Hi Donna, My RYAN's came from both Kilkenny and Cork. My great-grandfather was James Joseph Ryan, born in 1880 in Kilkenny. He came to America (Boston) and settled south in the Bronx, NY where he married Johannah Mary Murphy of Cork, born in 1879. I don't know much about them because I am the only one left alive of my family, so have no one to ask questions of. I know the names of the children they had here in NY, but I do not know if and why they may have left their own loved ones in Ireland. I could really use some help if I knew where to get it, and how to get started on it. I know most of the records are still over there in Ireland, but who to ask?? This may or may not be helpful. In the book "Irish Land Owners of 1876" there is a James Ryan listed with the address Foulksrath Castle, Kilkenny. I don't know if this is the same or different than the castle in Kilkenny City, maybe some of the other listers will know. Here is a list of all the Ryan's for Kilkenny County in 1876 that owned land, their home address (not necessarily the same as land), and the size and value of the property. "L" is for pounds, "s" is for shillings in the value. Ryan, Henry, Westcourt, Callan, 2 acres, 3 L 5 s Ryan, James, Foulksrath Castle, Kilkenny, 573 acres, 408 L 10 s Ryan, John, Castlecomer, Co. You're right, its not an official townland. Entering just plain Tinlough into google gives a number of hits - the one from the Munster Express may be the most interesting. From that description, the settlement/village of Tinlough (apparently a well-know location in the far S. Kilkenny area) would be in this area. Carrigeen village, probably just the 3 or 4 houses, school and St. Kevins RC church [Mooncoin RC parish] shown on the Discovery map, 3 1/2 miles SSW of Kilmacow, is also shown by name on the mid-1800's maps, in the townlands of Clasharoe and Corluddy. This certainly seems close enough to Kilmacow to convince me that Tinlough - wherever it is - is in the vicinity of these two locations. But I'll bet that someone from that south Kilkenny area could tell you in a Kilkenny minute <gr>. Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts
I am trying to locate Tinlough "near Waterford". I have found some telephone listings for Tinlough, Carrigeen, Waterford and some for Tinlough, Kilmacow, Waterford. Are these the same Tinlough. Where is it (are they). I cannot find a townland listed in that area. Neither can I find it on the OS Discovery maps. Best regards, Seamus Moore, Dublin, Ireland.
