The name given then is more likely to be is legal one (though he could also have fabricate documents if he was really motivated) He could have found out when getting a birth cert or baptism cert that his father was not who he thought, which happened quite a lot in good old catholic Ireland. single mothers were so shamed that many devices were invented. I came across a few cases in my professional career. With the marriage cert, and the father's name confirmed, you can proceed and get a birth cert for him.
