Hello listers: This is interesting information about the emigration of Michael and James Deevy from Castlecomer, County Kilkenny, to Maryland, USA in the late 19th century. A lot of Castlecomer people emigrated to the Ottawa - Montreal - Toronto triangle in Canada beginning in the 1820's. A Michael Deevy came from Castlecomer to work on building the Rideau Canal in the Ottawa area. He was here in 1829 and stated that all of his near relatives were already here in Canada with him. There were probably several dozen families here, at that early date, from Castlecomer and many more families came here through chain migration until the mid 1850's, when migration was mostly to the U.S. If you go to my main web page at www.bytown.net , scroll down to the search engine, and enter the word Castlecomer or Kilkenny or a surname (one at a time), then click on "Find", you will find some early emigrants from Ireland to Canada. I'd be interested in hearing from researchers of families who came from Ireland (anywhere) to the Ottawa, Canada area in the 1800's. ...
