Hi michael, I notice you have a Elizabeth(Lizzy ) Walsh in your tree, I am tracing my husbands ancestors there surname was Welsh and we believe they came from Kilkenny as they were Coalminers, I know you say Walsh and our are Welsh but it seems there wer diff. in spelling. I am wondering if you have any info on Elizabeth family as we are looking for a James Welsh born 1836/37 James father was James also. I know this is a long shot but as tracing thr irish ancestors in the 1800 is very hard, i try anything. regards beryl welsh
Hi; As we mentioned before, we have a web site dedicated to a number of Irish families that came from Ireland to Canada in the 1820's. These families settled in St. Columban - about 40 miles northwest of Montreal. Our site is at www.stcolumban-irish.com . Many of these people came from around Kilkenny and there were a number of Walsh - Welsh families in the community (The spelling of Walsh / Welsh seemed to change depending on how the priest wrote the entry - or how it was later transcribed). A very quick check of our records indicates a marriage between a Bridget Welsh and Michael Farrell on January 19 1835 in Ste. Scholastique, Quebec. (Ste. Scholastique was the parish church for St. Columban prior to about 1836-7). In this document, Bridget Welsh's parents are listed as James Welsh and Mary Griffiths. Of course, since it is a marriage, her parents could have remained in Ireland and their names were simply recorded for the records. There were also many other Welsh & Walsh families noted. I know that it is a long shot that this James Welsh is the one that you are looking for, but, it is always a remote possibility. St. Columban remained an almost exclusive Irish community from the early 1800's until about 1880 and then the families started to move to the larger nearby cities of Montreal & Ottawa; other parts of Canada; and throughout the United States. Hope this info might help your research a little. Hi again; As a follow-up to my last post about the Welsh / Walsh families of St. Columban, Quebec, I noticed another entry in our records for a James Walsh (Spelled as Walsh rather than Welsh). However this James is noted as having been born in St. Columban about 1836 and having died in Chicago about 1903 and married to a Mary Hartigan. This James parents are noted as John Walsh & Ellen Blanchfield. The details on this James could be closer to the one that you are researching.
