    1. McLAUGHLIN in County Kildare
    2. Hi everyone, I found out a little while ago that I had an ancestor named Valentine McLaughlin from Ireland. Very recently I found a relative who knew that family stories said that Valentine was from County Kildare. Valentine was born in about 1827 (supposedly in county Kildare) and according to family stories he was Catholic. He later moved to Scotland and (according to family stories) converted to Presbyterianism so that he could marry. Valentine and his wife emmigrated from Scotland to the United States in 1852. I was wondering if anyone was familiar with the McLaughlin family from County Kildare. The name as a wide variety of spellings, the most common variation in my experience has been McLoughlin. Also, I was wondering if anyone was familiar with County Kildare and could help direct me where I should go from here. Many of you were of great help when all I knew was that my ancestor was from Ireland, but now I have more specific location. I was wondering what resources are out there for County Kildare and what would be the best place to start. Thanks! ~Michael Messinger~

Your family seems to be in the south of Kildare and mine in the north, not that it is difinitive but they didn't usually wait two years to baptize the baby in Ireland as I'm told and my Bridget was born in 1843. Your James was oldest, then Julia Dunne baptized 13 Apr 1844; Bridget baptized 27 Apr 1845; Richard baptized 2 Jan 1848; and William baptized 18 Nov 1849. All are born to Peter Dunne and Catherine or Kitty Corcoran of Athy, Meeting Lane. These are from the parish indexes that the Athy parish secretary has. Originals are in Dublin, I think. There was no marriage record for Peter and Catherine. However, there is a marriage record of Peter Dunn (no "e") and Margaret Hyland 15 Feb 1825. 3. Hi Richard, I have Clearys that are said to be from the Curragh, and do have Thomas-William-Michael-John names among them. Supposedly, two brothers left there about 1850 to be horse grooms for the Hibberts in a townland very near to Lough Derg. Eventually, my Clearys are farming and raising cows and horses right there in Cloutha townland. Does any of this sound familiar. Tyrawley wrote to Cook in Dublin: The execution of this man has had a good effect. It was clearly proved that he was at one of the rebel camps encouraging people with a pistol in his hand and that he gave them absolution tho' they confessed to him that they were United Irishmen. I'm glad to be able to add that the other priests in this neighbourhood refused absolution to such people as were UI. I think the people are heartily sick of rebellion and that it will be very difficult to make them rise again." According to my research, my great-grandmother, who married Michael O'Shea of Waterville Co. Kerry April 15, 1861 in St John Church Tralee Co. Kerry as Bridget Dunne of Kildare Co. Kildare. I know that shortly after 4/1861 they moved to America and settled in Norwich, CT where Michael's mother and sister were working as weavers because on 9/17/1862 he joined the 26th CT Vol Inf and went off to the Civil War to serve. By 4/1868 they were in Troy, N.Y. where a daughter Hanna (Anna) was born and they had one other daughter with them at that time, Mary born in 1863 in Norwich. The 1900 Census showed they had 7 children 3 living which we know were Anna, Michael T. and John Joseph, my grandfather, Mary died before the 1880 census but was in the 1875 N.Y. Census. We have been unable to identify the other 3 children although we have a note refering to a Bridget born in 1862 in Norwich. On all offical documents and census records they were listed as Michael and Bridget Shea, except Michael's military records which list him as MIchael Shay. Bridget could speak, read and write english but Michael could only speak english with a heavy accent. Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    1. James Judge family
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Judge, Lawler, Daly, Flannigan Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VWC.2ACI/1093 Message Board Post: On 10 February 1867 my grgrgrandfather, James Judge of Robertstown, Co. Kildare married Anne Lawler of Huerthatch (not sure of that name, it is difficult to read) at St. Patrick's Chapel, Celbridge, Co., Kildare. James, born in 1837, was the son of John Judge and Elizabeth Flannigan. Anne, born in 1844, was the daughter of Tom Lawler and Ellen Daly. Tom Lawler's occupation is given as "boatman." I assume he worked on barges on the Grand Canal. The Judge family may also have been involved with barges on the canal because James Judge was the captain of a canalboat in 1875 in Brooklyn, New York. He later operated a number of barges in New York Harbour. James and Anne Judge sailed for New York soon after they were married in 1867, and settled in the Brooklyn, New York, and Northern New Jersey areas. Their children were Ellen (1868), Elizabeth (1872), Annie (1874), James (1877), Thomas (1880), and Kathryn (1883). Anne Judge died in NY in 1904 and James Judge died in NY in 1913. Any additional information on these families would be greatly appreciated. John Daly
