Unfortunately I know nothing about Bridget Deegan at all. I got a transcribed copy of her marriage to Owen from Kildare Genealogy, but for both it says 'parents unknown'so whether they genuinely were unknown or whether they were just unreadable I don't know - they can't not have had parents! ;) Like you say, it's not an uncommon name at all. I think what I'm going to do is to send off to the GRO in Ireland for copies of William's Birth cert and for Owen and Bridget's marriage certificate now I know dates to see if they can shed any light! Thank you for the info re sponsors too, I thought it was probably godparents, but wasn't sure.
