Hi Carol, It still needs validating but I believe one of my gg-grandmothers was named Mary Kelley. I have a photograph of this lady -- it appears to be either a wedding or anniversary photograph as the clothes look like those worn for such occasions. I am certain that my gg-grandfather's name was James John Ryan, but I don't know if it is he in this photograph. On the back of the photo is stamped this: Joseph Kissane Merchant Main St. Graig-na-Managh Co.. Kilkenny. I can send you a copy of this photo (email-Norton scanned) if you think it will do some good. Hi Carol, This may or may not be useful to you but from the "Irish Land Owners in 1876" book, for Kilkenny County in that year is: Hynes, Thomas, (home address) America, owned 69 acres, valued at 50 pounds. Maybe you should try this spelling variation in your searches too as there are no "Hines" owners listed. Hope this helps. Hi Everyone: I think this message disappeared into the current pit of lost mail. Maybe it did get posted, but I did not see it. I'm looking for anyone who has the Kelley-Hines combination from Kilkenny in their ancestry. John Kelley and Anna Hines were married sometime around 1820, I know of only one child so far, Margaret. I'd love to discover where in Kilkenny they lived. Do these names resonnate with anyone here? Thanks from Carol McGann in Florida
Palo Alto Reporter Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Friday, May 15, 1896 OBITUARY. Mrs. Ellen Tobin, wife of Thos. Tobin, died at their home in this city, Monday evening, at 10 o'clock. The cause of her death was heart failure. For years she had been ailing, and for eight or ten years she and Mr. Tobin have spent the winters in California for the benefit of her health. They spent last winter there as usual in various places in California and returned to this city, Monday, April 11. The first day after getting home Mrs. Tobin was out of doors, but the next day she did not feel well and gradually grew worse until death summoned her hence, Monday evening. Mrs. Tobin's maiden name was Ellen Laughlin and she was born in the county Kilkenny, Ireland, in the year 1841, consequently was 54 years old at the time of her demise. In 1847 she came to this country with her father and the balance of the family and settled for short time in Massachusetts, but subsequently moved to Illinois, where they resided for about four years. In 1856 the family moved to Palo Alto, being among the very first settlers of the county, and of course shared with others the privations and hardships incident to pioneer life. In 1860 she was married to Mr. Tobin, the ceremony taking place in Ft. Dodge. The young couple started life together on the farm in Nevada township, but in 1893 Mr. Tobin entered the mercantile business in the old town of Emmetsburg, and when the present town was started moved his business over to its present location, thus making them residents of this city since its beginning. Mrs. Tobin was an exemplary woman in many respects. She was quiet and ladylike in her demeanor, always striving to live a conscientious christian life, being a devout member of the Catholic church. She was loved and respected by all who knew her, and her deeds of charity and kindness were proverbial to all but were hampered by failing health. Her death is a severe blow to Mr. Tobin as it deprives him of the companionship of one so dear to him and leaves him to travel down life's pathway along. She also leaves two brothers, Messrs. Lot and John Laughlin, to mourn her loss. The funeral took place Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Catholic church, where solemn requiem high mass was celebrated, Rev. J.J. Smith celebrant assisted by Fathers Costello, Kelly and Carroll. In his remarks Father Smith took occasion to commend Mrs. Tobin for her deeds of love and charity, and said that the beautiful altar in the church dedicated to the blessed Virgin Mary, was the gift of her hand, and that while she had lived she requested him to refrain from making it known to the congregation. At the close of the solemn service the body was laid in its final resting place in St. John's cemetery. [Note: brother Lot's obit states he was born in Castle Warren, Co. Kilkenny in 1839 and that they lived in Worcester, Massachusetts and Elgin, Illinois. Parents were Martin and Mary Laughlin. Corpus Christi RC Church marriage records list date of marriage for Ellen Laughlin & Thomas Tobin as 7 Jan 1860.] FYI-Not related. This is on today's Help Desk: Mail Lists: 2004-02-15 AOL rejecting RootsWeb mailing lists email AOL is again rejecting some or all of RootsWeb's mailing list email. The block is imposed by AOL and can only be removed by AOL. RootsWeb will be contacting AOL to discuss this matter though the likelihood is that the matter will take a few days to resolve. Est. downtime: 1 week(s) This problem started yesterday so