Beryl, Coal miner - might be Carlow or Wexford? Someone on the list may be able to help there. If Junior left in the late 1850s, his father would have probably been listed in Griffiths Valuation. This Valuation was done around 1850 and took several years. Griffiths Valuation is online and can be found at: _http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.htm_ (http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.htm) Unfortunately, Welch is a pretty common name and may be a bit more difficult to find than some names. If you are not familiar with Griffiths Valuation, it is a listing of people occupying land; it is not a census. Only the head of the family is mentioned. One very good website for Co Kilkenny is: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/) For Co Carlow: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlcar2/Site_index.htm_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlcar2/Site_index.htm) _http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlcar2_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlcar2) Another excellent site for the country with a lot of infro from this area of Ireland is: _http://www.from-ireland.net/_ (http://www.from-ireland.net/) Others may be able to give you additional information. Hi Kate and List In my hunt for my Dermody family I have come across some interesting stuff on my Dwyer connection. I have found an article in Australia that gives an extract of one William Dwyer's memoirs. In it he states he was born c 1825 in Green St Kilkenny and his parents were Patrick Dwyer and Bridget Byrnes. He was sent to school at Chapel Lane Kilkenny that was run by his uncle. Stated also was that he married Anastasia Dermody (my GGGgrandmothers sister Maria) just before they set sail to Australia in 1856. He was a teacher at the Kilkenny National School around 1853-1855. My dilemma is that Kilkenny City had both streets mentioned and so did the townland of Callan just outside Kilkenny City. William also had brothers Timothy and Denis and a sister called Catherine who also came out to Australia with the help of William as well as his parents Patrick and Bridget, he only states that there were others left behind. Wondering if anyone has come across this family in their searches. Anastasia's parents were Kyrian Dermody and Mary Cody, Kyrian had died by the year 1863 and Mary had gone to the USA by that time as well, Maria is the only known sibling that we have but I am sure there must have been others as Mary would not have gone to the USA on her own. Hoping someone can help with this one. Rick

Hi Maureen, I am looking for my husbands grt Grandad James Welsh born about 1836 in Ireland his father was also called James Welsh don't know mothers name both James were Coal miners. James Junior came to england in the late 1850 He married a Mary Robinson/robertson in Stoke on trent staffordshire in 1861 then moved to Slamannon in stirlingshire and raised a family they had about 6 or 8 children, he carried on being a Coalminer. I hope you can help us. we believed he was born in kilkenny or carlow, because of being a Coalminers but could be somewhere else (where there were Coalmines) regards beryl welsh
Maureen, When did your GGGrandfather emmigrate from Ireland? To where? Was he married at that time? Did he have children at that time? These are very important questions which will give a clue as to where to look for information. Also, how was the family name (and its variations) spelled. What was his first name? If you can give us as much of the above information as you have, we can probably give you some suggestions how to proceed. I am at a loss, the last name is spelled in so many different ways I get confused. But I am determined to find something linking me to Ireland other than the the few papers I have on him. Hi Janette, We may have a connection and we may not. My wife is very closely connected to a John Breen who came from Clonoulty in County Tipperary. He arrived in Australia as a convict in 1836 to serve seven years for manslaughter. If we can connect him with your grandmother's John Breen then I have miles of material on the family. Kilkenny and Tipperary are adjoining counties so the possibilities are strong. If you contact me off list I will send you a file which will give you an insight into our John Breen. If you think there is a connection I will find more info for you. Good luck. Thank you for that Kate. No doubt you are right in assuming that Ballyhale is in fact Ballyhall. I have, in all probability, incorrectly transcribed some information was sent to me. My connections with Ballyhall are Grant and Anderson. But I suspect there is a connection with the Burke (and possibly Stapleton) inscriptions you have listed. There was a marriage in Australia between John Grant and Mary Anne Burke whose father was Patrick Burke with known strong Irish connections that I have been unable to confirm. Maybe these records go some way towards a solution. Thank you again. Your help is much appreciated. We are glad to add transcriptions you may have from your research. That is what we are all about. :) Headstone photos welcome too. Thanks, Christina Ireland Genealogy Projects Archives
Jack, et. al. Been having trouble at the Villanova site searching through the McGarrity and other collections. When I put in Castlecomer as a keyword, I am getting a blank page in return. Does that mean no hits for Castlecomer, or Kilkenny, if you know? If you are getting hits from that method, maybe it is a computer problem.I have been having difficulties with the EPPI site also. Am thinking it is a Microsoft Vista problem. On a general Irish interest note, some of the county heritage centres have begun to put their databases online. I know of three so far--Armagh, North Tipperary, and part of Dublin (Swords). The search function is free, but record retrieval is charged per record. I believe some of these counties have records that cross county lines because I have found some of my Co. Tyrone ancestors in the Armagh database. I am exploring the Tipperary site as well for some of my Co. Kilkenny names. So far, I find this method so much more successful than commissioning research, as I can both direct my own research and also explore. It is a great value for the money, also, although in the end, I suspect I will end up paying more to the centres because I simply cannot resist the urge to hit the "pay" button to see a particular record. LOL I would think this would be a very lucrative move for the research centres. I wish all the heritage centres would follow! Anyone know if the Kilkenny Arch. Soc. has any plans to do so? http://www.irish-roots.net/ Debbie ___________________________________________ Deborah Large Fox www.deborahlarge.com ___________________________________________
