Hi - do you know if the Judy Dunne mentioned is a relation of Mattie Dunne (she also had a sister) who is a relation of mine - I have a lot of Phelans in my family tree - some of whom moved to New Zealand and some who were related to Minnie Phelan who married James Lang Any help would be great. Hi Beryl Unfortunately I don't have a James Walsh/Welsh in my tree. But that is not to say that there wasn't one. I am discovering all sorts of names in my irish ancestory where it is a possibility they are mine. I have most of my irish arriving in australia in 1854 but there are still some names I can't find in Australia. Edmund, Edmond, Mary and Patrick, are all siblings of my ggrandmother but unfortunately I can't find them on the same shipping list as parents. In saying that I still don't know if I have the correct ship because my ggrandmother isn't listed with them and it has been suggested that she was put with another family due to them being allowed only 3 or 4 children to sail with them. Who knows! It is a mystery still. I will keep you in mind if I find anything. Looking for any information on the CAREY family who lived in Carrickborne midway between Thomastown and Inistioge during the 1800's. BRIDGET CAREY married my greatgrandfather (MICHAEL LYNG of The Rower) in Thomastown July 23,1860. Angela M. Pieper
I am searching for the ship my Walsh ancestors arrived in Australia on. What I have so far is I think they arrived in Melbourne October 1854 on the ship Black Eagle. The problem I have is that my ggrandmother Ellen Walsh who would have been 4 at the time was not listed with them. It has been suggested that she is the 4 year old listed with the family Lawlor, from Kilkenny, who were on the same sailing. The reason being that under some assisted immigrant schemes the families were allowed to have a certain amount of children with them so they put other children with other families. I haven't been able to confirm if this is correct or not. I also have that Patrick Walsh (my ggrandmothers brother) was born on 30 Jan 1847 in Chapel L. Kilkenny. The sponsors (godparents) at his baptism were Thomas Cody and Maria LAWLESS. Lawlor and Lawless, could it be a typo. Michael if you see this go to http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/Index_search.asp?searchid=24 and do a search for Lawlor, to see if any of the names match yours. I would be interested to hear from you regarding Ellen Lawlor if you have one in your family tree. Hi Michael, In searching for my Wall ancestors in Kilkenny City, I ordered a film through the LDS library. It turned out to be a film of the transcipt taken by a Walsh family member, of a large number of Walsh and related families records (extending to 1000+ I guess) across the county. It did not help me but you will have a better chance, I am sure. Sorry I don't recall the reference but it will be on record at any LDS library. We're planning to visit Kilkenny City this summer. I'm trying to obtain contact with anyone who might recognize this family: Patrick Egan married Mary Cunningham in Kilkenny City in 1857. They lived on Watkin St. Patrick and Mary had three children, all of whom were born in Kilkenny City. They were Bridget (1858), Mary (1860) and William (1863). The family emigrated to Lewiston Maine in about 1869. Both Patrick and Mary died in Lewiston in 1874. Their son William, who was my wife's grandfather, went to Newport Rhode Island as an orphan to live with his step-sister. Mary Cunningham had previously been married to John Smyth. They were married in Kilkenny City, lived on Watkin St. and had four children including Catherine (1849), Patrick (1852), Ellen and Elizabeth (1854). The three girls emigrated to Lewiston Maine with Mary and her second husband, Patrick Egan. Eventually, after their mother and step-father's deaths, Catherine and Elizabether moved to Newport Rhode Island. Ellen remained in Lewiston, Maine. I can recommend "The Abbey" B&B, across the street (literally!) from Jerpoint Abbey near Thomastown in Kilkenny. Talk to Mrs Helen Blanchfield...nice rooms, cooked to order breakfast, very scenic, and great location. We went to Jerpoint first thing in the morning and had the place to ourselves. G'day everyone We (Mum Dad and 2 kids under 8) are venturing to Ireland in May - we are interested in suggestions re accommodation in Ireland. What is the best way to go - we will be visiting Co's Kilkenny, Wicklow, Clare and Cork - in no specific order - trying to ascertain information on families (Byrne, Monaghan, Mahoney, McNamara and Hayes) in various locations within the Counties. Thanks in advance Shane
I would be most interested in rents or any documents identifying the Dreaper family. Richard Dreaper was, I believe, a middleman for the Wandesford and owned/rented a farm in early 1800s. Hi, came across this place where we stayed. Great place, good breakfasts, family into genealogy. I believe that Mrs. Phelan (the hostess) used to be at the Rothe house. Not too far off the beaten path North of Kilkenny city. We stayed in one of the carriage houses. Country setting, good for walks after dinner. I normally plan ahead to where I am going and what day I'll be there. You can find some b&bs online and make your arrangements online. I have had good luck doing so. You didn't mention where you are flying into...Dublin has a Tourist centre and many of the larger towns have where you can book b&bs. They are very handy and helpful. I think, if you are driving, you will have a challenge with size of car. You might want to reserve a van. The cars and vans are much smaller than in the US. You may be able to fit the people in the car but the luggage won't fit. Deborah: Probably not much help, but I have quite a few Callan records where you're surnames appear. Just sending them in your: "You Never Know file!"
