Dan, Did your family settle in MA? There is a John Carroll who served in Co. D, 50th Regiment, MA Infantry (Militia) during the civil war with a wife named Anastasia on his pension record. If this is your John, I suggest obtaining a copy of his civil war pension record from the National Archives which may include a great deal of information including his Irish origins. If you see a connection here let me know and I can email you a copy of his civil war pension record image which includes claim numbers.
