Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VWC.2ACI/980.13.1 Message Board Post: There is a Roger McGarry. He is mentioned several times-he replaced Thomas Reynolds as tresurer of the United Irishmen in March, 1798; "On the afternoon of the 24 May General Wilford, at Kildare, ordered his troops to Naas to reinforce General Dundas. Captain Winter at Monesterevan was in consequence aslo ordered to headquarters. On passing through Kildare he was persuaded, by Dominic William O'Reilly of Kildangan, not to burn the baggage of Wilford's troops which was lodged in the guardhouse. Following the retreat of government troop, 2000 rebels according to one estimate, headed by Roger McGarry entered the town. The abandoned baggage was now seized providing the rebels with better weaponry. The town was plundered, loyalists forced to flee, while those who remained ...were attacked....McGarry, who assumed control in Kildare town was probably a captain and had been a baronial committee member. James Malloy's evidence suggests he was a baronial treasurer in March...Monestere! van's ecavuation made an attack imminent. The town was now protected by 85 yeomen...The United Irish army attacked on the morning of May 25....The force apparently numbered around 1500 men in two groups, one led by Roger McGarry from Kildare. The action in the town was for some time 'very serious' but the patience of the infantry finally broke the rebels and the cavalry completed a rout. The defeated rebels fell back to Kildare." "On the morning of May 29 it appears a surrender was agreed...On the same morning General Sir James Duff arrived in Kildare with 500 troops. He planned to surround Kildare and 'make a dreadful example of the rebels'. He was probably unaware of the impending surrender. As Duff's troops approached Kildare the rebels retreated, assembling on Gibbet Rath (a fort) on the Curragh, apparently abandoned by Roger McGarry. ...Duff subsequently disarmed the group and ordered them to kneel and beg pardon. This being complied with, Duff ordered his troops to 'charge and spare no rebel' . This resulted in the death of 325 people. Whew!

    1. Re: BROWNSTOWN, County Kildare
    2. Teresa at [email protected] writes: << Could anyone please tell me where I could find the names of catholic church parishes around Brownstown? >> Teresa, I can try...... but you might have a small problem. There are 6 listings for Brownstown townlands. Fortunately, 4 of them are all in a clump - sort of a square, with common boundaries inside. These 4, Brownstown Great, Little, Upper and Lower, are located a mile or two south of the military Curragh Camp, and three to four miles SE of Kildare town. For those in the upper quadrants of this Brownstown block, the St. Brigid's RC church in Curragh Camp would be only a mile to the north. For those in the southern part of the Brownstowns, St. Brigid's (remember, we are "very close" to Kildare <gr>) in the village of Suncroft would be only a mile or a mile and a half south. Now, we have only two other Brownstowns to deal with. One of them is just a mile up the Naas road from the small town of Kilcullen. It appears that the nearest RC church would be in Kilcullen, "Sacred Heart and St. Brigid" (there's that name again). The least likely Brownstown (only about 7 buildings there currently) would be 2 to 3 miles NW of Athy town, near the southern bank of the Grand Canal. There is an RC church in Kilberry, about a mile and a half NNE of Brownstown, which is a "branch" of St. Michael's in Athy. But by the time someone from Brownstown wanted to get to Kilberry, they'd have to cross the Canal and the River Barrow, and the bridges are such that it might be a longer distance than going to Athy itself (just don't try to drive in the town - ugh <gr>). I would guess that St. Michael's would be the best contact for this particular Brownstown, although Athy also has RC "churches" at St. Dominic's Priory and St. Vincent's Hospital. That's all I've got. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

It is written that James came from County Kildare in 1832 and settled first in New Jersey and in 1832, he relocated to Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA. James was born April 12, 1805 in Ireland. James married DOROTHY GILMORE, a Scotch-Irish lady, but not sure if he married her in Ireland or America. Dorothy also had a brother, Peter Gilmore who also lived in Cherry Township, Sullivan Co. 2. Deborah Fox
    3. Hi! I am researching the LARGE surname in Counties Kildare, Laois, Kilkenny and Tiperrary. Am also searching for KAVANAGH and BOWE in the same counties. Thomas Large married Bridget Kavanagh about 1820, I believe in either Laois or Kildare. They settled in the Castlecomer area of Co. Kilkenny. Supposedly, the families were against the mixed religion marriage. When Bridget brought the children to the coal regions of eastern PA by 1850, her son Richard Large married Theresa Bowe, daughter of James. The Bowes originated in the same area in Ireland. Any information helpful. Thank you, Deborah Large Fox

    2. Jim McNamara
    3. Hi all, About 1850 two CLEARY brothers left the Curragh in Kildare Co to be horse grooms for the HIBBERTs in Co Galway-Clare (a border place parish Inishcaltra). Very soon afterward, the Clearys came to be farmers in the townland of Cloutha (Cloontyconnaught, today is called Clounty) which is near Scarriff on the shore of Lough Derg, [directly offshore from this townland is Holy Island]. I suspect these two brothers had names of Michael, William, or Thomas. When I pressed my cousins, one thought the townland in the Curragh was a townland of the same name, but, this may not be true. Any advice gratefully accepted.
