Author: deborahrea1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2658.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Dawn, It was great to hear from you, esp. with all the family tree connections between the Cornelius's, Armstrongs, Biggs and Floods! Have you checked out Antony Maitland's Genealogy Site (http://www.antonymaitland.com/)yet? In looking at Aletta Biggs Armstrong Antony and we on the Cornelius-Shields family tree site (http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=920237&pid=-1060142435), owner Rosemary Cryer ([email protected]) have her listed as Mary Aletta Biggs, b. abt 1779 and married to Thomas Armstrong abt 1793 when she was around 14 years of age (this is according to Maitland's Genealogy site). It looks like we have her being married at age 5 - which is wrong of course! I wonder if they're one of the same person or mother and/or daughter? Do you have any dates to confirm their birth, marriage, deaths? According to Antony M's site Edward Flood was married first at 18 years of age to a Miss Driscoll. She then died after 8 years of married and Edward went on to marry an unknown lady - was this your ggg grandmother? At the moment, we have Thomas Armstrong m. Mary Aletta Biggs with the marriage lasting for 8 years (he died). (Then their son Thomas m. Catherine Louisa Cornelius who then had a dau. named Mary Aletta Biggs b. 1812-1813. With regard to Richard Cornelius who was a witness to Edward Flood's wedding in 1847. Am wondering if this was Ricard C. b. 1826 and who died in 1879? I know that Edward have m. at age 18 but not when he was born. I just got a message from an Allen Heath on GenForum (http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/print.cgi?longfield::14.html)saying that Richard C. b. 1826 had a son Charles William C. who was Allen's g grandfather! It's a small world. With regard to Henry C. being a tenant (along with Edward Flood) in Elderfield. am assuming that this was the Henry b. in 1766 and died in 1826? Mary Aletta (mother?) then m. a second time to a Luke Flood - a marriage that lasted 7 years (he died). She then m. a James Horan with Mary Alletta Biggs being their dau. who died in infancy. Does this match up with what you have researched? My personal email is [email protected] I hope that you will email me and/or Rosemary with further information. By the way where do you live? All the best, Deborah Rea Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Catherine was a prolific author with a number of books published and was a journalist for a while on the Weekly Irish Times but I have nothing on her life in Ireland. She appears in the 1811 English census living in London and died in Bury St Edmunds, England, in 1935. Again, I know nothing of her later life in England apart from her fascinating account of her early years in Somerset. I'd be grateful for any info or leads. 3. Hi I have just joined this list as I have discovered that my George Chadwick who lived in Dublin City and Cavan Town actually was from County Laois/Queens. On the occasion of his marriage in 1813 in Dublin he said that he was from the Parish of Aferlin in Queens County. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any such parish and wondered if anyone could help me with where that might be. Also is anyone else researching this family? George married Hannah Young in Dublin and named his only son Hutchinson Chadwick. I have also found a William Chadwick in Bradford, York, England also with a son named Hutchinson Chadwick who states by the 1891 census that he was born in Ballyfyn in Queens County. Hutchinson is such an unusual first name, I suspect George and William could be brothers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Jan Vernon Sydney, Australia

    3. Offerlane parish is quite large as it is an area that is not really amenable to agriculture. It is located along the bulge in the middle of the western edge of the county and is mostly what are called the "Slieve Bloom Mountains" (although by North American or Swiss standards they seem more like hills to me!). Ballyfin is just at the base of the mountains, on the east side. If your family was Protestant, the parish registers go back to just before 1800 and are accessible in Dublin. Hutchinson is such an unusual first name, I suspect George > and William could be brothers. The townland of Ballyfin (about 239 acres) is located in the civil parish of Clonenagh and Clonagheen, a large civil parish (over 45,000 acres) adjacent to Offerlane and to the east of it. The townland of Ballyfin is about 3 miles northwest of the town of Portlaoise. It is within a few miles of the boundary with Offerlane parish. To locate Bllyfin, go to Google maps [http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl] and type into the search box the following string of place names: ballyfin, county laois, ireland The townland of Drim just WSW of Ballyfin is in Offerlane, which gives you an idea how close the parish boundary is to Ballyfin. There are 6 listings for William Chadwick in Griffith's Valuation, all in the townland of Ballyfin Upper, civil parish of Clonenagh and Clonagheen. These appear to be the only listings in Griffith's for the surname Chadwick in County Laois. On a 16-acre piece of land (lot 39a), he is listed as occupier (immediate lessor: Earl of Mornington, a big land holder in the area), and, in turn, Chadwick appears as immediate lessor for several houses and some of that land to Owen McCann (39b, house and land), Garret Kelly (39c, house), John Doheny (39d, house), Margaret Scythes (39e, house) and Johanna Ward (39f, house). This accounts for the the 6 listings in Ballyfin. It sounds as if the first name Hutchinson could have come from a surname. There are 57 listings in Griffith's (as both occupier and lessor) for people named Hutchinson in County Laois; 25 of these are in the civil parish of Offerlane and 4 in the civil parish of Clonenagh and Clonagheen. The townlands in Offerlane are Cardtown (7 listings for John D. Hutchinson), Cummer and Gorteennameale (1 each for John D.), Johnsborough (2 for Jno. D.), Monasop (11 listings for Jno. D.) and Rossadown (3 listings for Anna Hutchinson). The townlands in Clonenagh and Clonagheen are Ballylusk, Cappanacloghy, Knocks and Mountrath, this last one being a town about 4 miles SW of Ballyfin (I didn't locate the others); the names there are Alice, William, Thomas and Michael Hutchinson. I have no connection to either the Hutchinson or Chadwick families. I hope this helps. Geralyn Woods Barry in Oregon, USA

    2. Mary Gregory
    3. I am trying to find out more about my Kerwin/Kirwan ancestors of Abbeyleix, and would be grateful of any help. Where exactly, did John Kerwin,(a baker) and his wife Mary Murphy live,(the only address I have for them is Abbeyleix, they were there from the 1860s until the 1890s). Many of their eleven children died in childhood, where would they be buried? Who were the parents of Mary Murphy, and also, who were John Kerwin’s parents? There seems to be a family connection with the Townlands of Rathmoyle, Ballymaddock and Knocknamoe, but I don’t know what it is. Please could some one point me in the right direction, to find out any of this.
