Laois: An unusual service for emigrant Laois people A new service launched following the recent reopening of St Peter and Paul's church in Portlaoise will offer an unusual service to those who have emigrated from the county. The webcam available from the parish church will be of particular benefit to those in the USA who are undocumented and are unable to return to Ireland for family funerals. According to parish priest Father John Byrne, he has already received reports back from former parishioners who have seen parish Masses broadcast on the web. The service, which will also broadcast weddings, can be accessed at http://www.portlaoiseparish.ie
No apology needed. Many Laois boys have done the lonely work of soldier/sailor. DELANY (Queen's County, Ossory): I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether a claim for re-instatement has been lodged with the Estates Commissioners by Bernard Dunphy, who was evicted in 1882 from a holding on the estate of Henry Cornelius, Rosna, Clonan, Coolrain, Mountrath, Queen's County; whether he is aware that the farm remained on the landlord's hands and was let by the eleven months for grazing purposes until recently, and is now taken possession of by a daughter of the landlord, who has applied to the Board of Works for a loan to build a dwelling-house; and, seeing that the evicted tenant is still living and has four sons and one daughter depending upon him, can he say what action the Estates Commissioners are going to take in this case, or whether the Board of Works is prepared to advance the loan. MR. BRYCE: The Estates Commissioners inform me that an application for re-instatement has been received from Bernard Dunphy. They have inquired into the matter and have learnt that the owners, having no other place to live in, now reside on the farm from which Dunphy was evicted, and will not consent to reinstate the evicted tenant. Dunphy's name, however, has been placed on the Commissioners' register of applicants as being a suitable person to work land, and his case will receive consideration in the event of the Commissioners acquiring untenanted land in the district. I am informed by the Board of Works that an application was made to them by Anna W. Cornelius and others for a loan of £200 for the erection of a dwelling upon the farm in question. The applicants have now deferred the matter till next spring, and the Board, therefore, have not yet considered whether the case is a suitable one for a loan. >From "THE PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES (AUTHORISED EDITION), FOURTH SERIES, FIRST SESSION OF THE TWENTY-EIGHTH PARLIAMENT OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND, 6 EDWARD VII, VOLUME CLXVI: COMPRISING THE PERIOD FROM THE TWENTY-EIGHTH DAY OF NOVEMBER TO THE TENTH DAY OF DECEMBER, 1906; FIFTEENTH VOLUME OF SESSION 1906; PRINTED AND PUBLISHED UNDER CONTRACT WITH HIS MAJESTY'S STATIONERY OFFICE BY WYMAN AND SONS, LIMITED, FETTER LANE, LONDON. The two parish registers which begin in 1823 (baptisms)and 1820 (marriages) have written on the front of them by the Parish Priest 'Ballenakill, Ballyroan, Abyleix & Knocgordegur'. The Abbeyleix & Ballyroan registers on a different film are supposed to begin in 1824 for both marriages & baptisms. There is no mention in any index of the RC parish of Knockardegur or 'Knocoredegur' These two parish registers therefore give us records for the parishes of Abbeyleix & Ballyroan which are not supposed to exist. Author: sniliaghin Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2658.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Deborah, I've indexed most if not all, the names of the Heads of Household for Laois as per the 1901 census. Most people who research their ancestry or come to Ireland - they want to know who or where they came from, why their family left, they focus on the time of leaving and they forget that there would always hve been somewone left behind. They never think of using records post the year or time, period that their own ancestors left They forget to be open, they focus on a time, the way a surname is spelled, a placename Anyway, you seem to have a bit more than just Ireland or Laois in your family hitory, something causes you to focus on the Mountrath area. You have an unusual surname, albeit common as muck as a first name which make sit impossible for the likes of me who has tons of Laois info to search through No way I could have the time to go through whatever would turn up in a search - sorry, there are too many possible variations on the surname My advice to you -0 and you're working on short notice here.....Do you have a family history library close by? Go se what they have in stock, find out how long it takes to get stuff once you order it in.......... Don't let however long that is upset you. If there is something you can order in, then don't bother with it when in Ireland, work with things you can't get over seas Most specially though, don't let genealogical research and finding out where your ancestors came from be the most important thing to do when you come here. Enjoy yourself when you are over here, iunless the main reason you re coming for is research...... then, stay in Dublin, that's the mainplace that the records are Jane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
