Beford Gazette Beford, PA July 7, 1899 THE THOMAS WHITE MONUMENT Unveiled and Dedicated on the Fourth Large Crowd of People Present About five thousand people witnessed the unveiling and dedication of the Thomas White monument in the Evans graveyard near Coaldale on Tuesday. The Saxton and Cessna bands furnished music for the occasion. The patriotic organizations of several counties were represented. The order of exercises was as follows: Music, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" Invocation...Rev. S.B. Evans, Milton Music...Band Address of Welcome...Prof. G.W. Alloway, Youngstown, O. Music...Band. Brief history of life and services of Thomas White...Jonathan Evans, Harry Cook. Recitation, "Boston Tea Party,"...Miss Sallie Evans, Saxton. Presentation of Monument...Prof. E.H. White, Saxton Acceptance...Rev. E.E. Harter, Dudley Dedication of monument by committee Music...Band. Recitation, "Declaration of Independence," ...Miss Verna E. Horton, Broad Top City Music...Band Oration...Hon. J.M. Reynolds, Bedford. Music..."The Red, White and Blue." Reunion of descendants of Thomas White. The inscriptions on the handsome shaft are as follows: Thomas White. Born near Kilkenny, Ireland, March 19, 1739. Member "Boston Tea Party," December 16, 1773 A Revolutionary Soldier Died near Robersdale, Pa., Sept. 13, 1820 ------ They never fail who die in a great cause. The block may soak their gore; Their heads may sodden in the sun; their limbs Be strung to city gates or castle walls; But still their spirit walks abroad. Though years Elapse, and others share as dark a doom They but augment the great and sweeping thoughts That overspread all others, and conduct The world at last to freedom.--Byron. ---- ELIZA wife of Thomas White.
