Any suggestions about a good place in Galway to get books or maps? >> Mary, For a good map of the Glennamaddy area, I would pick-up Discovery map 39 at the Tourist Office shop at the airport - at least I know Shannon, and undoubtedly Dublin airports would have it. If you're flying into Knock, I don't know. And I would doubt that Galway airport would have them. There appear to be graveyards at the RC church in Glennamaddy, as well as an older one just to the east - but this one is apparently disused and dates from the days of the workhouse ("Burial Ground" is shown on the Discovery map). Also, a cemetery 2 or 3 miles to the NW, just north of Boyounagh in Cashel townland (shown on the map). Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

    2. Dear Eilis, I was reading your response about the maps. I am leaving on Wednesday for Galway to go to the town Glenmaddy where my grandfather was born. Any suggestions about a good place in Galway to get books or maps? I have gone 3 yrs ago to Walterstown Kildare and found my grandmother and cousins graves and looked around the town. Now it's equal time for the other half. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Mary Nelson ([email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])

    3. Not knowing the dates you're interested in or the records, I'll just give general information: Here are the websites for information at the various research locations in Dublin: National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/ National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ Both the National Library and National Archives have a free genealogy service staffed by professional Irish genealogists to help in your research. Valuation Office (Griffiths Valuation and Cancellation Books, Ordnance Survey maps) http://www.valoff.ie/ General Register Office (Vital Records) http://www.groireland.ie/ Bookshops! If you get a chance Easons on O'Connell St. (near the GPO and Millenium Monument) is a good spot to get reference books (and there's a handy internet cafe nearby). Another good bookseller is Hodges and Figgis on Dawson St. not far from Grafton St. You can find some good maps and historical documents for your research. Maps: If possible, get whatever maps you can relating to the areas you're researching in Kildare. Often you can't find them outside Ireland. The Discovery Maps are a good resource. The numbers covering Kildare are 49, 50, 55, 56 and 61. You'll need to look at the individual maps to be sure the coverage area is what you want. Other: Traffic in Dublin will be quite congested so allow more time than you expect. There are generally many others researching at the same locations so there may be lines or delays. Bring as much information on your ancestors as possible. Often people come to Ireland to do research but unfortunately either don't have or don't bring the necessary data. Genealogical staff at both the National Library and National Archives will tell you the same thing. Enjoy your trip and good luck! Eilis O'Hara Ed Kenna said: I expect to be spending a few days in Dublin, in Oct. I am interested in furthering my Kenna, Whelan and Owens of Kildare search. 3. Hi everyone, what's the chances of finding my convict ancestor, with no town of origin?. Catherine Byrne was born in Kildare in c1820, Possible parents named as Mary McDonald and John Byrne. She sailed to Australia in 1839 after being convicted of stealing, she was a kitchemaid.. That's the total sum of my knowledge of her. Any chance of a process of elimination from all parishes?? She married William Reed (Read) in NSW in 1841. I've checked the Griffiths Evaluation 1851 for all civil parishes in Kildare with a John or Mary Byrne. Will that cover people of RC religion? I've printed off all the Mary and John Byrne's that appear, slow and laborious, but I'm tenacious!! Any advice appreciated. Cheers Janine South Australia.

    1. Byrne/McDonald
    2. Hi, The names Byrne and McDonald are Scotch-Irish names that predominate in the northeaster counties like Down and Armagh. I suspect that many of these people came during the 170s during the Clearing of the Highlands while the English were searching for Bonnie Prince Charlie. Are you sure they came from Kildare? The chances of you finding the parish of your ancestors is quite high assuming there are records and assuming they came from Co. Kildare. If you write to the Kildare Heritage Center in Newbridge, they will do a lookup for you in their computerized database of church records. I ahve found my Swords (and related families this way. Here is the web site: Kildare Heritage and Genealogy Co., Newbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland They are good. Colleen

    2. Hi Ed, Do you know what County or better yet parish your families came from? If so, you might be able to find their baptismal records on micorfilm at the National Library of Ireland. Some of these microfilms are not availalbe through the FHC. You also might want to visit the National Archives to search for detailed info on Griffith's Valuation entries and to search for probate records. I ahve used both and they are very helpful. Colleen

Kildare My grandfather was Vincent O'Connor born in Blakestown, Co. Kildare Dec 14, 1891. Came to USA in 1912 and joined his brother Patrick O'Connor( born Blakestown 1882) and Aunt Margaret O'Connor Murray -affectionately known as "Aunt Baby"- (born Blakestown, Oct 20, 1867). Aunt Baby lived in Noroton Heights, CT- (near Darien and Stamford). Vincents father Hugh O'Connor(born Blakestown 1857) was brother to Margaret. Family stories are that there were about 6 siblings of Hugh and Margaret but I know of only Catherine and Mary and Richard. All were born in Blakestown. Parents of Hugh and Margaret were Patrick O'Connor and Margaret Monohan. I do have more info if you are interested. Maura Foster Virginia USA > > >>

Kathy at [email protected] writes: << A cousin in Ireland sent me a picture of the Dunfierth Cemetery near Kilmurry >> To change the subject slightly, this graveyard has a great Hamilton vault, built into it are "weepers" from the altar-tomb of Sir William Bermingham, 1st Baron Carbury, who died in 1548. There's also an effigy of Bill in whitish armor. It's a fine spot, and the weepers on the exterior of the vault, close to the wall, are some of the best I've seen (and I've seen and photographed a lot <gr>).
