Surnames: Tobin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WWC.2ACI/2968.2.2 Message Board Post: My grandfather, John Patrick Tobin, was born in Kilkenny in the village of Courleigh Feb. 1882. (The town is now spelled Courleagh on the map, though there is not really a town there anymore.) I am wondering if anyone knows about Tobins near Paulstown in Kilkenny. John P. left for America in the early 1900s and settled in Albany, NY. Does anyone know of any possible Tobin family members in Kilkenny or Carlow? Many thanks!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WWC.2ACI/3734.1 Message Board Post: There aren't any emigration records in Ireland. There are no census records for the 1800s. Vital records begin in 1864 except Protestant marriages in 1845. Vital records aren't computerised. You need to know where Jeffrey Brennan was born in County Kilkenny to find what church might have his baptismal record. Jeffrey is a somewhat unusual given name for Ireland and would be rarely found here. Church registers aren't computerised or centralised -- the same as the US. You need to know the specific location of birth to find the church record. You'd also need to already know where Patrick and Mary Brennan married to find the church marriage record -- unless they were Protestant and married after 1845 when there might be a civil marriage record -- and you would also need to know when each one died to find any death record for their dates of death. There might be a civil one if they died after 1864 but many churches kept no burial records. So you need to research any of the emigrants records in the US to find the specific location of their births in County Kilkenny.

    2. Jim Coady
    3. Hi Fred, In your email to Pete you mentioned that the name BRENOCH is probably the Irish version of WALSH. My grandmother, Anastasia BRENNICK (b.1895, d.1973), married a man (John Edward CODY, b.1884, d.1979) whose family was from County Kilkenny, but I have been unable to find the origin of her BRENNICK family. It is my understanding that "BRENNICK" roughly means "man from Wales" which fits with your WALSH surname meaning. Do you have any BRENNICKs in your files? Does your family have connections to Canada, specifically Prince Edward Island? All the best, Jim Coady Researching CODY (COADY), BEAGAN, BRENNICK and McLOUD in Ireland and Prince Edward Island, Canada. - - - - - - - - - - - - > >Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills > of western Massachusetts > > > > > Hi, Pete--A comment that may help or be > redundant--My grandmither's > maiden name was Mary Kennis Brannack.
