    3. Hi everyone! I have a William DULLARD who was born about 1820/21 in Kilkenny. His grave in West Union Iowa USA says he was born 1 Sept 1820 from Kilkenny land. I think he immigrated to New York about Oct 1851. He was 30yrs old at the time. Is anyone able to check the Griffiths' valuation or can point me in the right direction to find his family please? He did not travel with any other DULLARDs and appeared to have married a Margaret born about 1835 Ireland in the US. All of their children were born in West Union Iowa. Thanks for any assistance with this. Best wishes, Judy Jones -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Town, Parish, Barony, etc. < Chris, Killaree is a large townland, about one mile south of the townland and village of Three Castles. Three Castles is the nearest postoffice to Killaree, and is about 3 miles ESE of Freshford town. Both Killaree and Three Castles are in Odagh civil parish and the barony of Crannagh. As far as a mailing address is concerned, I would think that the address as you gave it above, would be just fine - as Three Castles has a postoffice. I don't think the addition of a civil parish and barony to the address would improve the chances of delivery........it might even add a bit of extra confusion <gr>. > I have a photo of a memorial stone that reads Knockbrack, Tralee and on the back of the photo it says Cork but I can only find Tralee in Kerry. Where is it? < There is a Tralee up in Derry, but that seems unlikely. There are a few Knockbrack townlands in Co. Kerry, and three of them are somewhat near Tralee town. But my first choice would be the Knockbrack in Kilflyn civil parish, which is about 5 miles NE of central Tralee town, along the N 69 national road. Another choice might be the one in Kilmoyly CP, about 7 miles NNW of Tralee town. A third possibility would be Knockbrack in Molahiffe civil parish, about 8 miles SW of Tralee. > Also what does Knockbrack mean? There seems to be one in every county? < Knockbrack is generally translated as "speckled hill". I've never quite thought of using the adjective "speckled" as a description of a hill. Perhaps it's related to patches of gorse or heather on the hillsides. There are 44 plain Knockbracks in the www.seanruad.com listing, and an additional 8 of them if you add extensions, such as East or West. But there are many speckled hills in Ireland. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

    3. Thanks Beryl for your email. I do not have much more information than I put in my original letter. By different records that I have, I figure MY James Welch was born around 1844. I am going to take a chance and order a film from the FHC for a place in Kilkenny called GRANGESILVIA. The only reason is that there was several families of Welch and Delany. which were the names of my James' parents. (Patrick Welch & Margaret Delany). There were very few marriages in Lent prior to Vatican II. When there were marriages they were somber affairs--no music etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the marriages in Feb. occurred before Ash Wednesday.

Church registers aren't computerised or centralised. There are no records in Ireland of who emigrated, where they went or what happened to them after emigration. There are no vital records in Ireland before 1864 (Protestant marriages in 1845). Vital records aren't computerised. They're in date order. There are no surviving census records for the 1800s. The first Irish census records are 1901 and 1911 and neither is computerised as yet. They're only available on microfilm. Ireland in Irish (Gaeilge) is spelled Éire. Erie would be a city in Pennsylvania or Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes in the US. Since 1949 when Ireland became a Republic the preferred reference is Republic of Ireland or Ireland when speaking English. Regards. Eilís O'Hara

I know one of their children was JAMES WELCH, who was born around 1844. James came to America about 1859 and settled in Derby Connecticut (also known as Birmingham Connecticut). Thanks Bill NJ USA

    3. Dan, There are two townlands in Kilkenny named Seskin. You can find them by doing a query at this site http://www.seanruad.com/ Additionally, there are Campion families located in both Freshford and Seskin in the Griffith's Valuation. You can query Griffith's Valuation here http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php Mike On 9/6/06, dan <rockydan@cebridge.net> wrote: > > We have a family of Campions in our background. > Margaret Campion married John Brennan around 1845, I think. 3. Dan, Did your family settle in MA? There is a John Carroll who served in Co. D, 50th Regiment, MA Infantry (Militia) during the civil war with a wife named Anastasia on his pension record. If this is your John, I suggest obtaining a copy of his civil war pension record from the National Archives which may include a great deal of information including his Irish origins. If you see a connection here let me know and I can email you a copy of his civil war pension record image which includes claim numbers. They emigrated to North America around 1848-53 through New Orleans on the ship Blake, possibly via Liverpool. Her mother was reportedly a Madden. Their children Robert, Bridget and Mary were born in Ireland. Looking for help on their place of origin and families.

    3. We have a family of Campions in our background. Margaret Campion married John Brennan around 1845, I think. Found a marriage entry in the Lisdowney RC parish register for John Brennan and Margaret Campion on July 30 1845. I am not positive these are our people, but the similarity is striking. At one time John's grandson said the family was from Freshford. The marriage record looks like "Seskin." They emigrated to North America in 1846. Margaret had a brother, (I think) Michael Campion, who emigrated around the same time. They came via Canada to Michigan City, Indiana. Their son Matthew Elevart Campion became a priest in Indiana. I know he was related because the family says a cousin married John Francis Brennan and Margaret Hoffman in Logansport, Indiana. The registry is signed by M.E. Campion. There is some connection to someone named Elevart-Green in Kilkenny. Sure could use some help on these folks. Their origins in Kilkenny and kinfolk.
