To Maryann, My Cody relatives had a Patrick but he never left Ireland and neither did any of his children. A cousin and I are trying to find descendents of a Patt Cody born 1834 to Richard Cody and Margaret Grace in Inistiogue Co. Kilkenny. Do not see any connection with your Cody at this time. Ruth ----- Original Message ----- From: Maryann Arnold To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, October 27, 2003 7:39 AM Subject: Re: [KILKENNY] re CODY family Hi, I am looking for my great aunt, Ellen (nicknamed Alice) Young Cody who married a Patrick Cody in New York. They lived at least a portion of their married life in Brooklyn. They had 3 or 4 children, I have no additional information on them. I know Ellen was alive in 1959 as she was listed in her sister's obituary as Mrs. Patrick Cody. Her sister was Anne Young Dugan and there was another sister Bridget Young (married name unknown) who also lived in the Brooklyn area. Ellen was born in 1888 in Tullaroan, County Kilkenny. Would you possibly be related to the Patrick Cody she married? I have been at a total loss to locate her and would appreciate any help. Thanks. Possibly the Patrick Cody that came to Ct. was the child of one of my grandfather's siblings. My grandfather died at the age of 61 . The records on his family of origin were located by a cousin through a genealogy research organization in the baptismal records of the Chapel at Inistogue. I am guessing that my grandfather's siblings were married in late 1860's or early 1870's and therefore could have had sons of age to immigrate in late 1800's. > > Not sure if this is helpful. I checked my atlas for Barrowmount and it's not listed so that must be the town; any idea what parish? >> Maryann, This is very strange. Medieval Cistercian monasteries in Ireland were few, but you managed to name two townlands attributed to 12th century Cistercian granges/early monasteries. Annamult, in Danesfort civil parish, is two miles SSW of Bennettsbridge (where the townspeople won a victory today against the National Roads people, who were going to run a new N 9 right next to them - and perhaps through Annamult). There is an old stone barn there in the farm complex, referred to as Friar's Barn. Of course, the Cistercians were monks...... Barrowmount is, not surprisingly, right on the River Barrow in Grangesilvia civil parish, less than a mile south of Goresbridge and three miles about east of Gowran. This is the probable site of the Cist. monastery of Killenny, which was suppressed in the 13th century. "Remains" are supposed to exist, but I didn't see anything there. I'll spare everyone the rest of the ecclesiastical lesson about these two fascinating (to me, anyway) sites and their connection with Graiguenamanagh (Duiske). In any case, that's where the two townlands are located <gr>. Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts
Looking primary for information on Patrick Bowe (born Abt. 1823) in Kilkenny, Ireland (married Abt. 1848) to a Jan Anderson (born Abt. 1828). Michael or Thomas Shannon (born Abt. 1807) married (Abt.1832) a Catherine Roche (born Abt. 1812) note: (more likely to be Michael Shannon). Who's child of Patrick and Jan were a Patrick Bowe (born 1849) who married Michael or Thomas and Catherine's daughter, Bridget Shannon or Shanon (born Abt.1833) married Abt.15 June 1874. In Kilkenny, Ireland. To whom they had one child that I know off another Patrick Bowe born 2nd December 1888 who then married a Therese Mary Stenzel. Gerard Bowe

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WWC.2ACI/3124.1 Message Board Post: Tucker, I checked in "The Surnames of Ireland" by Edward MacLysaght and found the following information about Toler:The name as Toller appears in a list of Co. Leitrim tories in 1692 and this is probably an anglicized version of O Talchair (my note: this is the Irish language or Gaelic version). For derivation see Tolleran. Toler, better known as an Anglo-Irish name, first appears in the seventeenth century in Co. Tipperary and was fairly prominent in the eighteenth. As such it derives from the French tollere, tax gatherer. For Tolleran MacLysaght says: O Talcharain (talchar, obstinate).(My note: this is the Irish language or Gaelic version). The name is now rare but was formerly well known in north Connacht (Co. Mayo). (My note: Connacht is one of the four provinces of Ireland. The others are Ulster, Leinster, and Munster.) Hope this helps. Eilis O'Hara
