I am sorry for not mentioning I had the following information about him 1880 Census Standish Acres I Chicago, Cook, Illinois, a printer, aged 45 from Ireland birth date of 1837. Died 11/25/1905 married 10/18/1859 to Matilda Bernabe of & in Montreal Canada Anglican Faith. I also have the 1880 census in Chicago, Il. Standish arrived in the Port of New York from Liverpool in July 1857 from there I found him in Montral, Canada where he met Matilda Bernabe or Barnaby born 10/01/1939 in Canada died 1912 Chicago,il. Found the baptism of daughter Mary Matilda in 1861 and the burial of son Standish in 1865. There is another Acres couple - George and Annie. They were godparents for Mary Matilda. Standish and Matilda C. were godparents for several of George and Annie's children (1861, 1863). George was a Staff Sergeant 1st Battalion Seventeenth Regiment 17th regiment of Foot, and also I believe he was Standish"s brother as word from my parents has it he had a twin brother. Later in 1863, when his son Thomas George was baptized, looks like George was a color Sergeant 1st Battalion 17th Regiment of Foot. I have not been able to find Standish nor Matilda's record of immigration from Canada nor his ship record in New york to find the name of his parents or town of birth in Ireland. The key sticking point in this is that I have done all the research I possibly can on these people to this point. The primary records I have simply state "Queens County" on Martin Whelan's children's birth certs and his own death and marriage certificate of - no additional information! I have the names of his parents William Whelan and Winifred Kelly- from his death and marriage certificate - nothing more - and do know that he had 2 siblings - nothing more. The problem arises primarily as the detail provided is broad - no one has been able to find Martin Whelan on shipping lists into NZ - either from foreign ports or via Australia and no documentation indicates which town or townland he was from in County Laois. Given that I have seen up to almost 5000 Whelan's in one area when I looked on one website - the possibliities seem exhausting. What I would like is for the name of some capable honest researcher that I could commission to do this for me - as I am not able to a! dvance further given my geographical position. Your suggestions a helpful and some of them I had explored. I thank you for taking the time to respond. Anyhow I will press on somehow. My Bell ancestors are originally from Bellview (which I believe has been renamed to Blackhills). The last Bell (William Bell) that I know of living in Bellview is shown in Griffiths valuation. The Bells and Carters are related but this relationship may go back to the early 1800s or earlier. My line of Bells left Bellview over the years and lived in Clonduff, Rearbeg and Drummond areas in the early 1800's. Many Bells left and settled in upper Canada. My line came to New York in 1871. Jack, if you come accross any Bell names in the planner I would very much appreiate them. My email is, [email protected] Thank you. Author: chlang99 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2678.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Catholic records would be church parish records for the location in County Laois (formerly Queens County) where the event, i.e. birth (baptism) or marriage took place. The dates you have pre-date the beginning of civil registration/vital records in Ireland in 1864 (Protestant marriages in 1845). Therefore the Ireland General Register Office which holds civil registration records http://www.groireland.ie would not have records for your family's time period. There's a list of the names of the towns and townlands in County Laois in the Ireland Townland Database http://www.seanruad.com and select Queens County from the drop down menu. Here's a link to a map of the Roman Catholic parishes in County Laois. Click on each parish to find out where the records can be searched as well as the dates covered in the records, you'll note that many of the parish records don't go back far enough for the dates you need: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/laoisrc.htm Since you don't as yet have a birthplace or marriage location in County Laois for your ancestors and since many of the Roman Catholic parish records don't go back far enough to include the dates you need, you may have all the Roman Catholic parish records searched and if your ancestors were born or married in a parish whose records don't survive for the dates you need you'll never find them. it would be best for you to do additional research in your emigrant ancesstor's civil and church records and their children's wherever they emigrated to find out specifically where in County Laois they were born, i.e. the town or townland. Then you can determine if the church parish records survive for the dates you need for that location and have those parish records searched. Otherwise you'd have no necessity to have them searched if they don't survive for the dates you need. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have priced this research at Irish Midlands society but that seems particularly expensiveat 40 Euro plus postage and a 6-8 week turn around. Could anyone suggest and alternative. Also, the stones seem very old so church records would have to be the only way. Ballymoneen is north of Ballyroan village and is not marked on the laois County Council web site!! but is within 2 miles of the village. Headstones erode away with time so, as I said ,the only way is church records and that ain't gonna happen!! Sorry for all the bad news!
