I haven't found the web info Liam quotes yet either. I happened to be at PRONI. If you can get to National Archives either Kew, London, or Dublin, or a LDS Family History centre (or to the Police Service Northern Ireland museum) - I don't know where you're based - you can look up the Register on micrrofilm. I'm happy to do it when i,m next in PRONI, but it may be a week or two before that happens. Meanwhile, just to tantalise you, the Edward Rabbett who may be your ggf is Service number 48368. Also indexed are- Bartholomew H Rabbett, Number 56981 Fraser Rabbett, " 44642 Michael Rabbett " 69568 Thomas Rabbett " 49446 William M Rabbett " 52597, and James Rabbet " 47709 Michael Rabbet " 53030 and 7 other variants. Maybe some are family names. It's only about half an hour to find any of them. Let me know. All the best. Rose Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know he was in London in 1924 as he married my grandmother there. I hope you do not think this is being cheeky but is there any chance you could please look for my great grandfather also Edward G Rabbett. I have been told that he was in the RIC. I believe he was born in 1959 (not 100% sure) and may have joined the RIC in 1982. If there is a website I could check then I will do so but have searched and found none. Perhaps you could advise on this please. I am ever so grateful to you and if you can provide any info on my great grandfather that would be the icing on the cake. I look forward to hearing from you and once again many thanks. Kind Regards Kathryn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Here he is. Service no. 78013, Rabbett, Edward G Born 23 Sept 1901 Height 5 feet 8 1/2 ins. Native county King's Co. Counties in which connected Cork E, and Kildare. Recommended by D.I. Riordan. Prior occupation - None Date of appointment 18 Jany.1921 Allocation Wicklow on 24 April 1921. Disbanded 23 Mar 1922, TS Wicklow No 5. CA £50-14-0. The last line was a sort of severance pay, the standard amount, and quite a lot of money! Police were not allowed to serve in their home county, nor (usually) where family members were serving - "counties in which connected". There are six other Rabbetts and a few variants in the index to the Register, so you should have a look yourself - it may be a family tradition. Good luck. Hi Kathryn, I realise that the spelling is slightly different from your ancestors, but you may be interested to hear of one of the better-known Rabbittes here in Ireland - Pat Rabbitte, current member of parliament and former Leader of the Irish Labour Party. He was born in Co. Mayo, and I note from Liam's earlier reply that there is a cluster of Rabbetts in Co. Mayo. Anyway, for what it's worth you may wish to browse the following links:- http://www.labour.ie/patrabbitte/biography.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Rabbitte Regards and good luck with your research, John > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Thu, 18 Sep 2008 19:26:08 +0000 > Subject: [LAOIS] THE RABBETTE OR RABBETT FAMILY FROM PORTARLINGTON > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: KathrynBryant1 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2629/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I am trying to trace any information about my ancestors. There are a few books to be bought at some expense but wonder if there is anyone out there who may have access to a record of the serving officers etc. I also found a site that lists all officers killed during their service with the RIC. My great grandfather was Edward Gerrard Rabbette also name given as Edward Gerard Rabbett. Unfortunately I cannot give any exact dates but my grandfather was born in 1901 if this is any help to ascertain how old my great grandfather would have been and as to what period of time he would have been in the RIC. I don't think I can give his e-mail on this tread but if you type, Ronnie Matthew Portarlington in your search engine, he should come up. They were French Hugenots living in I beleive Portarlington. My grandfather Edward Gerrard Rabbette or Edward Gerard Rabbett was born in September 1901 in Portarlington. His father was also Edward Gerrard Rabbette and could have been the other variation as above. I have been told that at some point my great grandfather was a Police Inspector. I have no idea when great granddad and great grandma were born or where they lived exactly. I don't know if anyone has any knowledge, obviously through history as to any info on this family. I have also been told that my great grandparents left their land etc to the Church. I would be ever so grateful if anyone can throw me a lifeline please. I know it is probably a long shot but hope and pray someone can come up with some info. Regards Kathryn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