not too many AOLers have been dropped so far. If you have an AOL account and you notice you are not getting mail from a list, check the list's archives to see if you are actually missing mail and to catch up on what is being posted. Don't try to resub to the list until the problem is resolved. Another problem, I have encountered since Friday is that some of the Rootsweb pages are intermittently inaccessible. We have discussed it in the Listowners mailing list but no explanation has been given to date. This morning I can't get into some of my list's utilites...Over the weekend I had trouble getting into some of the Rootsweb hosted websites. Yesterday, some normal mail to the lists were blocked by an overly aggressive Rootsweb spam blocker. I checked all my lists and found some legitimate mail and unblocked it. So, if you sent a message to a list, and a day later it posted, now you know why. If you posted a message that did not go to the list, email me off list and I'll look again. If you are experiencing any problems, please feel free to email me off list and I will do my best to help you. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

THE CONNAUGHT JOURNAL Galway, Thursday, May 6, 1824 PROVINCIAL INTELLIGENCE KILKENNY, MAY 1- On Thursday night, the house of a man named Glindon, residing on the lands of Rabeenaroche, near Dungarven, barony of Gowran, was attacked by a numerous armed party, who fired several shots into the dwelling, and endeavoured to obtain admission. The miscreants threatened him with death if he dared to disclose the circumstances of the attack. A few nights previously, a Notice, of which the following is a copy, had been affixed to a tree near Glindon's house: "Mr. Glindon or Glindons I inform you to lave off you land jobing or if not after this timely notice you will ruer the consequence-take notice of his else It will pay you a frightful visit."--Moderator. Has anyone on this list found in your research a marriage between John Kelley and Anna Hines early in the 1800s? I believe they married sometime between 1800 and 1820. I do not know where in Kilkenny they lived, but I'm hoping that this name combination sounds familiar to someone researching Kilkenny ancestors. So far I know of only one of their children, Margaret, born 1820. She was my great grandmother. Thanks to all. Carol McGann in Florida

Today I updated the Parish History Books webpage on my website with another 40 or so books and with more lookup volunteers. Anyone doing Irish genealogical research find these books invaluable to their family history. I didn't know they even existed until my first trip to Ireland in 1999 and accidentally happened on them in Galway Town at Kenny's Bookstore. When I came back from another Ireland trip in 2001 I had collected so many more books that I needed to buy another suitcase at Roche's. Later, I decided to start this website to help those who didn't know about the books or knew about them and could not find any to buy, since many are out of print. When I started the website, I didn't include lookups but did include a form for other researchers to submit books that I didn't know about. Since then, I started getting emails from wonderful people offering to do lookups, so I added Lookup Volunteers. In the beginning, not all counties had many books, but I have since joined all 32 counties of Ireland mailing lists' to reach out to the counties where I am not active so I could include their books. You can access the Parish Books website, by going to the URL under my name. On my homepage, under Ireland, click on Ireland Books. This will take you to the Irish Book Discussion Mailing List webpage. Near the bottom, under Previous Posts, the Parish History Books have four links, listed by county in alpha order. At the bottom of each Parish History Book webpage is a form where you can submit books that are not already listed. I update the site monthly, usually the the first week. If you see a book listed without a lookup volunteer, and you have the book and want to volunteer, email me off list and I will include you with my next update. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
> > >I have not been receiving my mail either > Well, this morning was the first morning that I didn't receive tons of AOL bounces. Some of you still remain on the list because of the strange way the bounces came, with a list of names, not individual, and the Rootsweb computer only counted the top name. However, AOL subbers did not receive RW mail for five days, not because of the Windows interface but because of the AOL anti-spam program. I noticed this morning, on the RW Help Desk that AOL has resolved the problem and now all the AOL subbers are finally receiving RW mail. Welcome back, we missed you. You can catch up with your mail by checking the list's archives. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
