In examining the Ellis Island entries for those who gave Castlecomer as last residence, I noted a few lads who arrived on the Aurania 17 Sep 1897 had given their destination as a Christian Bros. School in Maryland. In the 1900 census several of them re-appear at the Annendale Normal Institute in Vansville, Prince George's Co., Maryland, as students. Some of the names on Ellis Island are Michael Devy 11,James Devy 11,Patrick Bergin 11,Edward Holland 11,Eugene O'Neill 15. Of these, the 1900 census shows four enrolled at the school: Michael Deevy 16, James Deevy 16 (both so spelled on census), Edward Holland 16 There are more students enrolled at the school, many with Kilkenny/Laois names, who may be from the Castlecomer area, but did not note it as last residence. The 1900 census I used is the LDS one, compiled by volunteers. 1900 is now 98% complete, and is Free to search, they do require a registration.. It returns the actual census images. For my purposes I found it best to click on indexed census for 1900, then in the search box enter name, birth year, and country of birth. Too many returns, go back and refine. It is an every name index.
