Ellen HARRISON married John HARPER at Monasterevin, County Kildare, on 16 Oct 1852 (GRO records). Ellen was born in Co. Kildare 1827/8 as the daughter of William Harrison (no dates) and Eliza(beth) WILKINSON Harrison (born 1803). Ellen died in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, in 1888, and her mother Elizabeth died there in 1884. John Harper was born in Ireland 1830/1 as the son of John Harper and died 1891 in Brantford. John and Ellen’s first known child, William, was born 1854/5 possibly in Canada though one record says Ireland. They had certainly migrated from Ireland to Canada by 1857/8 when daughter Mary was born. William Harrison, a probable brother of Ellen, married Eliza HENSEY at Lackagh, Co. Kildare, on 30 Aug 1846 (GRO records). I have no further data on this William. Henry Harrison, known to be a brother of Ellen, was born 1841/3 in Ireland (where?), married in Brantford 1866, and died there in 1892. Based on Ellen’s and William Jr.’s marriages, it seems likely that the Harrison family resided in or near Monasterevin. Canadian records list the religion of Ellen, John, Elizabeth, and Henry as Congregationalist. That suggests that they were Protestants in Ireland, but that has not been confirmed. The LDS familysearch.org website shows Catholic Church records beginning in 1819 for Monasterevin, but no Protestant records, and no church records whatsoever for Lackagh. So my questions are: 1. When did civil registration of births, death, and marriages in Ireland begin? 1845? 2. Where can I find church records for the Monasterevin area that are not available via the LDS? Any help you can provide on tracing the origins of the Harrison family would be greatly appreciated. Ed Harrison
