Is anyone familiar with any customs or requirements followed regarding sponsors for RC baptisms around 1840-50's, i.e., was there an age requirement, were they usually a family member, did they list the woman's married or maiden name, were they usually a married couple? I ran across information listing sponsors for my ggrandfather and his 2 older brothers during that time in Newtown Parish, Kilcock, Co. Kildare and was hoping I could find something more about the MULLIGAN/FORD family through these sponsors. If anyone is familiar with any of the following, please contact me to see if there is any connection: 1. John Keenan and Margaret Mulligan were sponsors for Thomas R. Mulligan about 1846-48; 2. John Griffin and Betty Mulligan were sponsors for David Mulligan (twin #1); 3. John Mulligan and Madge Moran were sponsors for Patrick Mulligan (twin #2). All three boys were sons of William Mulligan and Allitia (Alice) Ford (Forde). In the same records there is information pertaining to Patrick Mulligan and Rose Keenan and their children, Anna (baptized 5/21/1846); Patrick (baptized 5/30/1847), Peter (baptized 4/15/1855); and Margaret (baptized 12/11/1857). Thank you for any information. Kathleen Smith

Hi everyone! I just recently found out that one of my ancestors may have come from County Kildare, and I was wondering if anyone had information about the family. My ancestors name was Valentine McLaughlin, however there are many variant spellings including McLoughlin. He was born about 1827. Sometime between then and 1849 he migrated from Ireland to Scotland, and then on to the United States in 1852. To the best of my knowledge he was presbyterian. His first chlid was named Thomas, so if he followed the naming tradition that would mean that his father's name was Thomas McLaughlin. I have no proof for this other than the common naming system. If anyone has any information about the McLaughlin / McLoughlin / etc. family from County Kildare please let me know! This is the first line in my family that comes from Ireland, so I'm very unsure of what I should do... any suggestions would be great! I'm spending the semester in London so I may even get a chance to visit! ~Michael Messinger~

My GG Grandfather Thomas Dunne was born in Timolin, not Castledermott, in 1791. Timolin is a few miles north of Castledermott and near Moone. His father was Murtagh Dunne and mother Helena/Elinor/Eleanor Keogh. Thomas had three siblings, John, Anne and John. Thomas was a widower when he married again in Australia. He emigrated around 1840. I would love to find information on his first wife, presumably Irish, and on what ship he sailed to Australia on. Any clues, please e-mail me.

I saw that in 1850 a Bridget married a Ponsonby McMahon and was wondering IF this is the Bridget I was looking for. Her parents were James Egan and Margaret Strachan. However it may not. I followed this Bridget's path to Tasmania. But I believe our Bridget died between 1848 and 1864. Bernie
Re-sending as it doesn't appear to be posting. ----- Original Message ----- From: D.I. To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, October 10, 2005 9:30 AM Subject: Dunne As I've been absent from the board for some time, I'll re-list my information: Thomas DUNNE Born 22/12/1791 Timolin to Murtagh DUNNE and Helena/Elinor/Eleanor KEOGH. Three siblings: John born 21/11/1790 Anne born 13/04/1794. John born 14/05/1797 Births registered Castledermott. Timolin is a few km north of Castledermott near Moone. Co. Kildare. Thomas is my GG Grandfather and was in Melbourne, Australia, in 1841. He emigrated quite late in life (around 50 years old) and was a widow when he married Priscilla/Hannah PRICE from Devon, England in Melbourne on 12/05/1845. He had enough money to purchase several acres of land in the Moonee Ponds area. Thomas was a farmer. He died 17/04/1855 Age 64. Collingwood and is buried in Melbourne General Cemetery. Plot 107 I have records of his movements here in Australia but can't find him on any passenger lists from Ireland to Oz. This is what I'd like to find most of all. Most of the Thomas Dunn/es listed are too young. Ring any bells with anyone? Any help really appreciated. I have checked with Kildare Heritage Centre on visits to Ireland and they've given me all the records they have. Dale. QLD AUST
