Hi Dale- It is gorgeous, isn't it? I just got back from Kildare and Wexford last night. Must have missed you speeding by on the N78...Don't gain too much weight on the Full Irish Breakfasts, Carvery lunches, etc...The Fall colors should be peaking next week, too If you are interested in Athy, the man to see is Frank Taafe. He's a solicitor with an office just west of the Crom-A-Boo Bridge off Duke Street. Ballymore Eustace through locating probable parents Mary and John Byrne in Griffiths Valuation (1851). I know it's a long shot!! Catherine was born c 1820 was convicted in Dublin on 3 June 1839 for stealing bedclothes and sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia. She had been imprisoned a Dublin City goal at the time. Hi Julie, There is a Castledermot town and Parish just a few miles from Kildare town. It dates back to the year 600 and something, if I remember rightly. Cheers, Dale From Oz but over here in Ireland for 6 gorgeous months!!! Hi List, On a WO97 document I have a relative who enlisted "in the parish of Castle in or near the town of Kildare". This was <1793>. Does anybody think they could point me to this "parish of Castle"? Could it simply be Kildare Castle itself and its immediate vicinity - hence the name? I realise that the county is studded with "Castles" of some kind. The name was James Delaney b. <1775>. Regards, Julie

Hi Joyce, Very possibly. I have found that a Thomas Loakman married Ann Sloane around the same time that my Patrick Loakman married Ann Brady(about 1856), so I thought Thomas and Patrick might be brothers. I still have no concrete connection. They did both live in Naas. Cecile

Hi Folks, Well, I finally found my census index notes. Hopefully, I have now learned how to interpret them so that I order the correct census films. When I had ordered the index, there was no one at the FHC who could help me interpret them to then order the census. That was two years ago! I was so miffed, I refused to go back there. Now, you have all inspired me to get back to it. I am hoping that I can help most of you, but only if your D.E.D.s show up on the rolls that I order, based on the D.E.D.s that I have in my notes. I have no way of knowing beforehand, without ordering the index again, what D.E.D.s you all need. As I said, I hope I can most (if not all) of you. In regards to the 1901 census I would be interested in locating Simon Kelly, horse trainer, wife is Mary Cushing, sons Patrick, John and Thomas. Patrick b 1888, John c 1892, Thomas unknown. Allegedly from Co. Kildare, town of Monistrevan. County and township from Patrick's naturalization petition. Thanks a bunch. Patricia Snyder [email protected]
Thank you Mary, You're a treasure. Cheers Janine South Australia
Thanks Mary, do you have a URL please? A Google search comes up with a good many options - which is the correct one? Cheers Janine
Thanks Colleen, Catherine Byrne's transportation records state she is from Co. Kildare. I'll certainly write to the Kildare Heritage Center in Newbridge as you recommended. Cheers Janine
Mary, A good bookshop in Galway Town is Kennys on High St. It has a large number of books and has been in business for over 50 years. Here's a link to an article on Maureen Kenny who opened the shop with her husband. http://www.kennys.ie/AboutUs/PressArticles/TheIrishTimesApril1998/ And the general link to their website: http://www.kennys.ie/ You might also look in some of the local shops in the Glennamaddy area. Depending on local proprietors, some may have very localised history books, parish histories etc. In addition to the Discovery map(s), I recommend you also get a very detailed roadmap that shows as many of the rural roads and smaller towns as possible. There are some just for Galway and others for the entire country. There's been construction going on in Eyre Square in Galway Town and as of today I don't know what progress is being made but you may find some congestion resulting from that in addition to normal traffic. Here's a link to Glenamaddy's website http://www.glenamaddy.net/ Enjoy your trip! Eilis O'Hara --- [email protected] wrote: > Dear Pete, > Thanks so much for the information. Eilis O'Hara Thank you very much for the information. You have covered many possibilities. Thanks Ed Kenna
Dear Eilis, Thanks for the information. I will look at both sites and watch for the construction. I am quite excited to be coming and know I will meet some of the nicest people in the world over there as I did the last time. I will find Kenny's and look around and get the map. Thanks for the advice. Mary Nelson
