I am fairly new to Irish research and just as I get a tidbit I think will lead me to my goal it falls flat. Are there any other records perhaps prior to 1830 besides church records? Are there written tax or tenant records? Are there any district court records, constable records, mortality records, ship records, agricultural records anything which might help find my Smullen family? I have found children in Monasterevin Parish. but cannot locate a marriage record for the parents. I am grateful to any ideas and links. Melissa
Melissa - I'd recommend searching the LDS church film catalog. Any of the films can be ordered into a Family History Center as most churches have a FHC that is open to use by the public. Hours are published or you can call them locally. Use the webpage below to locate MICROFILMed records that you'd like to view. Even if you are not near a FHC or might possibly live near or are travelling to Ireland and wish to view originals yourself, you will KNOW what records have been filmed, where they were located when filmed and when the filming was done. A detail of what is in the record is given in the record description pages. I'm sure there are other ways of finding out what else is available for Kildare and its parishes but someone will have to write about that, I'm best at FHC films. Begin at this URL, you will be searching using TWO buttons on this page, one at a time to completely cover Kildare topics : http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp Select PLACE SEARCH and enter only Kildare in the top box. From the list of possibilities they return, select Ireland, Kildare. A nice list of TITLES is returned, alphabetically arranged by TOPIC. Most have been filmed but you'll have to check each title one by one to see if a button is in the upper right corner of the title description page to see if its been filmed. It will say VIEW FILM NOTES. Head back to the original page I sent and now select KEYWORD SEARCH. For some reason, it brings up titles that a Place Search will not select. Its worth the trouble if you are indeed wanting to see what exists on film for Kildare. If it exists in the LDS church filmed holdings, it exists somewhere in Ireland and there's probably a lot of other books and papers with it. By all means, run the searches again [PLACE search and KEYWORD search] using the single word Monasterevin and see a shorter list of titles. Looks like there are Court Sessions but they are after 1900 only , so I doubt that film will help much. By putting Monasterevin in as a KEYWORD SEARCH produces a nice long list of films for your parish of interest, maybe some worth ordering. Thats my best shot for getting Kildare topics that have been filmed, and therefore exist in Ireland or perhaps at Salt Lake City in book form. Melissa Tenant records apply to estates I do not know what estates were in Kildare but imagine their would have been one, Ships records for people actually leaving Ireland unless they took a direct route from the Port to their destination do not exist, meaning those who crossed to England from Ireland to sail to the states or elsewhere, were not recorded as leaving Ireland ( much like getting a bus ticket) they took mail boats etc, and sometimes they were human ballast on ships, returning to another place after bringing something to Ireland. Constabulary was known as RIC to begin with and yes I imagine that there are records for those folk District court records are listed as assizes mainly Mortality - death records were very slow in being kept and all of those were really subject to parish registers, but I am sure you will find headstones to your advantage on Interment pages, does the new LDS PILOT page hold the marriage you seek for the Smullen name I dont know what era that covers. But in as much as all these records exists they are not online as readily as one desires, there are snips everywhere but not all are on the internet. Tithe records show people paying tithes then followed by the Griffiths which is readily available on line but I cant give you the web sites for Griffiths but imagine a google would locate that for you . It is a hard road you are travelling, but one you will find interesting as long as you dont fold at your first wall. Dont give up, thats my motto, Wills are another thing you have not listed. I am guessing your family were of farming stock by the things you have asked about. I have a James Smullen born 1817 in Co Wicklow who married a Bridget Byrne born c 1820 who have 11 children n Wicklow town but they are not from kildare ............ what do you think?
