Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VWC.2ACI/980.18.1 Message Board Post: There is not a mention of Thomas Cleary, but there are two mentions of Father Prendergast: "In early June 1798 almost the whole of Kildare town was destroyed following and attempt to destroy 'his majesties's troops, the inhabitants almost to a man having left the place'. In Monesterevan in the aftermath of the breakdown of rebellion in the baronies of West and East Offaly, Lord Tyrawley busied himself examining (judging) rebels. On 11 June he arrested Fr Edward Predergast who was tried by Court Martial and subsequently executed. Tyrawley wrote to Cooke in Dublin: "The execution of this man has had a good effect. It was clearly proved that he was at one of the rebel camps encouraging the people with a pistol in his hand and that he gave them absolution tho' they confessed to him that they were United Irishmen..." The death of Prendergast is the best documented case of clerical involvement diring the Kildare rebellion. " ...no 'white terror' gripped Kildare in late July-August. This is largely explained by the fact that such a reaction already occurred during June in the areas of the county where open rebellion quickly dissipated. This is illustrated in the execution of Fr Edward Prendergast at Monesterevan or Col. Campbell's destructive pacification of south Kildare." The sources these came from are: Irish Ecclesiastical Record, 5th series, vol. lxvi (1945), Duff, Monesterevan, to Hewitt, June 8, 1798 (Rebel Papers 620/38/88), and Tyrawley to Cooke, June 13,1798 (Rebel Papers 620/56/192), Musgrave, Rebellions, pp 249-250 all available from the National Archives of Ireland. Thanks much for getting and retaining those Grace marriage records!! We were at St. Michael's RC Church in Athy a few years ago and got the Grace baptisms, but forgot (it was our first foray in looking for ancestors) to ask for marriages. Thanks to you we now know their marriage dates!! Our direct-line Graces were Michael Grace/Catherine Powell (Michael was born in Goulyduff (Churchtown Parish), and their son Peter who married Mary Casey. Peter/Mary lived in Nicholastown (Tankardstown, Kildare) before Peter and three oldest boys entered the US (via the SS CIty of Baltimore)at Castle Garden in March 1860. [We haven't found when Mary and the others came over, but we know it was before 1870--they all settled in New Brtiain CT.] In Griffin's 1852 valuation in Tankardstown, I don't see your Kirwan's listed. I was researching some Grace family members from Athy that I though might have come over with my family members, because one of them (Patrick) was a witness at the baptism of my gg-Uncle Michael on 12/1/1839 and there is another one in a suspect immigration record to New York.** Here are the St. Michael's Parish records on the Grace family: Marriages: 1/12/1701 Ann Grace to James McNamara, no locations 4/1/1845 Anne Grace to William Carty, no locations 2/11/1850 Edmund Grace of Duke Street (Athy) the Anne McCann of Duke Street 1/1/1788 Frances Grace of Tankardstown to John Grace of Tankardstown (cousins?) 11/24/1795 Margaret Grace to Thomas Kearan, no locations* 3/5/1832 Margaret Grace to John Manders, no locations 1/24/1823 Mary Grace to Edmond Brookes, no locations 2/22/1756 Mary Grace of Athy to Patrick Hall of Athy 2/21/1792 Mary Grace to Bryan Kilbride, no locations 10/29/1789 Mary Grace to Michael Neal, no locations 2/22/1805 Michael Grace to Catherine Powel, no locations 9/22/1884 Nicholas Grace of Sheean to Sarah Kehoe of Ballyroe 7/23/1839 Peter Grace to Mary Casey, no locations 1/1/1882 Thomas Grace of Chathan, England to Anne Doyle of Athy * indicated one that might be a misspelling of Keerwan or Kierwan since there was a Thomas who was a landlord later in Griffith's Valuation ** Grace family members below came on the Cynosure with a Michael Kerwin, age 19 from Liverpool to New York, arriving 9/7/1857: Thomas Grace age 22 Labourer Lawrence Grace age 29 Labourer Mary Grace age 40 wife Catharine Grace age 9 Bridger Grace age 7 My Michael would have been 17 at the time, so this might be a connection. As for Ryan, there are several mentions of a Thomas Ryan in the book. He was a squire and an officer of the Kilcock jail, and was involved in transferring prisoners Lawrence O'Connor and Michael Griffin from Kilcock to Naas. They were ambushed by United Irishmen in July, 1795. He voted against proclaiming martial law in Kildare on May 8, 1797, on the side of the Duke of Leinster and is mentioned as having voted against the Crown in the summer 1797 assizes (criminal court hearings) in Athy. Please keep me posted on your Grace research. I am working a theory that they might have been friends or neighbors of my family in Athy in the 1825-1860's period. All of the sons in my great-grandfather's generation (born in the period 1826-1835) immigrated eventually to St. Louis; and were all blacksmiths except for one. Cheers, Kevin Kerwin

Wendy, famous Anglo/Irish cousins, Somerville and Ross, (Edith and Violet) were prominent writers in the late 1800's/early1900's. "The Irish RM" (resident magistrate) being made into a TV series by the ABC. Edith was a painter too. They lived in Castletownshend. Co.Cork. Drishane House is still there and open to the public. Not a great lead, I know, but there MAY be a link to your Elizabeth if you delve into Edith's background which, btw, makes fascinating reading. Dale, Thanks for the info., I have read some of Edith's works....however, this is NOT our Branch. They came to Ireland a little later. William Somerville was a minister, our James was a gentleman, and there was apparently a soldier - so legend has it about the 3 Somervilles! I do have our direct descent, but am trying to fill in the side lines. Here's the link: http://kildare.ie/library/KildareHeritage/ Otherwise, you'd need to identify more specifically which of the 15 Newtowns in Kildare is the location where Patrick was born to identify what church records are available for that location. Many have been microfilmed and are available at the National Library of Ireland in Dublin. There are no census records for the 1800s and civil registration didn't start in Ireland until 1864 (Protestant marriages in 1845) so church registers for the specific location of birth are the primary source for family information. Other than the Kildare Heritage Company, there is no other centralised source to lookup information in church registers. Regards. Eilís O'Hara
