The basics are, starting from large to small,: Province (like Leinster, Munster, etc), County (like Kildare, Wicklow, etc), barony (like Salt, Carbury, etc), civil parish (like Athy), townland (like St. Michael's, St. Johns, etc). I suggest buying a copy of "Tracing Your Irish Roots In Kildare" by Kieran Keily, M. Newman, and J. Ruddy. It's available from the Kildare Genealogy & Heritage Centre. There are maps of all of these in the book. I am like learning disabled with this Irish boundary business...I mean, I don't understand the definitions of towns, towlands, parishes, the whole caboodle. Would SKS explain in layman's terms, the meanings of these locartion boundaries to me. I can't be the only one who doesn't"get" it.
