Kilkenny Catholic Parish records. There are loads of Brennans in Ballyragget and the surrounding area , especially Castlecomer, and also plenty of Stapletons. I also have an ancestor Ellen Stapleton; who married a John Bergin, (they lived in Dublin and Ellen died in 1831aged 31) but they probably both came from Ballyragget before moving to Dublin. Let me know if I can help you out at all.

    1. OSBORN
    2. I am searching for the lineage of: JOSEPH FOWLER OSBORN, born September 22, 1768 in New Jersey, and died May 9, 1835 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. It is believed his parents were Joseph OSBORN (1735-1784) and Patience FOWLER. Some sources say Joseph F. OSBORN's father was born in New Jersey BUT some sources say, including published biographies, state that his father was from Kilkenny, Ireland. If anyone has any information on the OSBORN families of Kilkenny they can share with me, I'd be grateful. Thank you. Rebecca Kentucky

    3. Not sure if this can be of any help but there were a number of Brophy's that settled in the area of St. Columban, County of Two Mountains (Deux Montagnes), Quebec, Canada in the early 1800's - I believe that they were all from Kilkenny and likely from Ballyraggat. If you visit the LSD site (www.familysearch.org) and then check the Canadian 1881 census in the search area and put in the name Brophy and the Province as Quebec, you will find a number of Brophy's listed in both the St. Columban area and in Montreal (St. Columban is about 60 miles NW of Montreal). Perhaps they are related to your Brophy ? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, March 29, 2004 4:12 PM Subject: [KILKENNY] Brophy from Kilkenny > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: BROPHY, NELSON > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/mbexec/msg/5538/WWC.2ACI/3298 > > Message Board Post: > > I am trying to find information on a Margaret Brophy (Brophey?) who was born in Kilkenny about 1832. Their children were born in the 1820s. The Brophy mother died there, and the rest emigrated during the famine. That's all I have on Brophy, but I wanted to direct you to http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/ for Kilkenny research. You will find a paragraph about the Brophy surname there. If I recall right, the sept originated in the Kilkenny area and it has been a rather common name there. That may make your research tricky. Try to find out what townlands had both Brophy and Nelson surnames, then see if that parish has birth records for the appropriate years (~1832). Go to http://www.ireland.com/ancestors and put in Brophy surname. Look at the results, then on the same screen, enter Nelson as the second surname. Of those results I might try Laois and Tipperary as being the closest to Kilkenny, since Kilkenny doesn't come up, but you will need to pay to see the results. Still, might help for a modest fee! . Then take it from there. Both websites above will help with the Kilkenny area generally. Good luck!

You are the first other Bowes I've heard of from Ballyragget in Kilkenny. I can't connect with your particular Hannah Bowes, because my Bowes's emigrated during the famine. But they were from the Ballyragget area, I think maybe from Finnan just NE of Ballyragget, but the info they passed on after emigrating was "Ballyragget." In the Griffith's Valuation there is only one Bowes listed in 1849/1850 for Donaghmore Parish (the one that includes Ballyragget), and it is Michael Bowes in Finnan. I think this is the father of my family of emigrants. He was to have emigrated after his children in 1853. He was by then a widower, his wife, an Aileen or Elizabeth Brophy having died. His children were Lawrence (Laurence?), Edward, Dennis, John, Mary, Brigit. All emigrated to central New York. I am working to establish that the Michael Bowes in the Griffiths Valuation is one and the same as "my" Michael Bowes, no small task. It sounds as if th! ey may have left cousins behind from whom your ancestor came. The Bowes variant was not as common as the Bowe variant. Birth records for this parish are missing 1806 to 1855, so Hannah should have one if she was born 1865, but I'm not sure how to locate it off hand. If you find it please let me know what you find out.

You will find the links to the various book webpages at the bottom of the Ireland Book Discussion Mailing List webpage under 'Ireland Book Webpages'. If you made any submissions last month, please check for accuracy. If you submitted a book and want to change submission (email address, lookup volunteer, etc), fill out another form and put 'change' in the field where you want the change. If anyone has or knows of books not listed, you can fill out a convenient form on each of the book list webpages and I update the website at the beginning of each month. Thanks to everyone for making these webpages a very good resource for all those doing Ireland research and a very busy place on the internet. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton

    2. Hi listers, I recently returned from a trip to the Castlecomer area, and was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled on the library on Kilkenny St. in Castlecomer village (the old Presentation convent.) They had the 1901 census of the area in book form, and also Griffith's Valuation. Plus bookbound copies of Deenside, the chatty area magazine first published in 1958, still being published annually at the Christmas season. They also have a great many books about the area in their reference section. The staff is helpful and the facilities are bright and cheerful (and busy busy busy with children, it was good to see that.) Their e-mail address is [email protected] Jack Langton
