All I know was that he was born in Kilkenny. He was ensigned in to the 16th Regt of Foot (Infantry?) and in 1842 was transferred to the Court of St James in the 5th Regt of Her Majesty. He was later in the Ceylon Rifles. It has been suggested that his father may have been called Willy and his mother's surname was Bayley. I would be most grateful for any leads. Thank you. Silvana

    3. My GG grandfather was Michael Foley from Ballincur, Mooncoin Co. Kilkenny. He married Judy Maher from Ardera, Mooncoin Co. Kilkenny sometime before 1884 when I have their son Thomas being born. Michael and Judy's other 9 children were James, John, William, Michael, Edward, Andrew, Alice, Norah and Hannah. I don't have the birth dates of any of the other children. The family lived in Cloncunny, Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny. Later, Thomas my G grandfather married Elizabeth (Lizzy) Walsh from Tobbernabrone, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny - probably at Templeorum Parish RC church. Anyone having anything to substantiate or add to this brief family history would be my best friend in the world!! Thank you. 3. Hi again; As a follow-up to my last post about the Welsh / Walsh families of St. Columban, Quebec, I noticed another entry in our records for a James Walsh (Spelled as Walsh rather than Welsh). However this James is noted as having been born in St. Columban about 1836 and having died in Chicago about 1903 and married to a Mary Hartigan. This James parents are noted as John Walsh & Ellen Blanchfield. The details on this James could be closer to the one that you are researching. 3. Hi; As we mentioned before, we have a web site dedicated to a number of Irish families that came from Ireland to Canada in the 1820's. These families settled in St. Columban - about 40 miles northwest of Montreal. Our site is at www.stcolumban-irish.com . Many of these people came from around Kilkenny and there were a number of Walsh - Welsh families in the community (The spelling of Walsh / Welsh seemed to change depending on how the priest wrote the entry - or how it was later transcribed). A very quick check of our records indicates a marriage between a Bridget Welsh and Michael Farrell on January 19 1835 in Ste. Scholastique, Quebec. (Ste. Scholastique was the parish church for St. Columban prior to about 1836-7). In this document, Bridget Welsh's parents are listed as James Welsh and Mary Griffiths. Of course, since it is a marriage, her parents could have remained in Ireland and their names were simply recorded for the records. There were also many other Welsh & Walsh families noted. I know that it is a long shot that this James Welsh is the one that you are looking for, but, it is always a remote possibility. St. Columban remained an almost exclusive Irish community from the early 1800's until about 1880 and then the families started to move to the larger nearby cities of Montreal & Ottawa; other parts of Canada; and throughout the United States. Hope this info might help your research a little. A nice town. > Can you tell me where the Welsh mountains in ireland are < Playing around with Google, I am confident that they are in Co. Kilkenny. But just "where" is a bit more difficult. Google had an entry from the Walsh family website (you probably know about that) that mentioned the Welsh mountains, with an alternative name of Sliegh "Brenoch". The Sliegh is undoubtedly currently spelled Slieve or Sliabh - meaning a mountain or mountain range. I don't know about the Brenoch, so I'll go out to a couple of placename mailing lists and fora and get a better response. There is a Brandon Hill (Cnoc Bhre/anail) just a couple of miles S of Graiguenamanagh. The Cnoc (hill) is more or less in the same category as Slieve. I doubt if the Brenoch is at all related to Brandon, but I'll try to find out. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

    3. As many of you may or may not be aware of, Rootsweb's lists are going through changes. They are being changed to the Mailman program to administer the various list's needs, such as subscribing, unsubscribing, etc. For the past month or so, I have participated in a trial program to work out the bugs of switching from one program to another and I can attest that this will be fairly painless. However, some may find some changes and have questions. So, for the first week or so, the list is open to address those issues as they arise and I will be here to answer any questions you my have, either on the list of off the list. Rootsweb has devised a schedule for switching the many lists that they have over to Mailman. This list will change over on Thursday, August 17th. If you are interested in when your other lists will convert, you can check the schedule here: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
