Okay, since everyone else is asking, any Keatings or Hylands? I've a John C. Keating who went missing in the middle of the night, estimating around the time of 1798. Both families immigrated from Ballymore Eustace around the mid 1800's. Cheers! John
No Mackey or Carroll, but there is a Patrick Dowling. After the arrest of Thomas Fitzgerald (Earl of Kildare), Dowling was part of a group that tried to put together a rescue plan, but was dissuaded by Fitzgerald himself. And, "Patrick Whelan of Athy fought under Patrick Dowling in 1798 and was later involved in robberies in both Dublin and Kildare." There are still a lot of Dowlings around Athy, both alive and dead... No Coady, but there are several Floods. Andrew Flood was part of a gang in north Kildare that was "...publicly harboured by all the farmers and some of the gentlemen farmers". James Flood was part of a group from Kildare holed up in Dublin in 1803 that were trying to enlist the aid of the French to start another rebellion; a Mr. Flood of Kilcullen attended the first county committee meeting of the United Irishmen in January 1798 at Nineteen Mile House near Kilcullen; "one Flood of Kilcullen was the 'only man that gave orders to the United sergeants'". My grandfather, Mark Kenna, was born in Athy during 1865. In the above book on page 102 a Matthew Kenna, is mentioned. Michael Dwyer, another family name, is also mentioned. Mark's father was one Edward Kenna, but I have no info on him, except his wife, Elizabeth Owens, who was born in 1841.Her mother was a Mary Whelan. Thanks for any and all suggestions Edward Kenna
There is only something about the barony of Connell-nothing about people with the surname. Interested? Good Morning List, I am so glad that you all are talking about the Churches in Co Kildare. I see someone is researching Kelly's. Thanks for the address for St. Michaels as I need information on Simon A. Kelly married Mary Cushing and had several sons. Simon was alleged to have been a "horse trainer". He was in the USA before the children as he is listed to be living in Bayonne, NJ in March of 1906 when he picked up his sons, James, Thomas, John, Joseph & Patrick when they arrived at Ellis Island on the ship the Umbria. Two of the sons were listed as Farrier's/Blacksmiths. Apparently Mary Cushing Kelly had died prior to the family migration. I have Patrick's petition for citizenship, his citizenship certificate, and several of his passports confirming his parentage. I also have Patrick's "CV"/employment history with Standard Oil Company. Thanks for the info. Patricia Snyder Grand daughter of P.J. Kelly

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VWC.2ACI/980.13.1 Message Board Post: There is a Roger McGarry. He is mentioned several times-he replaced Thomas Reynolds as tresurer of the United Irishmen in March, 1798; "On the afternoon of the 24 May General Wilford, at Kildare, ordered his troops to Naas to reinforce General Dundas. Captain Winter at Monesterevan was in consequence aslo ordered to headquarters. On passing through Kildare he was persuaded, by Dominic William O'Reilly of Kildangan, not to burn the baggage of Wilford's troops which was lodged in the guardhouse. Following the retreat of government troop, 2000 rebels according to one estimate, headed by Roger McGarry entered the town. The abandoned baggage was now seized providing the rebels with better weaponry. The town was plundered, loyalists forced to flee, while those who remained ...were attacked....McGarry, who assumed control in Kildare town was probably a captain and had been a baronial committee member. James Malloy's evidence suggests he was a baronial treasurer in March...Monestere! van's ecavuation made an attack imminent. The town was now protected by 85 yeomen...The United Irish army attacked on the morning of May 25....The force apparently numbered around 1500 men in two groups, one led by Roger McGarry from Kildare. The action in the town was for some time 'very serious' but the patience of the infantry finally broke the rebels and the cavalry completed a rout. The defeated rebels fell back to Kildare." "On the morning of May 29 it appears a surrender was agreed...On the same morning General Sir James Duff arrived in Kildare with 500 troops. He planned to surround Kildare and 'make a dreadful example of the rebels'. He was probably unaware of the impending surrender. As Duff's troops approached Kildare the rebels retreated, assembling on Gibbet Rath (a fort) on the Curragh, apparently abandoned by Roger McGarry. ...Duff subsequently disarmed the group and ordered them to kneel and beg pardon. This being complied with, Duff ordered his troops to 'charge and spare no rebel' . This resulted in the death of 325 people.
