Dear List, I am only new to this list and am happy to have joined such a knowledgeable group. I am searching for information of my grgrgrgrandmother, Catherine Howe. She was born circa 1803 in Kilkenny (sorry but that is the only location given). Her father was Garrett Howe and mum was also Catherine Howe. She was a convict transported to Sydney in 1828 on the "City of Edinburgh" for stealing. She may have had a sister, Jane. I know quite a lot about her - even her appearance, but would love to find out about her life in Ireland. Looking forward to hearing from a fellow researcher. I would be careful with this type of request since this individual has not indicated the name of the school that he attends. How do you verify that he is not just working for a marketing concern to get email addresses and names/locations for marketing or spam. Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at [email protected] before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. THE CONNAUGHT JOURNAL Galway, Thursday, May 27, 1824 STATE OF THE COUNTRY KILKENNY, May 19- An adjourned Session under the Insurrection Act was held in the County Court on Tuesday. Serjeant Gould, G.P. Bushe, Esq., Assistant Barrister, and 31 Magistrates attended. Four prisoners were arraigned for being absent from their dwellings more than an hour after sun-set. Two of them, John Day and John M'Kew, postponed their trials until the next sitting of the Court; John Ryan was acquitted, but William Doheny was found guilty, and sentenced to be transported for seven years. On the night of the 11th instant, the house of a man named Thos. Cody, situate near Ballyspellan Spa, in the Barony of Galmoy, was set fire to by the incendiaries, and a great part thereof consumed before the family was apprised of their danger.- Three heifers, the property of Cody, were the same night, inhumanly slaughtered on his land, doubtless by the same atrocious villains, who nearly succeeded in consuming him in his dwelling. Am seeking help in locating the birth record of Ellen Phalen (or any other spelling, even Whalen) b. June 01, 1841 in Kilkenny. She was the daughter of William Phalen - the family immigrated to the USA in 1844. Thank You in Advance, Ruth Hulsey Atlanta, GA, USA
The Heritage Centre at the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, Rothe House provides an excellent service and they hold many records. We sometimes hear complaints about heritage centres but this one is excellent and reliable. I have used them and very satisfied. They may sound expensive but everything is in Ireland including private researchers. Hi John, My maiden name was RICE. My great grandfather John RICE was baptised in Belfast 1828 and married in Capetown 1860. Was in NZ by 1865. Also have Kilkenny connections. Hello, Can anyone recommend a good genealogical researcher for the area of Thomastown, Kilkenny? My Grandfather, PATRICK CONNOR/CONNORS was born (June 9, 1881) and raised in Thomastown, Kilkenny. My Father, his second son, is still alive (95 years of age) and doesn't have any knowledge of his Father's family. I would really like to find some/any information about my Grandfather's parents, siblings and/or family. Any help and/or direction any one could offer would be very much appreciated. I have not yet done an offical search with a family history center in Kilkenny so I think it will be hard to know single family names untill i can trace back properly with the information that I have. I am a brand new lister and looking for any connection to the above names in Kilkenny. I have a Michael McDermott and Mary Flynn parents of James McDermott born approx 1840. James McDermott married Elizabeth Maher (London 1861) and had one child John approx 1862 before coming to Australia aboard the Great Tasmania in 1863 landing in Victoria. They then had a number of other children in Australia. Any suggestions on how I can further research this family would be greatly appreciated. Warm regards Gay O'Neill Western Australia
I am a new subscriber and wonder if there is anyone out there who is researching DELANEY or DELANY. I am looking for a Maurice or Morris Delaney born in Kilkenny in about 1812, also John Delaney who may be his brother or cousin. Morris married Margaret ? from Dublin and they both appear in the 1861 census for London. Morris was a witness to the marriage of Annie Delaney to Joseph Keegan in 1860. Hoping to demolish my brickwall! June Grant
If you have a website or if you want to find a website having to do with the surname you researching or a county in the USA, Rootsweb has an excellent resource center where you can check links or add your link(s) at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/ They are also adding World Countries and at present have: Australia, Canada and New Zealand One word of warning...don't go there if you are short of time, I have just spent an hour on the site and need to go back because I have just scratched the surface of resources. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton
