Queens County. As so often happens, his email address is no longer current and I have no other contact address for him. I would very much like to communicate and pass on to him some 'new' ancestral information. I am hopeful that through this list someone else will know of his HANDCOCK research in Co Laois and can pass this message on to him. His ancestors were also in Abbeyleix and Rathdowney and related surnames were REDHOUSE and FAIRBROTHER. Jo Grant (Australia) - also with HANDCOCK ancestry in Co Laois, (Stradbally); Co Wexford (Whitechurch and Kilmokea), Co Westmeath (Athlone and Moydrum).

Thanks, Dave, for the Griffiths list. I have looked up the individual county dates countless times, but never took the time to make a list. I printed out your posting and am putting it with my Irish Records books, so that it is readily available. Deb ___________________________________________ Deborah Large Fox www.deborahlarge.com
Hi all, Thanks to everyone woho expressed their appreciation of this index. I checked these dates out sometime ago in the National Library in Dublin but I do not have access to the original books. I depend, like everyone else, on online access so I cannot carry out searches for others. Griffith Valuation Sutvey is searchable online at http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php [Ask About Ireland - free] and at http://www.irishorigins.com/ [Origins Network - a very worthwhile subscription site]. are not abailable on these sites but LDS apparently have them on film as well as the Valuation Office in Dublin - again I cannot undertake searches for 3rd parties. Hi all, In order to help pinpoint the accuracy or relevance of the Griffith Valuation survey I did out this index of year surveyed by county. Griffiths Valuation 1848-1864 Index of Year Surveyed The survey started in Dublin and Waterford in 1848 and then worked up from Co Kerry & Cork moving northward and finished in Armagh in 1864. I've been following the conversation about Michael BOWE and Bridget TOBIN in Ballinakill who were married c 1790 and had a daughter, Bridget. My ancestor is Thomas BOWE born about 1765, married to Julia LAWLOR c 1790 both from Ballinakill. I am wondering if Michael and Thomas may be brothers. Anyone have any information or thoughts about this? Barbara
Tom, Sorry I have no real data or tips on Laois to give you. Why not ask on the Laois List there are many people with first hand knowledge and some actually live in Laois itself. You have lots of time to put together a package. If you know dates/surnames names/maiden names/other family members and townlands/parish if you have them and post all to the mailing list Michael Brennans website is a good place to start http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mjbrennan/ Jane's website: http://www.from-ireland.net/ she is from Laois but lives in Dublin Laois Message Board: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/mb.ashx Laois Mailing List: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/IRL-LAOIS.html and don't forget to Goggle. This is exciting! The John Brannon, son of Patrick, who you mention is one of my stepfather's ancestors. He settled in Virginia where he was called "Irish John." My stepfather was named John Brannon, he was the son of William Brannon, son of John Brannon, son of Bushrod Brannon, who was a grandson of the John Brannon who emigrated. I have a list of all the original John's children, will find and post it. Some lines spelled it Brannon and some Brannan.
