I have been tracing an Andrew Griffith in my own family and was working on him a few days ago. He must have subconsciously crept into my post when I started writing about Griffith's Valuation in connection with Andrew Delany! I don't have any Delaneys (that I know of) among my direct ancestors. But many relatives of my extended Keyes family married Delaneys. And many Delaneys served as baptismal sponsors for these families. They all lived along the Tipperary-Laois border, where the surname is/was very popular. The spelling appears with and without the "e" in Irish parish registers - no pattern whatsoever to it. The spelling varied at the whim of the person recording it. If you have access to a Mormon Family History Center, you may be able to order and view the records of Dunkerrin Catholic parish (Offaly & Tipperary), 1820-1873, on microfilm. The film number is 979695 Item 1. Notes in the Family History Library catalog say: Microfilm of original manuscripts. Poor filming quality; some text may be illegible. The Catholic parish of Dunkerrin was created by the union of Moneygall and Barna parishes. It includes the civil parishes of Castletownely, Cullenwaine, Dunkerrin, Finglas, and Templeharry in County Offaly, and Cullenwaine and Rathnaveoge in Tipperary. Perhaps when (if) all the Heritage Centres in Ireland participate in the Irish Family History Foundation's online project, you might one day find the marriage for your Andrew Delany. I am hoping that Laois, Offaly and Derry will one day be added to the records already available online at http://www.brsgenealogy.com/. It is a great research tool. I also received a note today via FHUK from a lady in Ireland who agrees that Kitty was commonly used for Catherine and Kathleen. She also suggested a look at the registers, saying that the priest may have been less than perfect in his bookwork, or the transcriber was somewhat slack. :-). Brickanagh sounds a good idea - Templeharry, Kings, with Cormack, Delany and Tierney. I don't quite follow your last sentence - I guess you mean to say Delany instead of Griffith .,. (too much excitement). Nothing given, I'm afraid. See attached. Onwards and upwards. Cheers, Colin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have cases in my own family's records from the Catholic parish of Templemore, Clonmore (in Co. Tipperary, adjacent to the Laois border) where some records say Kitty and others Catherine for the same woman. So, I would say this record is a possibility. It is hard to say, without looking at other register entries near this one, whether the names recorded for the women were their maiden names or married names. The norm is maiden name, but I have occasionally seen what looked like the married name recorded. If you notice that all the mothers have the same last names as the fathers, then you know that the person recording the baptisms was probably not recording maiden names. But sometimes you just don't know. It could also be that no last names were listed for the mother in the original records, so the married name was used in the transcribed record. In my experience, either one of these occurrences would be unusual, but not impossible. You really would need to look at the original. Priests also made mistakes in recording things sometimes. But a Delany married to a Delany is also possible. Don't be concerned about whether or not there was an "e" before the "y" in Delany. Spelling truly doesn't matter - it is the same name either way. If you look at actual parish registers, you will find names of people and places spelled in a variety of ways. Spelling was much less important then than it is now. Bricane might be Brickanagh, a townland of about 545 acres in Templeharry civil parish, Kings County (Offaly). There were people named Cormack, M'Cormack, Delany and Tierney listed in Brickanagh in Griffith's Valuation (printing date for Griffith's was 31 May 1851 for this area, so the information was gathered just a bit earlier). But there was no Andrew Delany mentioned as either occupier or immediate lessor in that area. Was any townland given for the Andrew Griffith marriage in 1844? I am sure they will help, and the "border" issues are noted (I did not know this). After a quick 20 Euros expenditure, for the transciption info, I am wiser but not closer, so far. :-) The Baptism Record of 'that' Catherine Delaney (sic. with E) shows the date 5/4/1835, address, Bricane, and father Andrew Delaney; mother KITTY Delaney. (Dunkerrin, Co. Tipperary, RC) Hugh LARKIN and Jane MEAGHER as sponsors. I wonder if Kitty was ever used in lieu of Catherine ?, and I assume that Kitty was not actually a Delaney, but only the married name was shown, not her maiden name.? I found no records for the marriage of Andrew and Catherine or Kitty for that matter, but I did find an Andrew Delany (sic no E) who married an Ellen KELLY 31/01/1844, Dunkerrin, with witnesses John TIERNEY and Ellen TIERNEY. Given that the immigration records report Catherine's mother (and father) had died pre 1856, this could be a second marriage, or an entirely different Delaney. I need to be able to find some baptisms, as you have provided in your wonderful post above regarding the "cousins".. I mentioned previously that records for Dunkerrin Catholic parish, which straddled the Tipperary-Offaly border, appear at the North Tipperary site. Also included are records for these other Catholic parishes that also straddled that border: Birr, Bournea (Couraganeen), Shinrone, Roscrea. People from both sides of the border appear in those records - they didn't just include the ones who lived in Tipperary! Here is that (possible) marriage I found earlier for John Tierney and Anne Delany: Church Marriage Tierney John 1825 Co. Tipperary Parish: DUNKERRIN (RC) Church Marriage Delany Anne 1825 Co. Tipperary Parish: DUNKERRIN (RC). I also looked for possible baptisms for children of this couple after 1825. I looked for Tierny children bapized in Dunkerrin RC parish with father's first name John. (Of course, they might have been baptized in a neighboring parish. You can do that search yourself!) Obviously more that one John Tierny was fathering children in Dunkerrin parish just after 1825! I have marked a few of the entries below that might refer to the "cousins" you mentioned who arrived in Australia in 1853, ages 18 and 20. A "Standard Surname Index" search at http://tipperarynorth.brsgenealogy.com/ for "Birth Records for Tipperary North" for Surname: Delany, Firstname: C, Father Firstname: Andr, Parish/District: Dunkerrin (RC) yields the following record: Church Baptism Delaney Catherine 1835 Co. Tipperary Dunkerrin (RC parish) father: Andrew This Catherine's age on 6 January 1856 would have been 19 or 20 - the same as yours, who arrived in Australia on that date. Have you purchased the transcription of this record online (5 Euro) to see if it could be your Catherine? The mother's name and names of sponsors usually appear on records of baptism like this one. A similar search at the same site for the marriage you mentioned also yields this possibility - in 1825, not 1823: Church Marriage Tierney John 1825 Co. Tipperary Parish: DUNKERRIN (RC) Church Marriage Delany Anne 1825 Co. Tipperary Parish: DUNKERRIN (RC). Of course, there is no guarantee that these two even married one another, but the year and parish match one another and are close to the 1823 date quoted in your family history for a John Tierney and Anne Delany in Dunkerrin. I might point out that Dunkerrin Catholic parish straddled the border of Tipperary and Offaly. Records for both sides of the border appear at the North Tipperary website as "Tipperary".
