With the outbreak of the Rebellion of 1798, a group of republican activists, or patriots, set seige to the main Crown building in the locality. Some years ago. I met Mr. Kelly in the town square, next to the old water pump. Nudging his foot against a small monument, he said, " Your family had a lot to do with this rebellion.."Well, I knew about that in a vague, offish kind of way. "They were the ones who blew up the courthouse," said Kelly. Well, having taught a course in Modern European History for thirty eight years, I was quite skeptical. So, off we rode to the old Quaker Library. There, on several tables, were some of the original interrogations, made in the months after the insurrection, at least one of them implicating Ann Salmon, Michael Salmon and Edward Salmon in the destruction of the building. Interestingly, their names do not appear on the transportation lists. Like so many of the rural Irish, they simply disappeared into an unforgiving black hole.
